Unit 6
A change
Why did you make it? Did anyone help you? Was it successful? Why?
As I remember, when I was in elementary years, I made a mistake that I still can’t
forget for the rest of my life. But I can tell you what it was because I feel very
ashamed when I mention it. To be honest, at that time, I didn’t know why I could
dare to do that, maybe I was too young to see the consequences or I was jealous of
friends around me. And when I was about to enter grade 6, I thought to myself, if I
keep doing it, I won’t have any friends so I decided to change and try to break out
of that bad habit. And yeah I succeeded through doing good things instead of doing
the things I used to do in past. After that, I realized that I helped myself change.
Now, I have a lot of friends and they treat me very well.
Have you ever taken part in a study? When? Where?
Yes, I have. I used to participate in chemistry and physics experiments when I was
in middle school and high school. You know, watched how a chemical reaction
happens or do little physics experiments, Sometimes it took place in lab but
sometimes it was made directly in classroom.
Have you ever conducted any test or experiment? What were they and
what did the results show?
Yes, I have a conducted a experiment about the process of making crystals in
chemistry and my teacher instructed to everyone in my class how to grow a crystal.
It make from a lot of ingredients and you will be take time to do it. You have to
really be careful during crystal growing because it maybe dead. As the result, I
failed as it was hard to raise.
Forget
What sort of things do people forget?
I think trivial things are very easy to forget like some people can’t remember
where they put their keys or their glasses and stuffs. Sometimes, they forget the
birthdays or even important meetings.
What can people do if they forget something important like meeting a
relative for lunch?
Well I think first of all, they have to apologize to the other for missing the meeting
by texting or calling them and make another appointment to show them your
sincerity.
Sleep
In what places can people fall asleep?
I think people can fall asleep when they study in classes or workplaces. They also
feel sleepy when they are watching TV or reading book in their own home.
Sometimes, there are some people sleeping in odd sleeping positions like on the
train or train station, airport…
What things can make people fall asleep?
I think the lack of sleep makes people unable to concentrate on anything like some
people waste their bedtime for playing game, surfing the Internet, etc,… or they
maintain a unhealthy daily life and even they have a big effection on their works
lead to they feel exhausted and cause fall asleep.
Why do some people not get enough sleep?
Maybe, they use too much caffein which are in coffee and tea per they making the
people don’t get enough sleep. The atmosphere or the environment are one of the
big problems like noise pollution in big cities. One more thing is people use laptop
or smartphone before they go to bed, it make them hard to fall asleep because of
the blue light from electronic devices.
Memory
What sort of things do people need to remember everyday?
Well, there are variety of things that people need to remember everyday such as
which ingredients or things they intend to buy, tasks or plans to be completed
during a day so they have to make a list to prevent them from missing anything.
Why do people sometimes forget important things?
I think the average person has a lot of things to do per day so they are dominated
by the things around them and distracts them. That’s why they forget the important
things.
What activities can help improve people’s memory?
I suppose the easiest way would be to practice memorizing things more often, get
into the habit of making notes or reminders for things that you don’t want to forget,
change your diet, try a fish oil supplement everyday, make time for meditation and
especially the people have to get enough sleep because sleep plays an important
role in memory consolidation.
Unit 7
Decribe a book
So, I’m going to talk about a book related to my subject Political Economy that
I’m most impressed with. I’ll say the name for Confessions of an economic hit man
authored by John Perkins - an American economic killer. It’s all about how he
experienced a series of events that influence on the world, how greed for money
and power create lies, betrayals and savage killers. It tells a story of how a country
can ‘exploits, take advantages of others, rob the nature resources, cause
environmental disasters, etc… To be honest, I’m not into books, I’m not a
bookworm but my teacher recommended it to us in order to make essay easily, so I
spent about nearly a month to complete it. After reading it, to me, I’m really
enjoyed reading this book because of its plot and enventually, I can clearly
comprehend and see about the truth behind his own country’s administration and
be aware about corruption in polictical system.
