Weather and Climate

UbD Lesson Plan Template Stage 1: Desired Results

Next Generation Science Standards 3-ESS3-1. Make a claim about the merit of a design solution that reduces the impacts of a weather- related hazard. [Clarification Statement: Examples of design solutions to weatherrelated hazards could include barriers to prevent flooding, wind resistant roofs, and lightning rods.]
ESS3.B: Natural Hazards A variety of natural hazards result from natural processes. Humans cannot eliminate natural hazards but can take steps to reduce their impacts. (3-ESS3-1)

Understandings: Students will understand .. That different disasters happen throughout the world depending on the location. That humans can not eliminate a natural disaster but can take preventions to reduce the tragedy it can cause.

Essential Question(s): How can we safeguard our environment? Can we predict when a natural disaster will happen?

Students will know. Academic language such as: Disaster- a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe, that causes great damage or loss of life Location- a particular place or position Tornado- a mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnelshaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system Hurricane- a storm with a violent wind

Students will be able to.. Define what a natural disaster is List three different natural disasters that take place in the United States and describe the impact these disasters have on the environment

Earthquake- a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action Wildfire- a large, destructive forest- or brush-fire that spreads quickly Volcano- a mountain or hill, typically conical, having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are or have been erupted from the earth's crust Tsunami- a long high sea wave caused by an earthquake, submarine landslide, or other disturbance. Floods- an overflowing of a large amount of water beyond its normal confines, esp. over what is normally dry land Mudslides- a mass of mud and other earthy material that is falling or has fallen down a hillside or other slope Rockslide- an avalanche of rock

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Performance Tasks: The students will be assessed by the part two of their certain prompt. The students will be assessed on their class presentation of the specific disaster. Other Evidence: The students will be assessed on how well they work in a group.

Stage 3: Learning Plan

Learning Activities:

This lesson will take about two to three class periods. One class period should be taken place in the computer lab in order for the students to complete part one of their specfic prompt. Start the lesson off by showing this video to activate their prior knowledge. http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id =151927 As a class discuss some of the disasters that were shown in the video. The academic language listed above are the disasters shown in the video. Now lets focus on three major natural disasters that are very common in the United States: Hurricanes Earthquakes Tornados Divide the class up into 3 teams based on their academic levels and assign each team one the three disasters listed above. Each team will receive a prompt that they complete. Some parts will be individually and others as a group. After the prompt is completed, the group will present part three of the prompt to the class. The earthquake group will be the above grade level students. The tornado group will be on grade level students. The hurricane group will be the below group level group.

Itemized Attachments: 1. Earthquake video http://www.neok12.com/video/NaturalDisasters/zX06611b03056651036a0141.htm 2. After watching this video as a group, discuss and write a few sentences that you witnessed while watching. Then individually write a journal entry about what it would be like to experience an earthquake.

3. Next, as a group come up with ideas on how to protect your house and what implications you can do to prevent damage. Be creative! Write down the ideas in complete sentences the group came up with and explain why you think these will help reduce the impact of the earthquake. You will be presenting this to the class.

1. Tornado video http://www.neok12.com/video/NaturalDisasters/zX7f5b4f7252780c74506155.htm 2. After watching this video as a group, discuss what you witnessed and bullet some examples. Then individually create a timeline of what it would be like to be caught in a tornado. 3. Next, as a group come up with ideas and bullet them down on a piece of paper on how to protect your house and implications you can do to prevent damage and keep you and your family safe. Be creative! You will be presenting this to the class so be able to explain why you choose the ideas you did. 1. Hurricane video http://www.neok12.com/video/NaturalDisasters/zX4b09755003584b5759007f.htm 2. After watching the video as a group discuss what you saw and together write a journal entry about what it would be like to experience a hurricane. 3. Next, as a group come up with ideas and draw them out on construction paper on how to protect your house and implications you can do to prevent damage and keep you and your family safe. Be creative! You will be presenting this to the class so make sure you are able to explain why you choose the ideas you did.
