Meropenem

This document summarizes information about the antibiotic meropenem. It is bactericidal, inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis and causing cell death. It is indicated for susceptible intra-abdominal infections, bacterial meningitis in pediatric patients, complicated skin infections, and unlabeled uses including community acquired pneumonia and therapy for febrile neutropenia. Contraindications include allergy to related antibiotics, lactation, and use cautiously with certain conditions. Adverse effects involve the CNS, GI tract, and other issues like superinfections. Nursing considerations include obtaining cultures before use, monitoring for superinfections, and discontinuing for signs of colitis.
