1 Introduction
Computer aided design (CAD) is an extremely important tool in modern object design and
manufacture. In today’s fast-paced manufacturing industry, the importance of being able to use a cost-
effective, efficient CAD software that addresses the needs of our company is essential for its success.
There are many companies that produce such software; however, for the sake of FrogiePrice’s mission
of providing our customers with safe, well-designed and fun products, it is crucial to be able to choose
one CAD software tool in the market that best addresses our requirements; that is the mission of this
project.
During the course of this presentation, a list of CAD software tools will be reviewed according to
price, popularity, ease of use, requirements and features. The best package for our company to
purchase will be chosen towards the end of this project and the reasons for doing so will be as well put
forth.
2 Objective
It has been stated that our company, FrogiePrice Inc. is in need of a computer aided design
software package to address its design and manufacturing needs in a fast, efficient and secure way. A
market study was conducted with the objective of find out the best software package to be purchased
by our institution. This presentation to follow will cover seven of the top CAD tools out in the market
and will conduct, for each one of them, a study of its popularity, capabilities, best price, requirements,
features, user share growth and ease of use.
The packages chosen for this study were: AutoCAD 2010 developed by Autodesk, TurboCAD by
IMSI/Design, Alibre Design Standard by Alibre, SolidWorks by SolidWorks Corp., Pro/Engineer by PTC,
Microstation by Bentley Systems, and Vectorworks by Nemetschek North America. All the above
software packages present the basic features required by our company; the sections below are
dedicated to elaborate and compare the features of each software package in order to empower our
organization with the knowledge to make an educated decision after this presentation. In addition to
the above-mentioned goals, a study will be conducted to evaluate the two productivity tools
ProductView Express from PTC and eDrawings Viewer and Publisher from SolidWorks. In addition to this,
we will examine the two freeware productivity tools: ProductView Express from PTC and eDrawings
Viewer and Publisher from SolidWorks. Also, sections of this report will be dedicated both to compare
PRO/Engineer with other CAD software, and to conduct a brief survey on the popularity of the CAD
packages previously mentioned in some job search websites.1
Relevant information, sites and figures will be specified to give the reader a better understanding of
what is evaluated.

3 Results
3.1 AutoCAD 2010
User share: over 9 million users worldwide2, 85% of the market3
User growth: 20% as AutoDesk4
Special Features: AutoCAD is one of the world’s leading 2D and 3D design software packages, and
perhaps, the most popular. Its latest version features an array of management, editing and automation
tools to help you make your design faster and of greater quality. It offers the ability to work with several
files seamlessly at the same time; exploring your 3D model is made simplistic with new intuitive and
accessible tools. It is also able to publish and import PDF-format files; while continuing to offer support
for DWG format. It allows for customization in order to address the customer’s specific needs and time
demands. Linking MS Excel data to designs is made available and easy; working in layers gives the
opportunity to minimize errors and the dynamic prompts feature makes intelligent suggestions for
performing a specific action at specific times during the construction of your project.5
Some drawbacks of this software are that it is exclusively for Microsoft Windows operating
systems. The installation of an emulator like VMware or Wine can solve this problem; however, the
program becomes subject to a number of performance issues that surface when working on 3D models
or large projects.6
Extension/Third party software: In addition to providing support for PDF and XLS formats, and allowing
the user to configure the program to meet specific needs; AutoCAD supports various Application
Programming Interfaces (APIs) for automation and customization. These are AutoLisp, VisualLisp, VBA,
.NET and ObjectARX. The latter is a C++ class library that allows creating AutoCAD third-party
applications. It also has a Finite Element Analysis feature, very important to solve engineering problems.
Ease of Use: AutoCAD’s parent company, AutoDesk, has been on the market for over two decades; this
has provided them with considerable experience and “feel” of its customers’ needs. One of the main
factors that provide AutoCAD a leading position in the market is its ease of use and ability to be picked
up by a first-timer and learned quickly. Conversely, the many features that AutoCAD offers may fail to be
put to work by someone who just started using the program; however there exist many learning
resources from online tutorials, video demonstrations to entire books about the subject. In addition to
these, AutoDesk also offers a free trial and special editions for those who might want to try out the
software before committing.
Price: If purchased directly from the company, it costs $3995.00 for a standalone version, and $4445.00
with a subscription. There exist local vendors who are free to set their own prices, but most oscillate
around the original prices.
