THE FEW... THE PROUD...

THE DURABLE PLASTIC

The wind blew cold around the newest

member of the squad.
He hadn’t heard Sarge come up behind him and nearly jumped out of his
green plastic boots when Sarge tapped him on the shoulder. “Jump away
from the fire if you’re gonna jump, kid,” growled Sarge. A long silence fell
between the recruit and the grizzled sergeant. Sounds from the enemy camps
in the distance swirled in on the clammy breeze.
“I...I don’t like to say it, Sarge,” said the recruit in a shaky voice. “But
I’m afraid.”
“Son,” Sarge said, “anybody who tells you they’re not afraid before a
battle is either a fool or a liar. You’re lucky, kid. You don’t know the real
meaning of fear.”
The kid thought a long minute, and then said, “It means you’re scared,
don’t it?”
“You might want to take me a little less literally, private,” said Sarge.
“I always wondered, Sarge,” said the recruit. “What makes the other armies so evil? Especially the Tans?”
“It isn’t that they’re evil, kid,” Sarge said, “just because they want to conquer everybody else and steal everything
they have. I think they just don’t know any better. It’s a tragic flaw in their character that’s beyond their control. That’s why
they’re better off being dead.
“But it isn’t just Tans we’re up against, kid,” Sarge continued, “although they’re the strongest and most aggressive. It’s

6
AM_Manual 31/1/00 5:18 pm Page 7

the Grays and the Blues, too. The Grays are a bunch of hit-and-run guerrillas; when I was little, my dad used to scare me at
night by telling me stories about the Grays. You don’t have to like the Grays, but you gotta respect them.
“The Blues, on the other hand, are stinkin’ cowards. They make better sneaks than they do soldiers. They’re more likely
to ambush you than shoot you in open combat. The Tans put up with the Blues because they can use them as couriers, sabo-
teurs, and spies.”
“There’re so many of them, Sarge,” the kid said. “Their three armies against our one. We don’t stand a chance Sarge!
We’re as good as dead! Dead, I tell you!”
“They aren’t supermen, kid,” growled Sarge. “They aren’t even unbreakable. They melt just like everybody else.
Remember, they don’t cooperate with each other, at least not for long. It isn’t us against them; it’s us against them against
them against them.”
But Sarge wasn’t telling the kid the whole truth, and it made him sick to his stomach to lie. The kid sensed Sarge was
keeping something back, something besides the rations that were bouncing around in his gut like a squad of paratroopers
landing on trampolines. Sarge couldn’t hold it back any longer.
“There’s more to it than I told you, kid,” he continued. “We’re on this mission to look for something, something
powerful. No one knows exactly what it is. It’s some powerful mumbo jumbo, that’s all I really know; and we can’t let the
Tans get to it first. There’s no telling what they’d do.”
The kid fell into deep contemplation once again. “I think,” he said, “they’d probably do something bad with it.”
“You’re catching on, kid,” said Sarge. “We’ll make a plastic soldier out of you yet.”

Otherwise, you can play any mission not darkened. The mission highlighted in white is the current mission.) Left-click on
the mission you wish to play.
4. Wait for the Mission to load. When it does, the Mission Briefing appears. As soon as you’ve read the briefing, press
ENTER to begin the Mission.

Starting a Multi-Player Game

Notes On Multi-Player Connections
There are four kinds of connections for Army Men multi-player games: IPX, TCP/IP, Modem, and Serial. A TCP/IP or IPX game
can have up to four players, while Modem and Serial games can have only two. Note: When playing a TCP/IP game, if you
disconnect your computer from your ISP or network and then reconnect, your IP address may change.* Read the following text
for more information.
To set up an IPX game, you must be connected to an IPX or IPX-compatible network through Windows 95, and have at
least one other player join your game. The host needs to have an Army Men CD in his CD-ROM drive; guests don’t, but they
must have Army Men installed on their hard drive. If you are a guest, when the game asks for a CD, left-click on Ignore.
To set up a TCP/IP game, players’ connections to the Internet must be open. If you are hosting a game, you must know
your IP address so you can provide it to those who will join your game. Note: you must connect to your ISP (Internet Service
Provider) first when running a TCP/IP game; an IP address will be assigned to you by your ISP.
Once connected, to find out your IP address:
1. In the Windows Start menu, left-click on Run.