Reading book
How important is it for children to read book?
In my view, I think it’s essential for a child reading book because it can improve
their cognitive skills and help along the process of cognitive development. It also
provides them with background knowledge on their young world. Moreover, it’s a
part of education so the children have to get used to read book when they were
young.
When do children usually read book?
I think the children tend to read book with their parents because maybe they feel
interested in or before they go to sleep, it can make them relaxing to fall asleep
easily after doing a lot of thing in a day.
Why do some adults dislike reading books?
In my opinion, I think they find it boring, less interesting or some people prefer
outdoor activities to activities that involve being quiet and still, I think so.
What sort of problems do adults have if they can’t read or write?
I think when the adults face an illiterate, this makes finding things on foot difficult,
they will have low-paid jobs than others because they don’t have opportunity to
work in company or an organiztion.
How can people be encouraged to read more?
Well, I think some organization should make a reading competition for people and
accidentally, this competition become a condition which to encourage them to read
more.
Unit 8
Do you think the number of tourists going to the polar regions has
risen or fallen recently?
I think the visitors who go to the polar regions have risen recently.
Do you think the number of tourists going to the polar regions will rise
or fall in the future?
I think the number of tourists going to the polar regions will fall in the future
because it will be affected by climate change, especially is global warming which
is result in melting of polar ice caps and rising sea levels.
Affecting environment
Are there other places in the world where tourist numbers are affecting
the environment?
I think the Mount Everest is one of the places which affected by the tourist
numbers come here per year because of the poor in awareness of visitors about the
pollution, they leave and left behind a huge amount of garbage so the locals who
are forced to collect the astonishing level of waste.
Should government in some parts of world limit tourist numbers? Why?
In my view, I think it’s essential. The reduce of tourist numbers are helping limit
environmental pollution here. Or if the government don’t want to limit the number
of tourist because tourism is a main source that brings money for that area , the
administration should introduce laws to protect natural environment and local
cultures.
Museum in your town
Do you have any museums in your home town? What can
you see and do there?
My home town has a museum which nears by the square. In here, you can see the
statue, historical objects and our traditional and cultural, you can also take photos
without permission and ticket free.
What types of museum do you most enjoy visiting? Why?
I would like to visit the museum so that I can learn about the past and histories like
the war museums with collections of VN war of my country
A village that you come from
My hometown is called NT province. It’s located in South Central Coast. I’m
living in the city where has a tons of leisure activities in the heart of city. It’s
becoming more and more vibrant as time goed by. It also has a lot of stunning
beaches, scenery and places of interest, ect,… Apart from that, almost the locals
are extremely friendly and hospitable to everyone. The people here have small
business like do agriculture and fishing.
Describe town – importance of tourism – recommeded places - festivals
Can you describe your town or village?
I live in a town which is PR-TC city. In fact, it’s a small city with nearly 6 hundred
thousand populations. Recently, it has become more and more develop than in the
past.
How important is tourism in your town/village? Why?
I think tourism plays an important role in my town because my town is
constructing and developing to become a famous tourist destination and the tourist
numbers come to visit that make the people know my town more.
What places would you recommend people to visit in your town/village?
Well, I would recommend visitors to visit Polong Garai Cham Temples Tower –
the most majestic and charming Cham towers left in VN. It’s a complex of 3
towers and it has the highest level of architecture art and sculpture. Beside that,
there are a lot of worthing spots to visit like beaches, PR Kite Center, Vinh Hy
Bay, Dinh Cape, etc,…
What festival take place in your local area?
There are 3 festivals which take place in my town per year included Grape&Wine
festival, it promote the image of the homeland and the locals to with international
tourists. The second is Cầu Đảo ceremony of the Cham people, it takes place on
occasions that drought threaten and the people go to the Polong Garai tower to
pray for rain, for good crops, peace and happiness. And the last one is Kate festival
– it’s for commemorate the Cahm people’s heroes.
