he Shiva Purana (Sanskrit: ??? ?????, Siva Pura?
a) or Shiva Mahapurana is one of the puranas (a genre of Hindu religious texts), dedicated to the god Shiva. Acc ording to a tradition which is stated in the Vayaviya Sa?hita (the Venkateshvara Press edition) of this text, the original text was known as the Shaiva Purana. Shiva Purana is a tamas purana.[1] According to tradition, the purana originally consisted of twelve Sa?hitas and 1 00,000 slokas (verses). After the reconstruction and the abridgement by Vedavyas a, the extant text comprises 24000 slokas (verses), which he taught to his disci ple Romaharshana (or Lomaharshana). Sa?hita (or Ma

Several other Sa?hitas are also ascribed to the Siva Pura?a. These are the Isana Sa?hita, the Isvara Sa?hita, the Surya Sa?hita, the Tirthak?etramahatmya Sa?hit a and the Manavi Sa?hita Haraprasad Shastri mentioned in the Notices of Sanskrit MSS IV, pp. 220 3, Nos, 29 8 299 about another manuscript of the Siva Pura?a, which is divided into two khand as (parts), the Purvakha??a and the Uttarakha??a. The Purvakha??a consists 3270 slokas in 51 chapters written in Nagari script and the Uttarakha??a has 45 chapt ers written in Oriya script. It was preserved in Mahimprakash Brahmachari Matha in Puri. The Purvakha??a of this manuscript is same as the Sanatkumara Sa?hita o f the Vangavasi Press edition.
