Performance: The Performance Will Start With A Voice-Over From Irena Carlton

Tariq witnessed horrific events during the Iraq war, including seeing the bodies of 6 headless young girls. This memory has caused him great distress through intrusive flashbacks. As part of his therapy, Tariq will perform a symbolic Islamic funeral ritual for the 6 girls using dolls to represent them. The performance will include washing and shrouding the dolls, reciting a funeral prayer, and end with a recitation of a poem by Rumi.

Performance: The performance will start with a voice-over from Irena Carlton (Tariqs long-term mental health support

worker) giving some (have not decided on the depth and length yet?) exposition of Tariqs background (obviously confidential). She will say something similar to what she said when she referred him into Freedom from Torture (She has been such a huge part of his recovery). She was also the champion poetical reciter of the former Yugoslavia. Then verbatim from Tariq of the time that he saw the bodies of 6 headless girls. This was one of his main problems-intrusions-flashbacks when he first started seeing me. He will speak of the effects that this had on him and the need of giving them a Islamic burial [We did this in psychotherapy]. This will be followed by me doing a symbolic performance, giving the girls an Islamic jinaza 1 the shamans drum music will be played throughout the Jinaza. It will be a ritual performance the music, My/Tariqs movements and the inner emotional symphony of the connections between the 6 headless girls and all the women that Tariq has lost; his mother, his wife, his sister, his daughters. The Jinaze consist of washing (with great tenderness; I want to convey intimacy between Tariq, the 6 headless girls and the audience. Invite them in), then me wrapping the 6 headless girls in white cloth to - the funeral shroud a Kafan. Then I will pray/recite the funeral prayer Surat al Fatia in Arabic The performance will end with voice over of Irena Carlton reciting an appropriate poem of Rumi.

Washing and Shrouding

In preparation for burial, the family or other members of the community will wash and shroud the body. (If the deceased was killed as a martyr, this step is not performed; martyrs are buried in the clothes they died in.) The deceased will be washed respectfully, with clean and scented water, in a manner similar to how Muslims make ablutions for prayer. The body will then be wrapped in sheets of clean, white cloth (called the kafan). Funeral Prayers The deceased is then transported to the site of the funeral prayers ( salat-l-janazah). These prayers are commonly held outdoors, in a courtyard or public square, not inside the mosque. The community gathers, and the imam (prayer leader) stands in front of the deceased, facing away from the worshippers. The funeral prayer is similar in structure to the five daily prayers, with a few variations. (For example, there is no bowing or prostration, and the entire prayer is said silently but for a few words.) Burial The deceased is then taken to the cemetery for burial (al-dafin). While all members of the community attend the funeral prayers, only the men of the community accompany the body to the gravesite. It is preferred for a Muslim to be buried where he or she died, and not be transported to another location or country (which may cause delays or require embalming the body). If available, a cemetery (or section of one) set aside for Muslims is preferred. The deceased is laid in the grave (without a coffin if permitted by local law) on his or her right side, facing Mecca. At the gravesite, it is discouraged for people to erect tombstones, elaborate markers, or put flowers or other momentos. Rather, one should humbly remember Allah and His mercy, and pray for the deceased.

In the name of God, the infinitely Compassionate and Merciful. Praise be to God, Lord of all the worlds. The Compassionate, the Merciful. Ruler on the Day of Reckoning. You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help. Guide us on the straight path, the path of those who have received your grace; not the path of those who have brought down wrath, nor of those who wander astray. Amen.
