ATTACHMENT REPORT

Student Attachment Report at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) – Channel

1

Introduction
As part of the academic requirement for the completion of my studies, I undertook an
industrial attachment at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) Channel 1, a leading
national television station in Kenya. The attachment provided me with an opportunity to
gain hands-on experience, apply theoretical knowledge acquired in class, and understand
the practical operations within a real broadcasting environment. My placement was in the
technical department, where I served as a Technical Operator.

Objectives of the Attachment

 To acquire practical skills in television broadcasting and production.
 To gain exposure to real working environments and professional practices.
 To develop competencies in sound, video, lighting, and camera operations.
 To enhance teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a media setting.

Activities and Responsibilities

Sound Operation – I assisted in setting up and controlling microphones, sound mixers, and
audio levels during both live and recorded programs. I learned how to balance sound for
clarity and quality, an essential aspect of broadcast production.

Video Mixing – I gained practical experience in operating video mixers and switching
between multiple camera inputs. This included working on live studio productions where
accuracy and timing were crucial.

Lighting – I was introduced to studio lighting design and control. I helped in positioning,
adjusting, and testing different lighting equipment to ensure proper illumination and mood
for various programs.

Camera Work – I operated cameras during studio shoots and learned framing, focusing, and
movement techniques to achieve professional shots. This experience improved my
precision and creativity behind the camera.

Video Recording – I participated in recording programs, ensuring both audio and video
quality were maintained. I also assisted in setting up recording equipment and monitoring
the process throughout production.

Experience Gained
The attachment was highly valuable as it allowed me to:
- Apply classroom knowledge in a practical setting.
- Understand the teamwork and coordination required in broadcast production.
- Improve my technical competencies in handling broadcasting equipment.
- Develop discipline in working under tight schedules and meeting deadlines.
- Gain confidence in professional communication and interaction within a media
environment.

Challenges Encountered
Some of the challenges I faced included:
- Adapting to fast-paced live production environments where mistakes had to be minimized.
- Mastering technical equipment within a short period of time.
- Balancing multiple roles when required to support different teams simultaneously.

However, these challenges strengthened my adaptability, problem-solving, and learning

capacity.

Conclusion
My attachment at KBC Channel 1 was an invaluable experience that enriched my academic
and professional growth. It enhanced my technical skills in broadcasting, exposed me to
real-world media operations, and prepared me for future career opportunities in the
communication and media industry. I am grateful for the guidance, mentorship, and support
provided by the technical team at KBC during my stay.
