Guided Writing Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is for a 3rd grade small group guided writing lesson. The students will write their own personal postcards about a place they have traveled with support from the teacher. Lesson Topic: Guided Writing Description of Classroom:


-3rd Grade -10 Boys & 10 Girls -2 Girls & 2 Boys will be seated at kidney table with teacher.

Background:
The lesson takes place during small group.

Content Objective(s):
Students will be able to write on their own.

Language Objective(s):
-The students will listen to a small section the teacher reads from selected text. -The students will write their short story with little to no mistakes. -The students will share their stories with the group with little to no mistakes.

Nevada Standards:
5.3.1 Use prewriting strategies to plan written work. 6.3.2 Write paragraphs about experiences and/or events that are appropriate to audience and purpose that include: logical sequence, character, & setting.

Teaching Strategies:
Students in small group will write their personal post card as the teacher monitors and assists for any mistakes.

Warm Up Activity:
-Will introduce the book Meerkat Mail. -Read a few pages from the book. -Share my post card to students on where I have been as an example. -Before creating a Circle Map, ask students to think where a place they have traveled to that they Want to write about. Examples: Disneyland, grandmothers house, a specific country, etc. -Create Circle Map to brainstorm ideas as a group.

Lesson Sequence:
1. Students will begin to write out their experiences on a post card. 2. As students are writing, the teacher will monitor and assist with grammar, spelling, and punctuation. 3. If a student makes a mistake, the teacher will refer back to circle map and assist if struggling.

Accommodations:
Will meet all required students accommodations.

Supplementary Materials:
-Meerkat Mail text -Post Card -Pencils -Circle Map

Review/Assessment:
-Students will revise their post card for punctuation, grammar, & spelling. -Students will share their post card with the group.