11
AM_Manual 31/1/00 5:18 pm Page 12

2. Type winipcfg or c:\windows\winipcfg in the text box.

3. Left-click on OK.

To set up a modem game, both players must have Windows 95 compatible modems. The host should make sure his
opponent knows the phone number of the host’s modem. When the guest player selects modem connection, the dialing inter-
face pops up. Enter the phone number of the host’s modem.
To set up a serial game, a serial line must be open and recognized by Windows 95. Each player should know what com-
munications port they are connecting through.

Multi-Player Game Rules

Multi-Player Games are governed by one of two sets of rules: Capture the Flag (bring each enemy flag back to your base.
Flag will then teleport back to that enemy’s base; a tally will be kept of which flags you’ve captured. Collect them all before
your opponents do.); or Blitz (the first player with the number of kills defined in the Map Rules screen wins). When creating
or joining a multi-player game, make sure you know what rules you’re playing by.
When your Sarge dies in a multi-player game, he is immediately replaced: in a Capture the Flag game, he is
replaced near your flag, and in a Blitz game, he reappears in a random location. You can also play a multi-player game
against 3 computer controlled armies; follow the same setup instructions below.

Playing a Multi-Player Game on Internet Gaming Services

Army Men may be supported by various Internet Gaming Services. Check your software as well as the 3DO website at
http://www.armymen.com for locations that may be offered.

Deployment In A Multi-Player Game
Once the host starts a multi-player game, your screen will remain black until the
map loads onto all the other players’ machines. When the game map appears on
SargE TANK your screen it is time for you to deploy your troops and vehicles for battle. You
have various vehicles and, sometimes, additional squads to deploy when you first
enter a multi-player game. What you have available to deploy is shown in the
boxes on your dashboard to the right of the chat window.

To deploy a vehicle or squad, left-click on it to pick it up. Move it with your
mouse to the area of the game screen where you want to deploy it. If the vehicle

or squad is outlined in green, it is over an area where it can be deployed. If it is
outlined in red, it is over an area where it can’t be deployed (such as impassable
terrain, enemy territory, or over another vehicle) so you must deploy it somewhere
else. To deploy a vehicle, weapon, or squad in a chosen position, left-click again. Note: By double clicking a location on the
strategic map in the bottom right corner of your dash you can quickly jump to a specific location.
When the multi-player game map first appears, note the Sarge icons at the top of the screen. There is one for each
player in their associated army man color. “Pause” appears on the icon and as each player selects “start,” to indicate they
have deployed their troops and are ready to play, “pause” disappears. The battle begins when the last Sarge selects Start. If
you don’t deploy all your vehicles, squads, and equipment before you left-click on Start, you’ll lose those undeployed.

Customizing Keyboard and Keypad Controls

1. To customize keyboard or keypad controls, left-click on Options on the Game Start Menu. When the Game Options Menu
appears, left-click on Controls. And when the Custom Configuration Menu comes up, left-click on Typical Configuration to
the usual set of Key Controls, left-click on Alternate Configuration to see an alternate set of controls and custom configu-
ration if you want to completely customize your controls.
2. Left-click on the command you want to customize to highlight it in yellow. Then press the key you want to control that
command. For instance, if you want the W to be the Forward command key, highlight Forward and press W. You can’t
assign additional command functions to keys that are already used for commands, and you can’t change commands that
are given through the F keys or ESC.
3. If you want to implement the control changes you’ve made, left-click on Apply; if you want to return to the Custom
Configuration Menu without making any changes, left-click on Back. You can also reset the custom keys to one of the
predefined Typical or Alternate sets by clicking on that button.

