The minimalists
Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus were childhood friends who came from poor families. Before they
turned thirty, they were both earning a lot of money, but they reali sed that having a lot of money and possessions
wasn’t making them happy.
One day, Joshua accidentally discovered the idea of living with less on a blog and , after connecting with people who
called themselves ‘minimalists’, he started getting rid of things and living a minimalist lifestyle with very few
possessions. Then he convinced his friend Ryan to do the same.
In 2010, Joshua and Ryan started a blog to encourage their readers to follow a minimalist lifestyle, calling themselves
‘the Minimalists’. They had fifty-two visitors in the first month and since then they have helped over 20 million
people live meaningful lives with less, not just with their blog but with books, a podcast and a documentary.
To get started, Joshua and Ryan suggest you first decide why you want to become a minimalist. Ask yourself how
your life might be better with fewer things. This will increase your motivation. The second step is to start reducing
your possessions. They have invented the ‘thirty-day minimalism game’, which you can play with a friend or
colleague. Start by getting rid of one thing on the first day of the month, two on the second, three on the third and
so on. You can donate, sell or throw away your things, but they must be gone by midnight each day. The person who
keeps going for the longest is the winner.
What are the benefits of a minimalist lifestyle? Minimalists claim that they have more time to spend on the most
important things in their lives, such as relationships and pastimes, when they get rid of the majority of their
possessions. They believe that happiness isn’t found in things but in experiences.
So, how might your life be better with fewer things?
