35. Read the extract and answer the question that follows:
There has been a gradual shift from cultivation of food crops to cultivation of fruits, vegetables, oil seeds and
industrial crops. This has led to the reduction in net sown area under cereals and pulses. With the growing
population of India, the declining food production puts a big question mark over the country’s future food
security. Today Indian agriculture finds itself at crossroads. To make agriculture profitable proper thrust should be
given to the improvement of the conditions of marginal and small farmers. The green revolution promised much
but today it’s under controversies. It has been alleged that it has caused land degradation due to overuse of
chemicals. Growing industrial crops is often likely to improve food security, owing to higher incomes, and
complementarities between industrial and food crops.
The competition for land between non-agricultural uses such as housing and agriculture has resulted in reduction
in the net sown area. The productivity of land has started showing a declining trend. Fertilizers, pesticides and
insecticides, which once showed dramatic results are now being held responsible for degrading the soils. Periodic
scarcity of water has led to reduction in area under irrigation. Inefficient water management has led to water
logging and salinity.
Answer the following questions:
35.1. Marginal and small farmers have been pushed out of cultivation. Which one of the following is the
prominent cause? (1)
35.2. According to the information given above, there has been reduction in the net sown area under cereals and

Answer the following questions:
The basic objective of ‘Self Help Groups’ is to organize rural poor, particularly women belonging to one
neighbourhood into small Self-Help Groups (15-20 members). These members save regularly and the amount
varies from ₹25-100 or more depending upon their ability to save. he four advantages of ‘Self Help Groups’ are as
follows: The members can take small loans from the group itself to meet their needs. The group charges interest
on these loans which is still less than what moneylenders charge. After a year or two, if the group is regular in
savings, it becomes eligible for availing loan from the bank which is sanctioned in the name of the group to create
self-employment opportunities. All important decisions regarding loan, purpose, amount of interest, non-
payment of loan are taken by the group members.
For instance, small loans are provided to the members for releasing mortgaged land, meeting working capital
needs, for acquiring assets like sewing machines, handlooms, cattle etc. Since non-repayment of loans is dealt
with seriously by group members, therefore banks are willing to lend to the poor women when organized in
SHGs, even though they have no collateral as such. Thus, the SHGs help women to become financially self-reliant.

36.1. What is the basic objective of ‘Self Help Groups’? (1)

36.2. How do they work? (1)