4|Page
3.2 TurboCAD
User share: about 250000 users worldwide7
User growth: 17%
Special Features: TurboCAD comes with new improved controls to help the user create and modify with
just one click. There is new terrain editing, a new Face-to-Face-Loft function that lets you build objects
connecting from one part to another, improved geometric alignment aids that help perform frequent
tasks like snapping, using tangent lines, aligning, and using parallel lines.8 TurboCAD is compatible with
all computer-aided design formats that exist in today’s industry; this makes it easy to transport projects
from one program to another and not lose valuable data. It is made available for both mayor operating
systems: MS Windows and Mac.9
TurboCAD is a program centered on building individual parts and lacks many of the assembly-
related features that are common in other CAD programs today. Also, according to customer reviews;
TurboCAD’s ability to save as DWG-type file may often disrupt the original design, which requires the
designed to fix the problem in another program. 10
Extension/Third party software: There is a mechanical tool set for $99.95 that contains a lot more
functions to help design parts and objects. There are various plug-ins that can be used to power-up
TurboCAD and expand its capabilities; these include TurboSketch for sketching purposes, Animation Lab
4 to produce animations and others. Third-party addons are available online for a very wide range of
uses.
Ease of Use: Overall, the program is fairly easy to use; for those who find it otherwise, there are several
tutorials online and books to buy on the subject. In addition, the company is currently offering free
training/tutorial DVD for those who buy TurboCAD’s newest version.
Price: $1295.0011
3.3 Alibre Design Standard
User share: Around 30000 users worldwide.
User growth: 6.3% annually12
Special Features: Alibre uses parametric design to help the user create parts easier and faster, and
allows for minimum reworking time for the user to modify a design. It is able to integrate FEM analysis
and create a Bill of Materials easily. It supports MS Excel data, which allows for documenting parts or
assemblies easily; it also supports PDF, DWG and DXF type files to help import or export designs already
made in other software. 2D drafting is available and fully integrated with its 3D counterparts in a specific
design such that a modification in either form will automatically be updated and reflected on the other.
It also possesses a tool to quickly create exploded views of the design at hand, an easy to use sheet-
metal tool to help with such creations, an advanced 3D rendering tool to give the best representations
5|Page
of the user’s work, the capability of creating 3D PDF files from finished projects, a motion simulation and
analysis tool and a common object library.13
Alibre is not ported to Mac computers; this may prove to be a complaint for many users who
prefer using that operating system. Due to its very low price, third-party add-ons have had to either
lower their prices substantially or cease to offer their product; these discrepancies have resulted in
some loss of third party support for the program.14
Extension/Third party Software: Alibre Design Standard can load add-ons very easily.
Ease of Use: Very easy to use due to its likeness to other popular CAD programs, this allows users who
have had experience with other software to learn Alibre very fast. There are online tutorials, videos and
guides about getting started with the program for newcomers.
Price: Starting from $999.00 at Alibre’s website; recently, Alibre announced it’s product to be sold at the
much lower price of $99.
3.4 SolidWorks
User share: Over 1000000 users worldwide.15
User growth: 25%16
Special features: SolidWorks is a very complete software package designed to provide the best tools to
help the user create more accurate, durable and viable designs. It includes a tool called SWIFT that
automates detail works, identifies and solves problems, giving greater efficiency to the designer;
regardless of being a beginner or an expert. It includes a tool that converts DWG drawings from
AutoCAD into 3D renderings; a library of predefined actions and parts to help speed up the drawing
process; improved graphics engine, advanced surfacing tools, welding and molding design tools,
assembly modeling and motion, the capability to do FEM analysis on structures, photo realistic
rendering, creation of a Bill of Materials and data translation from other major CAD softwares are some
of the features that identify SolidWorks’ latest product. In addition, SolidWorks supports common file
formats of the likes of DWG, DXF, JPEG, PDF, TIF, AVI, STL and eDrawings among others.17
One drawback to the software is that it is not ported to Mac operating systems; it can only run
on MS Windows.18
Extension/Third party software: SolidWorks is designed to allow third-party developers to create useful
add-ons to enhance the programs capabilities and ease of use. SolidWorks Corp. has release various
extensions to the program to enhance its abilities, and there exist many sites where third-party software
can be obtained.
Ease of Use: SolidWorks is software that has an average learning curve; it is simply a matter of time to
get accustomed to it. Despite its many features, the program is designed to bring these out to the
6|Page
attention of the designer. Nevertheless there exist online tutorials that can help a beginner to
understand the program and realize its potential.
Price: Oscillates around $2995.00, it has an optional yearly maintenance fee of around $1000.0019
3.5 PRO/Engineer
User share: About 50000 users20
User growth: 1.2% as PTC21
Special Features: Pro/Engineer allows the user to create designs and drawings faster with real-time,
dynamic editing. It offers new and useful geometrical capabilities to create sheet metal, solid, assembly
modeling, weldment and technical surfacing designs. Pro/Engineer makes it very simple to create bill of
materials and other common drawing aspects. It also supports common file types in the CAD industry
like DWG, DXF, IGES, STEP, Parasolid, JT and ASIC import. It facilitates design collaboration by
implementing a sharing network that allows users to save time by using a preexisting design already
made by a fellow user. The software is in general considered to be very versatile.22
Drawbacks of Pro/Engineer are that it is solely a 3D software and that, due to its parametric
approach to part-design it may not be for everyone; as it may lack features that other CAD software that
use a different approach may have.23
Extension/Third party software: There are a number of third party add-ons listed in popular CAD
websites to enhance the capabilities of the main program.
