MF History: First Phase - 1964-1987

The mutual fund industry in India has gone through 4 phases of development since its inception in 1963. In the first phase (1963-1987), the Unit Trust of India (UTI) was established and regulated mutual funds. In the second phase (1987-1993), several public sector banks set up mutual funds. The third phase (1993-2003) saw the entry of private sector funds following new regulations. In the fourth phase (since 2003), UTI was bifurcated into two separate entities and consolidation in the industry increased through mergers. The industry has grown significantly over the years with more funds, increased assets, and improved regulations.