Decribe a Holiday you enjoyed
When I was a child, I and my father had a trip to Malaysia because his company
organized a free trip for its staff and each member can take someone with them but
have to pay a fee. The flight took some hours and on the whole it went smoothly.
There had a tour guide who would accompany us throughout the trip. We visited
hot spots here, especially I really impressed with the architecture of Twin Tower –
it’s really beautiful. And after that trip, I really enjoyed the trip so much as maybe
it’s the second journey that I have spent time to go with my dad and had wonderful
experience during the trip.
Describe idea of perfect holiday
For me, the best place to have a perfect vacation would be a trip that locate on an
island that far from civilization. And Phu Quoc which is one of the most popular
and famous tourist attractions in VN recently, would be my choice. I would like to
have a great time with my family here for relaxing. I would enjoys and take part in
the outdoor activities and get a chance to try special food, take photos to get
memories. We will stay in hotel or resort during the holiday because of the comfort
and convenience of the service there. I think that would be a perfect holiday
because I can spend time with my family, it helps each member forget about the
worries of daily life, refresh our mind and body.
Unit 9
Desalination
Why do you think desalination is important?
Because the seawater can provide an endless supply of potable water by
desalination for drinking and other uses such as irrigation.
What disadvantages of desalination were mentioned in the recording? Can
you think of any others?
Besides the very salty subtance’s called brine which damages marine life will go
back into the sea, it also offer people a lot of disadvantages such as the chemicals
which poison plant and animal life, will be dumped into the sea if lost ability to
clean the water. It also harmful to human health if people drink pure water which
have by-products of chemicals used in desalination get through.
Given a talk to a group
Have you ever given a talk to a group of people? What was it about?
Yes, I have. I gave a talk to my class about the environmental pollution and the
solution topic when I was in high school
How did you prepare for it?
To have more relevant information, all of members in my group looked for it on
the Internet and given add ones in reality. When we have enough information for
the presentation, the team leader divided the task for each person.
How did you feel about it before and afterwards?
During preparation time for the presentation, I felt very tired and tired eyes
because I had to look at the screen for hours and it took time to look up for
information to fit in the topic. I also was the one who will represent my group give
a talk to classmates so I felt nervous but luckily, everything was fine and we got a
high mark.
Fresh water
Which parts of the world have problems getting fresh water?
I think those are countries located in Africa and the main causes of water
scarcity in Africa are physical and economic scarcity, rapid population growth,
and climate change like last-long drought
What problems are there if you don’t have running water in your house?
If I don’t have running water in my house, I have to take a lot of time and effort
needed to go and fetch water from well, river.
What problems are there if you don’t have access to clean water?
I think people have to use the polluted water and lack of proper hygence can cause
disease and harmful to people health.
Aylito’s village
- I think education because education is very important for everyone that can
take people out of poverty.
- I think people should move to cities to protect their help and keep away from
dirty water. Especially have well-educated instead of dropping out of school
to help family fetch water.
- I think the solidarity and the patience of residents.
Describe an activity near water
I’m going to talk about an activity that I really enjoy. I spend time on the beach
and try some sports like play volleyball or surfing. I will have to take a break from
studying. So I plan a perfect day that I’m free, and see the weather forcast to avoid
the rainny days, ask a friend to go with, prepare clothes, and sunscreen to protect
my skin from UV rays. It takes place on the beach and there are some water sports
like windsurfing, sailing,… I join some sports because I want to try new
experience instead of lying on the beach, it’s boring. I really enjoy this activity
because it give me tons of natural vitamin D from the sunshine and make me feel
relief when I spend time with my friends.
Water sport- surfing/swimming - not enjoy WP
- I think there are many water sports that are popular like swimming, surfing,
water motor, sailing, banana float, etc…
- With surfing you have to contact with water through a board, need a lot of
waves to surf, with swimming you’re in contact with water and prefer calm
water.