Ease of Use: There is a steep learning curve for Pro/Engineer, as it offers a very wide range of tools to
the user that may go unused. However, there exist tutorials, training programs and entire books about
how to learn and use the program efficiently.
Price: $4995.00
3.6 Microstation
User share: Over 300000 users worldwide.24
User growth: 16% as Bentley Systems.25
Special Features: Supports DWG and DGN file format and contains a module for GPS data. Provides
multisnap ability, PDF creation, and the capability of adjusting the software to the user’s demands. In
many respects, Microstation has improved over its past versions, including the ability to read AutoCAD’s
native DWG format; a feature that in earlier versions, was not available. Its graphics are powered by
Microsoft’s DirectX, which gives the software smooth coloring and shading, advanced photorealistic
rendering tools and animation system. Microstation is also capable of providing templates in order to
make multiple drawings consistent. 26
7|Page
Some customers have complained about how cumbersome it is to manipulate text in
Microstation, while others blame a rather steep learning curve. Also, Microstation is only available for
PC’s27. Nevertheless, Microstation remains one of the top CAD software packages out in today’s market.
Extension/Third party software: Microstation offers support for third party extensions that improve
networking capabilities, object libraries and user customization.
Ease of use: Originally, Microstation had a steep learning curve, unforgiving to new users; with the
course of the years, the program has been modified to mitigate this issue. Nowadays some customers
still find the program hard to learn but once they become accustomed to it; they prefer it over any other
CAD software. The official website and other independent sites offer, however, training and tutorials for
free or at a reasonable cost.
Price: $4795.00
3.7 VectorWorks
User share: Over 400000 users worldwide.28
User growth: 2.9%29
Special Features: The software allows for easy and fast creation of objects in 2D and 3D, and the ability
to create objects in 2D and turn them into a 3D model and visceversa. VectorWorks supports familiar file
types like DWG and IFC; other file formats compatible with VectorWorks are sketchup, 3ds, SHP, JPG,
PDF, TIF, EPS, GIF and BMP. It also allows users to send models to 3D printers and other prototyping
machines. VectorWorks also possesses a data-tracking capability that allows users to create material
lists or reports based on what is included on the project. The plug-in Renderworks allows the user to
give a more realistic look to their works by using advanced tools. It also incorporates a built-in language
package called VectorScript to enable users to create or modify tools to fit their own requirements. The
software is also able to run on both PC and MAC computers.30
A drawback of this software is that its learning curve is relatively steep, due to the variety of
tools that are made available in the new version. The program, albeit not lacking the features that
FrogiePrice looks for, may be directed more towards architectural design and lighting works. The price
has also slightly escalated from previous versions.
Extension/Third party software: VectorWorks is capable of integrating third-party extensions; these
range from objects, images, textures to complex plug-ins.
Ease of Use: As stated above, due to the addition of new features to compete with the current CAD
software market, VectorWorks’ learning curve is steep. It has many new functions and hidden features
that might be too difficult for a new user to learn first-hand. Learning VectorWorks requires time.
Tutorials and Training manuals are available in the official product website as well as from other sites.
8|Page
Price: The price for this software is $1295.00 directly from the website. There are independent resellers
who are free to set their own prices.
3.8 ProductView Express
ProductView Express from PTC is a tool that permits viewing of PRO/Engineer designs, it is
available for download for free at the PTC website. Convenience is the main strength of this software, as
it is able to import large assemblies, parts or drawings in a quick way without needing authoring
software. It offers great control over the viewing of those files that are imported, using zooming,
panning and spinning tools; as it is also capable of removing hidden lines and annotations that may
interfere with the design being examined. The ability to see product assembly information is also
incorporated on ProductView Express.31
3.9 EDrawings Viewer and Publisher
EDrawings Viewer is a freeware application that can be downloaded at the SolidWorks website. It
serves to examine and print files from two of the major CAD software in today’s market: SolidWorks and
AutoCAD, as it is also able to work with any eDrawing-type file. It is also capable of exporting JPG, TIF, or
BMP data to create presentations. The program also allows the user to manipulate designs freely and
import design analyses from CosmoWorks software. 32
EDrawings Publisher is, as well, a freeware tool accessible through the SolidWorks website that
allows the user to publish eDrawings files directly from CAD softwares such as AutoCAD, CATIA,
PRO/Engineer and SolidWorks among others. The transition from a CAD file to an eDrawings file-type
reduces bandwith by 95%, making the file easier to handle and distribute.33
3.10 Pro/Engineer vs. other CAD software
Pro/Engineer is among the top CAD software out in the market today; it compiles a useful array of
features that help the user get the most out of their time and the program itself. Among Pro/Engineer’s
biggest strength is its parametric platform; unlike other CAD programs, it uses an approach to part-
building based on specific dimensions, parameters and relationship that help establish a recipe for
objects due for serial manufacturing, or that may have to comply with specific standards of dimension
and/or performance. Another feature that separates Pro/Engineer from the rest of the CAD solution
packages that exist today is its integrated CAD, CAM and CAE (computer-aided design, manufacture and
engineering respectively) modules. This allows the customer to seamlessly correlate data from one
aspect of the building-process to another without having to go through conversion.
