ABSTRACT.

The field attachment is a session where a trainee improves and gets used to the working
environment after the course work. Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic Farm have
allowed the trainee to acquire different skills,knowledge and experiences throughout
the session. Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic Farm have the following
enterprises;dairy cattle(freshian and ashier), poultry (broilers,laryers,improved
kienyeji), rabbits(New Zealand,Dutch), tea farming,bananas,passion fruits and
vegetables. This session was beneficial to both Animal Health and Production
Management Agricultural Extension students despite the following challenges;

Lack of enough working equipments (jembe,panga).

Poor schedule work.

Therefore it indicates that the programs were very beneficial and to be approved the farm
should purchase enough working equipments and have good schedule work plan so as to
make work easier and for effective production.

First, I thank the Almighty God for His protection during the attachment period. I also
thank our HOD Mr.Joshua,our manager Mr. Felix and Madam Getray our supervisor and
farm workers for guidance and support during the attachment.

CHAPTER ONE.

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE FIELD ATTACHMENT PROGRAM.

Field industrial attachment is a session when trainees go out to the field to get exposed and
familiarize themselves with the working environment. Is a period which trainees are expected to
acquire practical training and to have understanding of the environment practically, economically
and socially influences on management work performance.

1.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE ATTACHMENT.

Allows students to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to real-world
situations within professional environment.

Provides students with opportunity to explore different career paths and gain insights into
the day to day operation of the various industries.

Help the students to identify their strength and weaknesses in a professional setting which
can help them make informed career decisions.

Allows the students to connect with professionals in their field, building valuable
networks and mentor-ship opportunities.

Help the students to develop technical skills.

2.0 ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND.

2.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION OF KAIMOSI FRIENDA NATIONAL


POLYTECHNIC FARM.

Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic, formerly known as Friends College Kaimosi has a rich
history rooted in community development and vocational training. Established in 1971 by the
East African yearly .Meeting of friends church (Quakers), in collaboration with the local
community and partners from the USA and UK, leadership, small business management, and
entrepreneurship. In November 2024, it was elevated to a National Polytechnic signifying its
growth and expanded role in technical and vocational education.

2.2 GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONAL.

Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic is located in tropical rainforest environment, situated 60


acres of land along the Kisumu- Chavakali- Kapsabet- Eldoret road.It is near town of Kisumu,
Kakamega and Kpsabet about 35 km away. The institution is a key provider of technical and
vocational education in the region emphasizing and entrepreneurship.

2.3 ECOLOGICAL FACTORS.

Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic is located near the Kaimosi Westlands which are
currently undergoing rehabilitation conversation efforts.

2.4 CORE BUSINESS OF THE FARM.

Agriculture and environmental studies, with a focus on practical skills training in sustainable
agriculture, environmental conversation and modern farming techniques. The institution aims to
empower trainees with the knowledge and skills needs to address security, climate change and
recourse management challenges.

2.5 MAJOR CHALLENGES.

Inadequate funding farm operations and infrastructure development.

Difficult in attracting and training skilled agricultural personnel and the need to adopt.

Erratic rainfall, pests and diseases infestation.

Inadequate and outdated infrastructure including storage facilities, machinery and


irrigation.

2.6 ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE FARM.

Successful harvesting of stage at Kimosi Agricultural Training center.

Emphasizing practical, hands on training.

Provision on goods for commercial purpose.

Irrigation challenge during dry session.

Unstable market for some of the products

2.8 DUTIES OF THE FARM MANAGER.

1.Overall coordination of all activities.

2.Planning and budgeting for farm activities.

3.Receives all sales of the day and organize all purchase.

CHAPTER THREE.
3.0 DUTIES AND RESPONSILITIES.

3.1 CROP SECTION.

3.1.1 ESTABLISHMENT OF PASSION FRUIT PLANT.

The young grafted passion fruit plant is in spacing at 2cm between the plants and 3cm within the rows
and diameter of feet deep. After planting, watering is done using drip irrigation.

3.1.2 GENERAL MANAGEMENT.

Weeding is done one week after planting to control weeds and reduce competition of water and nutrients.
We also do pruning to the old passion fruit to control dis-bach diseases. Spraying is done weekly to
control pests and bacterial diseases. Some of chemicals used are rhidamill and vodex to control fungi and
velum and organic to control nematodes.

3.1.3 PASSION FRUIT HARVESTING.

Harvesting is done once a week and ripe fruits with purple color are picked.

3.1.4 ESTABLISHMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF VEGETABLES.

The main vegetables planted are kale, cabbage, spinach, beetroot and local vegetables (saga, mrenda,
managu, dodo); transplanting was mostly done early in the morning and late in the evening; this enables
the plant to adapt new environment. The local roots are placed insulin hormone a day before planting to
break seed dormancy and weeding is done weekly and spraying with ouduthrine to control fungi. Local
vegetables were mostly planted in the onset of rains.

3.2 ANIMAL SECTION.

3.2.1 HAND MILKING.

The milking equipment were assembled properly before milking was done like warm water, a clean towel
for drying the udder, milking jelly, milking bucket. Then the cow were restrained in the crush, the udder
was washed and dried using a clean udder clothe and milking process commenced by gently holding the
teat at the base of the teat using the thumb and first finger then squeezing directly the milk into the bucket
using other finger. Milking is done daily in the morning and evening and cows are given formulated dairy
meal white milking for high quality milk production.

