Shrinking Mimsy’s Pumpkin Hat
Gauge= 4 stitches per inch on size 8- 16” circular needle
Needs: 2 to 4 oz worsted weight yarn, color orange; scrap of worsted weight yarn, color brown; 1 oz sock weight yarn, color leaf green; size 8 needles –
set of 5 double points; and one 16” circular; 2- size 2 or 3 double points; yarn needle.
Cast on 70 stitches on a size 8 circular needle for a child size hat, or 80 stitches for an adult hat. Place marker at beginning of round.
Pattern: Knit 9, purl 1 around
Continue until hat measures 4 ½ inches for child, 6 inches for adult, measured from bottom of curled edge. Begin decreases.
All decreases will occur between the purl furrows, to keep the pumpkin shaping intact:
Decrease row 1: SSK, knit to last 2 stitches before purl furrow, K2tog, repeat around
Decrease rows 2 & 3: Knit
Repeat these rows twice. After the first decrease there will be 7 stitches between purl furrows. Following the second repeat, there will be 5 stitches
between furrows. Change to size 8 double points as necessary.
Repeat decrease rows 1 & 2 twice. After the third decrease round there will be 3 stitches between furrows; after the fourth there will be 1 stitch between
furrows.
Break off orange yarn, leaving a 5 inch tail. With brown yarn, knit plain for 1 inch. Cast off.