In other aspects, Pro/Engineer is able to stand in the same ground as any other CAD software. It
combines must-have abilities like Finite Element Method capabilities, compatibility with several popular
CAD file-types like DWG, DXF, IGES or STEP, and an affordable maintenance/support program.
Pro/Engineer may lack tools for presentation building that other CAD software like AutoCAD or
SolidWorks count with; instead, the tools to create presentations and share design data are available
through Windchill ProductPoint, a software also developed by PTC; however, this product must be
purchased at a price of $1500.
9|Page
In terms of price, Pro/Engineer comes at quite a high price ($4995.00 compared to this
presentation’s average of $2845.57). However, considering the programs unique features, its seamless
integration of the CAD, CAM and CAE modules and its approach to the design and manufacturing
process, the pricing isn’t unfair. Below is a chart with a brief comparison of Pro/Engineer with other CAD

As our company progresses further into today’s competitive market; it is important to realize the
value of being able to deliver the best product possible with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness. Buying
CAD software packages; finding, hiring and training the staff to become proficient with it; and in
addition, provide them with a stable job regardless of how much actual Design work is needed at the
time may be too much for our company to handle. Computer-aided design jobs are necessary but are
not always needed and training costs time and money. In addition, as we have seen in this presentation,
CAD software companies are in a competition of their own and strive to gain market share by regularly
releasing new versions of their product with new features and functionalities.
Rather than encouraging any company to purchase a CAD product, the survey presented above
shows that there are CAD-specific jobs; these are companies, or groups, that specialize on hiring people
with extensive knowledge of CAD programs; and that the costs of purchasing and maintaining CAD-
software and its workers is high.
As a result I suggest our company, FrogiePrice Inc. to outsource its CAD drawings; this could be a
decision that means continuity or stagnation for our small company, as it finds its way forward in today’s
competitive toy market. Outsourcing, contrary to what others may think, is ultimately beneficial for
everyone, from the company itself to the public in general. Without the available funds that
outsourcing could provide, an institution would eventually find itself in the position of having to make a
decision on laying off workers to stay afloat or close altogether. Outsourcing provides jobs to people
who really need them and who really know how to perform their work; this, in turn, provides our
company with the certainty that we are paying exactly for what we need.
5 Discussion
After learning about a select group of CAD software solutions available to our institution we are
now in the position of making a decision on which one of them would me most useful to meet our
requirements. I will base this decision on three parameters:
5.1 FEM analysis
I find that the ability to conveniently carry out a finite element method analysis on individual parts
or assemblies is crucial and bears great importance at the time of testing the durability and safety
of our toys.
5.2 Ability to work with and export presentation-ready PDF documents
Being able to manipulate and export PDF documents that are ready to be shared and presented to
someone other than the engineer is important, given the importance that presentation, aesthetics
and appeal have in our line of work. FrogiePrice Inc. must count with a tool that enables them to
incorporate this aspect of the engineering process.
12 | P a g e
5.3 Price
Choosing a cost-effective tool is of utmost importance to a small company like FrogiePrice Inc. This
does not only mean to choose the product that minimizes price and maximizes results, but also
choosing a reliable software package; one that offers a superior maintenance program coupled
with availability of upgrades, resources and extensions.
After examining these three parameters, and learning about the different software options
featured in this survey; I find that the most cost-effective, reliable, inexpensive, and complete software
package that would fit in appropriately with our company’s demands is SolidWorks by SolidWorks Inc.
Aside from being a trusted, market-leading CAD tool; SolidWorks complies positively with the three
parameters stated above. It also counts with several add-ons and extensions to enhance its capabilities,
like the two free-ware tools eDrawings Viewer and Publisher, available for download at the SolidWorks
website.
6 Conclusion
I hope this presentation has been useful to our company and gives it a broader, more educated
understanding of its needs and of the many ways of fulfilling it. After conducting a survey of each CAD
software package presented in this paper it has been concluded that the SolidWorks from SolidWorks
Inc. is the most cost-effective, powerful and specific solution to our CAD demands.
This research also briefly surveyed the CAD job market and proposed the possibility of outsourcing
as a cheaper, more effective solution to our demands.