Customizing Joystick Controls

1. To customize the default joystick controls, left-click on Options on the Game Start Menu. When the Game Options Menu
appears, left-click on Controls. And when the Custom Configuration Menu comes up, left-click on Joystick Configuration.
2. When the Joystick Configuration Menu appears, left-click on a command you want to customize to highlight it in yellow.

that command.
3. If you want to implement the control changes you’ve made, left-click on Apply; if you want to return to the Custom
Configuration Menu without making any changes, left-click on Back.
NOTE ON JOYSTICKS
Make sure your joystick or joypad is properly installed and calibrated before you attempt to play Army Men with it. From the
Windows 95 Start Menu, go to Settings, and left-click on Control Panel. Left-click on Game Controllers on the Control Panel
screen, and calibrate your joystick or joypad from the Game Controllers window. If your joystick or joypad does not appear in
the Game Controllers window, left-click on Add. When the Add Game Controller window appears, left-click on your joystick or
joypad from the list. If your joystick or joypad does not appear in the list, click on Add Other. When the Add Other window
appears, click on the make and model of your joystick or joypad. You may need the disk that came with your joystick or joy-
pad to complete this process.
We also recommend that you do not use an analog joystick. While it will function with Army Men, it might not be as
responsive as you’d like.

Customizing Audio Options

1. To change the default audio options, left-click on Options on the Game Start Menu, and then left-click on Audio on the
Game Options Menu.
2. There are three Audio options: SFX (sound effects) Volume, Music Volume, and Voice Volume. To turn an Audio Option
on or off, left-click on its On/Off buttons; an On/Off button turns red when it is on.
3. There is a volume bar beneath each Audio Option. To increase the volume of a Sound Option, click on the arrow button to
the right of its volume bar; to decrease a Sound Option’s volume, click on the arrow button at the left of the volume bar.

Pausing A Game or Ending A Mission

You can pause a One Player game by pressing ESC. This calls up the Options Menu. To return to the paused Mission, left-click
on Return. To end a paused Mission and return to the Game Start Menu, left-click on Abort Mission.

To get into a vehicle, walk over it and press F4 or E. To exit a vehicle, press F4 or E again.
The movement controls of all vehicles are basically the same, although some vehicles turn without moving forward, such
as the tank, while others must move forward to turn, like the jeep. To move a vehicle forward at full speed, press NUM 8; to
move one forward at half speed, press NUM 8 + SHIFT. To back up, press NUM 2.

Vehicle Health
When Sarge is in a vehicle, the vehicle’s condition is shown in the Vehicle Health bar meter. When the meter is full, the vehicle
is intact. As it sustains more and more damage, the meter empties from green to yellow to red. When the meter is empty, the
vehicle explodes and Sarge is ejected. Any squad members in a vehicle when it explodes, die; Sarge, on the other hand, will
take damage determined by the explosive force of the weapon that hit the vehicle and how much “health” the vehicle had left
before it blew up. So Sarge may walk away from a vehicle explosion relatively unscathed, or he may also be blown to bits.

TROUBLESHOOTING
There are numerous occasions in life when things may not go well. You may even be experience trouble with Army Men. If so,
there are several avenues of exploration open to you whereby you can determine the exact cause. The following are some of
the more common difficulties people may experience.

1) I started the game, and the screen is black or the graphics are distorted.
This is probably due to incompatibility between your video card driver and DirectX. The best possible solution is for you to con-
tact the manufacturer of your video card and see if they have a newer set of DirectX compatible drivers for your specific model.
Usually, these companies maintain a website on the Internet with downloadable versions of their latest drivers.

2) The game starts, but I hear no sound or music.

Again, this may be due to an incompatibility between your sound card and DirectX. Contact your soundcard manufacturer for a
set of the latest drivers.

3) My hard drive is compressed and I’d like to run Army men on it.
While it is possible to install Army Men to a compressed hard drive, we don’t recommend it because of performance issues.

4) I want to play Army Men without the CD in my CD-ROM drive.

You MUST have the Army Men CD in your CD-ROM drive in order to start a single player game of Army Men. After that, it’s
optional. However, if you remove the CD from the drive after the game is loaded, you will not be able to hear the redbook
audio music or see the cut scenes between missions. WARNING: If you eject the CD during gameplay and then reinsert it,
Army Men may crash due to a call from the Windows 95 Autoplay driver.

4a) I have some friends who don’t own army men, but we want to play a multi-player game.
Only the host must have the CD in his CD-ROM drive. All other players just need Army Men installed on their systems.

5) I use RAM doubler software and want to play Army Men.

If you don’t mind taking a performance hit, Army Men will probably run with RAM doubling software in place. However, we
recommend disabling the software for optimal performance.