3.2.2 GENERAL CLEANING.

Due to the availability of various enterprises at Kaimosi National Polytechnic Farm unlike dairy,
poultry and rabbit, cleanliness and hygiene was compulsory. In the poultry unit it comprises of
brooding pen, battery-cage pen, layers pen. Brooding and layer pen the litter was weekly
changed and daily turned to prevent dampness and diseases infection, and battery cage system
the sacks which were placed under cages were daily changed, cleaned and sun-dried. In the
rabbit-try unit the cages were thoroughly cleaned by sweeping using hard broom. In the dairy
unit the dung is daily collected and taken to the dumping site while the floor is thoroughly
scrubbed with hard brush. And rinsed with clean water and cows are also washed before leaving
to feeding areas

3.2.3 CUTTING NAPPIER GRASS.

Napier grass is cut and chopped into small pieces by use of a panga to enhance sufficient
utilization of foods.

3.2.4 PASTURE IDENTIFICATION, ESTABLISHMENT AND MANAGEMENT.

Various types of pasture were identified example nippier grass (pakchuang) bracheria, oats and
Guatemala grass.

3.2.5 DRUG IDENTIFICATION.

While controlling various types of parasites like internal parasites were used DUODIP and
TRITIX to control and internal parasite we used to dewarm.

3.2.6 TICK IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL.

One host tick examples; African blue tick, Asian blue tick were identified. Were controlled
through spraying by using effective acaraside once a week i.e. on Fridays using TRITIX and
DUODIP.

3.3.1 POULTRY PRODUCTION.

The farm reared different breeds of birds like improved kienyeji chicken breed (sasso) that kept for eggs
production. Eggs were artificially articulated. The farm aside reared broilers for commercial purpose and
also different rearing system were used like litter cage and deep litter system. General cleanliness was
regularly observed since poultry are tender in case of any infection.

3.3.2 RABBIT PRODUCTION.

The farm kept different breeds of rabbits; White Flemish Giant, Flemish Giant, Large White
Kenyan, Dutch and the White New Zealand. They kept for commercial purpose and for research
and learning by students. Cleanliness was regularly observed though in breeding and lack of
good management care was the main challenge facing the enterprise.

3.3.3 ANIMAL HANDLING AND DEWORMING.

Animals were restrained in a crush incase of any attendance or examination like dewormind,
health examination, artificial insemination and handled in a human manner.

3.3.4 NEW KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS GAINED.

The execution of personal initiative to the fullest enhances rapid growth of the farm. The skills of
the teamwork and hard work gained. Regular management of livestock is necessary at each level.

3.3.5 THINGS OF MOST INTEREST.

The teamwork spirit existed between casual workers and attaches.

3.3.6 THINGS OF LEAST INTEREST.

Interference with the work plan schedule hence conducting tasks not meant for the day.

3.3.7 CHALLENGES AND REMEDIED.

 Lack of adequate tools –Work with the right tools at the right tools.

 Shortage of the poultry feed –Formulating our own feeds.

 Lack of skilled casual workers –Educating them on what to be done.

4.0 SWOT ANALYSIS OF THE FIELD ATTACHMENT PROGRAME.

4.1 STRENGTHS.
 Issuing of students with attachment letters was done earlier hence enabled the
students to take time while looking for good farms to take attachment.
 Students gain practical hands on experience and develop soft skills like
communication, teamwork and time management.
 Programs increased technology. Awareness among farmers, as seen in one study
leading to better practices.
 Field attachment exposed students to the professional world, preparing them for
post graduation work.

4.2 WEAKNESSES.

Students were issued with courses outline on the topics they are supposed to cover while on attachment,
insurance covers were given late to the students hence some of farms could not accommodate the students
as they were needed immediately during application.

4.3 OPPORTUNITIES (CL).

Students were able to meet other attaches from different institutions hence helped networking on the same
job opportunities’ exposé students to more advanced practical skills hence boosted their knowledge and
hand of skills.

4.4 THREATS OF THE ATTACHMENT PROGRAME.

Insecurity in some parts of the country where students are attached may hinder the program. Students
attached to farms that are located in remote areas where roads are not possible especially during rain
seasons hence hindering them to start their duties early.

5.0CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION.

5.1 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the per-taking of the field attachment at Kaimosi Friends National Polytechnic
Farm aided in the achievement of various objectives that was to be met. The first opportunity
was given to attaches, secondly, the working experiences was gained and also helped to improve
my attitude towards agriculture. It also enhanced the co-working between the college and the
farm.

5.2 RECOMMENDATION.

Utilization of the farm for research whereby the farm can be available resource for
applied research in areas like sustainable agriculture.

To provide education or educate the casual worker hence improving the advancing
their skills and knowledge about agriculture.

Exploration of modern farming techniques to enhance productivity and


sustainability.

To encourage students to develop entrepreneurial skills by establishing scale


agricultural enterprises the far such as poultry farming, vegetables production.

Developing a marketing plan for the firms produce to ensure a steady income
stream and promote quality of agricultural product from the polytechnic.

The farm to focus on sustainable agricultural practices to minimize environmental


impact and promote long term viability.

By leveraging the strength of the farm and implementing these recommendations, Kaimosi Friends
National Polytechnic can further enhance its reputation as a leading provider of practical agricultural
education and training.
