Foundational history undergirds
current flag, motto, and seal
At a time when some people are being snatched off our
streets or persecuted by our federal government for what
they said or published, we should think deeply about the flag
of our Commonwealth before casting it aside.
Seeing our flag displayed by massachusetts lawmakers
visiting israel (“israel funded mass. lawmakers’ 5-day trip,”
metro, Sept. 27) and treated as a political football by Joan
vennochi (“is massachusetts’ flag debate a sign of shifting
political winds?” opinion, Sept. 30) prompts me to beg citi-
zens to study the history of our flag, motto, and seal for
themselves.
our motto, “Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem,”
was excerpted and adopted 250 years ago from the personal
motto of English soldier and statesman Algernon Sidney,
who had been beheaded in 1683 for the views expressed in
his manuscript “Discourses Concerning government.”
the manuscript was subsequently published with his
motto on the frontispiece and widely read, especially as part
of a “Library of Liberty” promoted and underwritten by
thomas Hollis in the 1700s. Harvard’s library was a benefi-
ciary.
Although little read today, Sidney’s ideas were influential
among the founding fathers, especially regarding forceful
resistance to tyranny, freedom of the press, and the bill of
rights. His motto of militant liberalism, “manus haec inimica
tyrannis, ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem” (“this
hand, hostile to tyrants, seeks with the sword a quiet peace
under liberty”), lives on in our flag.
