EDITORS NOTE‌
PM Visits Mani‌pur.‌The PM finally paid a day visit to Manipur on 13 Sep. The
state has been engulfed in violence since May 23. Over 250 people have been‌
killed and thusands displaced within the state, forced to live in refugee camps. A
lot was expected from the visit, but other than making big-ticket infrastructure
projects, no major peace initiatives were visible. While investment does make
things easier for the people, finally, the solution lies in making efforts to bring the
two communities together. The visit was high on optics but low on the peace
dividends expected after the first visit by the PM since the state was rocked by
ethnic clashes.‌‌

Floods Across India.‌ This year, the nation saw unprecedented floods across
North and West India. While states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and
Punjab saw the worst floods in decades, other parts of India were also badly
affected. We need to not only improve our early warning systems but also our
response mechanism to undertake relief operations at this magnitude.‌‌

Trump Tariffs and India-China Relations.‌ India seems to be on the right

path to improve its relations with China after a gap of over five years. The Trump-
imposed tariffs of 50% have put cold water on our strategic and economic ties
with the USA. The SCO summit in China provided an opportunity for India to
mend fences with China. In the long run, it is important for India to have good
relations with its neighbors, especially China.‌‌

AT YMA, we are very excited to start our new batches for CDS and‌‌
NDA written exams. We are committed to providing high-quality‌‌
education and mentorsh‌ip online.‌‌

GOVERNNMENT ANNOUNCES NEW GST RULES‌

On 3 September 2025, the GST Council under Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman approved
sweeping reforms aimed at simplifying India’s indirect tax framework and easing the burden on
consumers. The number of Goods and Services Tax (GST) slabs has been rationalised from four to
just two tiers — 5% and 18% — with a special 40% slab for “sin” or luxury items. Key relief has
been granted to daily essentials like soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, and yoghurt by bringing them
into the 5% bracket; health and life insurance have been exempted from GST altogether. The
changes are set to become effective from 22 September 2025, coinciding with the festival of
Navratri. Officials project that these reforms will boost domestic consumption, improve
compliance, and provide relief to small businesses, farmers, women and the middle class.‌

NASA’S DISCOVERY ON SOLAR WIND‌

NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission has made a surprising discovery about the
behavior of the solar wind near Earth. The mission detected unusual plasma dynamics,
showing that charged particles interact in ways not previously understood. This finding
is crucial because solar storms and space weather have a direct impact on satellites,
GPS navigation, and secure communication networks that modern defence forces rely
upon. By improving our understanding of how the solar wind behaves, scientists can
develop better forecasting tools, which in turn strengthens the protection of military
assets in space and on the ground.‌

LIGHT-POWERED AI CHIP‌

A research team at the University of Florida has designed an innovative AI chip that
uses light, rather than electricity, for data processing. This shift to photonic computing
has achieved an efficiency nearly one hundred times greater than traditional chips. The
breakthrough is significant for defence applications, where AI is increasingly used in
real-time decision-making, autonomous drones, battlefield surveillance, and cyber
defence operations. The ability to run powerful AI systems with reduced energy
consumption and higher processing speeds could redefine how defence forces
integrate smart technologies into both offensive and defensive strategies.‌

LIQUID CARBON CAPTURED IN LAB‌

For the first time, scientists have successfully created and studied liquid carbon in a
laboratory setting, even if only for fleeting nanoseconds. Using a combination of high-
energy lasers and advanced X-ray imaging, they were able to observe carbon in states
that mimic the transition into diamond-like structures. This research has far-reaching
implications for defence and aerospace engineering. Insights from liquid carbon
studies could lead to the development of ultra-strong armour materials, more efficient
explosives, and durable aerospace components, all of which are vital in enhancing
national security and technological superiority.‌