Attitude to water bt children&adults
- I think the children will prefer activities that take place on the shore like
water gun, water balloon fight, water treasure hunt,…
- The adults go to the beach for relaxing but the children go there for playing,
children can lose control and put themselves in danger but the adults don’t.
- Because they like to challenge themselves, feel sastisfied when they come
face to face with their fears or they can earn money from participating in an
competition or an extreme sports
Unit 10
Large, impressive building & who pay for it
Why do many cities have large, impressive building?
I think these building will bring benefits from tourism and attracts tourists who
want to see these building and they willing to afford it.
Who should organise and pay for the construction of city buildings?
I think the government will organise and spend money for the construction of
city buildings because I reckon all budgets are collected by the administration.
House in the picture
What features of the house does the picture show?
The house in the picture without walls or doors, it has oval shape, the house has
a thatched roof covered with dried coconut leaves and is supported by trees
What do you think is the purpose of each these features?
I think traditional houses are built only for the purpose of avoiding the weather
and taking advantage of natural light and fresh air from nature.
How do these features compare with a morden house where you live?
I think that traditional houses are usually built with ancient architecture and use
traditional building materials such as brick, wood, plaster, mortar and stone
while modern houses often turn to traditional houses. The architecture is simple,
neat and uses newer, more technologically advanced building materials such as
reinforced steel, concrete and plastic.
Live in a house like this – this one in your town
Would you like to live in a house like this? Why not?
I think not because I like the architecture of modern houses, for me home is not
only a place to live but also a home where I feel comfortable after tired working
hours.
What does a traditional house in your town look like?
The traditional houses in my hometown are layered with dried coconut leaves
and the walls are covered with dry leaves, but there are houses that use concrete
but the roof uses straw.
Describe building you enjoyed
Today, I want to talk about Petronas Twin Towers which are twin skyscraper in
the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. They were the tallest buildings in the
world until 2005 with 88-storey. They have a skybridge which act as a
connector between both towers and guests can access on.. In, fact, the skybridge
is not fully attached to the main buildings because the engineers was designed
in a special ways to give allowance for small movements during unpleasant
weathers and even prevents the bridge from breaking away from the towers.
The architecture is inspired by Malaysian and Islamic culture. There are the
shopping malls situated at the foot of the tower which is one of the most
popular shopping destinantion in Malaysia. It’s really interesting that I can
capture the breathtaking view of Kuala Lumpur in the observation desk and I
can get to know more about the Towers like the history of tower, exhibition,…
The higher I go, the more dizzy I feel. I really enjoy spending time there due to
not only theirs facilities but also theirs views surrounding the Petronas and I
really appreciate the architecture and design.
Different types of building
- I think school and theatres are different in size, shape and purpose. Schools
can be much bigger than theatres although some traditional theatres are very
big. Schools tend to be split into many smaller buildings with a playground
in the middle. Finally, schools are for education while the theatres are where
plays are performed and people get there for entertaining.
- I think modern and traditional theater are basically the same in terms of
effects, lighting, stage and background
- In my view, I think a museum is more vital to a town than a sports centre
because the museum plays an important role in educating the generations
about art and history, the locals have a chance of seeing several items of
historical or scientific value that can’t be seen anywhere else. I think the
people can improve their health or keep fit at home by having a resonable
diet
Types building in your town&school
- As I know, there are 2 type of buildings include Square-Monument-Museum
architectural complex and Poklong Garai Towers in my hometown
- I think I’m really impressed with the majestic beauty of the Square-
Monument-Museum architectural complex with cultural architecture typical
of indigenous culture and it was built in a tower shape and looks like a
sparkling crystal with beautiful and unique design, especially, if you pass by
here at night, I think you can’t take your eyes off it because there are many
lights with continuous changing color that look very interesting and unique
- My school buildings are split into three main building for education. They
are painted with two main colors, red and white, with 4 floors, constructed
and arranged in a zigzag, they’re big and very shiny because of theirs
fantastic structure, they looks pretty from a far distance.
