UPF Quarterly Inspection Color Codes

The UPF project performs quarterly inspections on equipment and personal protective
equipment which is marked as successfully completed by the application of colored tape,
tag, tie, or other equivalent marking to the inspected item. The color represents a
specific period of the year (1st quarter, 2nd quarter, etc.) during which the inspection is
valid. This list provides the color code schedule applicable for each quarter.
Inspections can start two weeks prior to the start of a new quarter and should be
completed no later than two weeks into the new quarter. Items that are not in-use do not
require inspection/marking until being issued for use.
Items that require a quarterly inspection and marking include:
1) Manual Material Lift Systems for overhead lifting (excluding Gin Wheels, Gin wheels will be
inspected by the user (Daily) prior to use)
2) Below the Hook rigging and rigging hardware:
Hooks Shackles Slings (Wire rope and Synthetic)
Chain Falls/Hoists Bridles Master links, Spreader Bars and Spreader Beams

3) Personal fall protection equipment (full-body harness, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines)


Full Body Harness Lanyards Self-Retracting Life-Lines (SRLs)
Carabiners D-Ring Extenders Note: Any part of a PFAS that is easily removed
and used individually

4) Portable ladders (Step ladders, Extension ladders)


5) Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) as part of the 480-volt Temporary power distribution and
120v GFCI pig tails.
6) All 480-volt temporary power distribution cables.
NOTE: In addition to visually marking these items, quarterly inspections must be
documented per procedural requirement via inspection forms or project-
approved electronic database (e.g., Toolhound™).

“In use Rigging” (e.g. secondary rigging securing a load) will not be inspected while in use.
