Project to establish the South Park-East Raleigh Neighborhood Associations Preservation and Education Program. Its aim is to promote and preserve the presence and history of one of the oldest African-American communities in the country, one listed on the 1991 National Register of Historic Places. Former White House Photographer Sharon Farmer visited the NC State campus to give a lecture in Burns Auditorium on the same day, January 26, 2009, that her former subject Former President Bill Clinton was here to give a Millennium Seminar Harrelson Lecture in Reynolds Coliseum. Nearly 30 photographs of Farmers work were on exhibit in the Brooks Hall Gallery from January 26 to February 8, 2009. graduate students from the School of Architecture at NC State University, as part of a fall semester advanced architectural design studio. The results were documented and provided to the city to assist their revitalization efforts in Southeast Raleigh. Student teams from Professor Georgia Bizios ARC590E Affordable Housing: Design Issues/ Community Actions hosted a project workshop on Friday, March 27, 2009. Community partners from the City of Rocky Mount, Durham Habitat for Humanity and Sanders Service Center of Duplin County joined Bizios and the class for a morning of design presentations and discussion. The video game completed by a collaboration of engineering and design students, led by Industrial Architecture. The biennial Thomas Jefferson Award recognizes excellence in architectural advocacy and achievement in three categories: private-sector architects, public-sector architects and public ofcials who manage or produce quality design. Master of Industrial Design Alumus Joe Harmon was highlighted in the Hickory Record for his Splinter car that was be featured as one of the breakthrough designs at the Food Lion Auto Fair at Lowes Motor Speedway in April 2009. Harmons wooden car received international attention on the Internet. Alumna Donna Moftt (BED 1974; MLA 1976) was recognized by the Greater Federation of Womens Clubs in 2009 as a Woman of Achievement.

Over 60 years have passed since the School of Design (now College of Design) was established in 1948 at NC State University. A rekindled spirit of innovation and design thinking among the design community resulted from the efforts to celebrate this special anniversary during the 2008-2009 academic year.

This annual report insert is provided to share some of the highlights of this very successful academic year and to entice you to read the full annual report online. Even when faced with ever-reducing budgets, the College of Design continues to be accomplished in excellence.
2009 College of Design Awards of Excellence Recipients; Sharon Farmer, former White House Photographer, spoke and had photo exhibition; Director of Professional Relations Jean Marie Livaudais at the Alumni Association's Evening of the Stars with Distinguished Alumni Recipient William "Bill" Valentine and his wife Jane; Famous artist and drawing instructor Glenn Vilppu gave a two-day workshop on gure drawing; Alumnus David Evans (BPDV 1984) held exhibition and gallery talk.

Award-winning photographer David Evans has captured images from around the world while on assignment for clients like National Geographic Society, Discovery Channel, China Foto Press, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. A 1984 graduate of NC States College of Design, Evans has worked in a variety of executive creative positions on three continents. Evans held an exhibition and gallery talk with students and the design community in November 2008. The Stones Warehouse Redevelopment Project was a research and design project conducted by

Design Assistant Professor Tim Buie and Computer Science Professor Dr. Michael Young, is available to teachers and students in N.C. middle schools as part of the celebration of Blackbeard. The game, now called Blackbeards Escape, was a big success during the video game showcase held at the end of the spring semester.

Moftt was one of 21 outstanding women selected for their signicant contributions to the state of North Carolina. Moft is currently the director of the N.C. Aquarium located at Fort Fisher, south of Kure Beach. Alumna Kim Tanzer (M.Arch. 1984) was appointed the Dean of the University of Virgina School of Architecture effective July 1, 2009. Dean Emeritus Claude E. McKinney passed away early in the morning of November 11, 2008, after a long struggle with a debilitating illness.

We also recognize the generosity of alumni and friends who gave to the college in 2008-09 on pages 35-36 of this magazine. Academic Programs
Design Studies, a non-studio based undergraduate degree program, accepts rst students to begin studies in Fall 2009. The First Year Student Advocate Award 2008-2009 was given to the College of Designs First Year Experience program. The College of Design received the Outstanding College Performance Award at the annual Freshman Honors Convocation held on Monday, January 26, 2009 in the Witherspoon Cinema. The College of Design has won this award more than any other college on campus and this marks the seventh consecutive years that Design has been recognized for excellence in support to students.

Industrial Design graduate student Matthew Gilbride won 2nd place at the New York International Auto Shows World Trafc Safety Symposium Design for Safety Competition; Industrial Design graduate students Michael Laut and Kathryn Asad won 3rd and 4th place, respectively. Under the direction of Associate Professor of Industrial Design Bong-il Jin, NC State students have placed in the safety competition for six consecutive year. Second-year graduate Industrial Design student Michael Rall was selected as one of three Grand Prize winners from the U.S. in LG Surfaces inaugural LG Surfaces and Beyond Student Design Challenge.

The oldest surviving artifact from the Raleigh Fire Department, dating to 1870, was returned to the city mid-November. Five graduate students in Art + Design, Graphic Design and Landscape Architecture presented at the 4th Annual Graduate Student Research Symposium on March 18 at the McKimmon Center. There were 159 poster presentations, representing 60 graduate programs and all colleges. Poster presentations were divided into seven broad academic categories, and faculty judges selected a rst and second place winner in each category.

Dean Marvin J. Malecha, FAIA, was sworn in as the 85th AIA President on December 5, 2008 at the new Foster & Partners-designed courtyard of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Malecha also received the EAAE/ARCC Haecker Leadership Award for Architectural Research at the 2008 EAAE/ARCC Conference held in Copenhagen. Adjunct Professor Rodney Swink (MLA 1977) received the 2008 LaGasse Medal during the

Professor of Landscape Architecture Art Rice, who is also the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies Research and Extension, received the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture Fellows medal. All good buildings begin with the land. That is the edict that informs every building Raleigh, NC-based architect Frank Harmon, FAIA, designs. It is also one of the key reasons his design of a green residence in Charleston, recently received one of the American Institute of Architects 17 Housing Awards for 2009.

The professional Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program underwent a re-accreditation visit (every 6 years) in which the program met or exceeded all the accreditation standards.

Students
Industrial Design graduate student Jessica Konawicz was one of two winners of the One Good Chair competition. Her entry, the Pandanus Chair is made from cellulose plastic that is renewable and biodegradable. It also has the ability to stack to maximize space when storing and shipping.

Second Place in the ImagiNations Design Competition was awarded to North Carolina State Universitys Mickeys Quest To Magma Mountain, a motion simulator thrill ride that features a circular seating arrangement for an immersive 360-degree, 3D experience. The four members of the North Carolina State University team are Steven Varela, Corban Prim, Ashley Wagner and Morgan McCormick. Alumni Memorial Bell Tower that currently uses electronic chimes. Architecture students Jordan Eure, Kyler McClure, Megan Miller and Jenny Williams from ARC 232: Introduction to Structures and Materials presented a design for a masonry unit in early August in Chicago at the National Concrete Masonry Association midyear meeting. Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), Landscapes Architects, are recipients of this years American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) General Design Honor Award for their design of the Boston Childrens Museum Plaza, Boston.
