MA Driver's License Guide for Adults

To obtain a Massachusetts driver's license, one must first get a learner's permit by passing a written exam at the RMV office. With a permit, one can drive only with a licensed adult over 21 in the car. To get a license, one must schedule a road test by calling the RMV and bring a qualifying vehicle and licensed adult sponsor on the test date. If the road test is passed, the permit must be exchanged for a license and additional fees paid. The process involves documentation, exams, permits, road tests, and fees to ultimately receive a Massachusetts driver's license.

Getting a Massachusetts Drivers License

http://www.mass.gov/rmv/license/5classd.htm What to do? Firstly, it is advised that you learn as much as you can through a MA Registry of Motor Vehicles (MRV) office or their website at www.state.ma.us/rmv. Here you can learn about the different classes of licenses and the requirements needed to obtain each. Most students obtain a class D license. There is an MRV office in Worcester at 611 Main Street. It is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm and until 7:00 pm on Thursdays. 1. Apply for the Class D permit. a. Documentation requirements if you are 18 years of age or older you must present the following: (Please visit the RMV website if you are younger than 18 years of age.) i. SSN Card or denial letter. (If you do not have one, you should apply for one and wait until you get it before you go to the Registry. For people who are not eligible for a Social Security Number, it is necessary to APPLY for a Social Security Number and ask for a letter stating that the Social Security Administration denied the request. That denial letter must be submitted to the Registry instead of the Social Security Number and be dated within 30 days of submission.) ii. Passport proving date of birth. iii. Document proving signature (cancelled bank check dated within 60 days or lease agreement) iv. Document proving Massachusetts residency (Bank statement, lease agreement, or certificate of attendance form the Office of International Students and Scholars) Note: You must submit a separate document to satisfy each of the four documentation requirements. All documents must be originals. Photocopies will not be accepted. b. Other Forms: It is also advised that you take your I-20 or DS-2019 Form and I-94 card, although these cannot be used as proof of identification. c. The written test consists of twenty (20) questions. You must answer fourteen (14) questions correctly to pass. You should review the Drivers Manual found on RMW website.
