Recent Prior Experience: Students have little prior knowledge of the sacrament of Penance as these are the first lessons in the sequence of lessons on the sacrament.
Students have studied Penance in previous years and will have some basic knowledge. Students know researching techniques and have the ability to decode information
and retrieve important points. Students have previously used PowerPoint and Prezi. Students have knowledge of how to write scripts and simple acting techniques.
Students know of storytelling techniques.
Syllabus Outcome(s):
C3.2: explain how Word, symbol and

forgiveness. (Learning Indicator 1)
Lesson Five: Formal Formative Assessment:
Students are required to create a presentation
(e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi) that presents research

Assessment and Evaluation
LESSON 1
Students are able to link the sacrament
of Penance to the teachings of the bible.
Students will observe the story of 'The Lost
Sheep' being told by the teacher to
introduce the topic on Penance.

3 mins
4 mins
5 mins
T will have the Godly play equipment set up at the front of the
room.
T will inform Ss before they enter the room they need to be
silent and to sit on the floor in a circle. T gets a student to stand
at the door to let the other Ss in. T takes place at front with
Godly play equipment.
T tells story of 'The Lost Sheep' using equipment (see resources
page for script and printable storytelling equipment).
T asks the following 'I wonder' questions to get Ss thinking
about the meaning of the story:
I wonder have you ever lost anything that is important to
you.
I wonder what you felt like when you found it.
I wonder what Jesus wanted to teach the people by telling
this parable.
I wonder how we become lost.
I wonder how we are found.
T and Ss will discuss the image of the sheep and the shepherd
and how this relates to how God seeks out the lost and brings
them back.
In RE books Ss write about an experience of lost and found in
their own lives.
Teacher will informally assess students
when listening to students during the
discussion. This will assist the teacher in
gaining an insight into students'
understanding of the topic.
LESSON 2
Students are able to link the sacrament
of Penance to the teachings of the bible.
Students will be required to apply the
knowledge they have gained in previous
lessons about sin and forgiveness.
Students will need to apply their knowledge
of drama and writing scripts.
8 mins
32 mins
T will get Ss to sit on the floor ready for instruction.
T will review the themes of the parable of 'The Lost Sheep'
asking students the following questions:
What happened in the parable 'The Lost Sheep'?
Why do you think the farmer went looking for the sheep?
What does this teach us about forgiveness and Gods
love?
T will explain to Ss that in groups of three or four they will
design a short scene similar to 'The Lost Sheep'. The story
should be about a character who becomes lost and turns
away from the ones that love them and then realises their
wrongdoings and return for forgiveness. Ss are able to use
any of the storytelling resources in the room to assist them
or they can act it out. Ss are required to write a script
(examples of scripts and a script template will be provided to
assist students) and are encouraged to use stage directions
if acting it out or directions explaining where to move the
storytelling pieces.
T hands out script templates and advises students to look at
class website for examples (http://yearfived.weebly.com/).
T will break Ss into their pre-determined groups.
T will roam from group to group to assist Ss with any
questions they have and to help them to create their scene.
Ss will present their scenes during the next lesson.
Teacher will informally assess students
on their knowledge of forgiveness and
their collective ability to write a script.
LESSON 3
Students are able to link the sacrament
of Penance to the teachings of the bible.
Students apply their knowledge of acting to
present their scenes.
5 mins
20 mins
5 mins
T gathers students on the floor and informs Ss what order
they will be presenting their scenes.
Ss perform their scenes.
Whist Ss are performing T takes note of any misconceptions
that arise from the performances to review in future lessons.
T with Ss review the activity asking the following questions:
What do you think worked well?
What didn't work well?
What would you do differently next time?
What did you like about the activity?
What did this activity teach you about forgiveness and
reconciliation?
Informal Formative Assessment:
Teacher observes and writes notes
about any misconceptions that arise
from the performances. Teacher will
review these misconceptions in
upcoming lessons to assist students
learning.
LESSON 4
Students are able to explain the rituals
and symbols used in the celebration of
the sacrament of Penance.
Students are introduced to sin and the
sacrament of Penance. Students will have
to apply their own knowledge of sin and
forgiveness.
10 mins
5 mins
5 mins
5 mins
5 mins
T gives out worksheet 1 to Ss (see resources). Ss write a
sentence or two on what they think sin is and place words they
believe are linked to sin around the picture.
T asks Ss to gather on the floor.
T asks some Ss to explain their definition of sin. T reinforces
that sin is turning away or being lost from God. T links this with
the story of 'The Lost Sheep'.
T asks Ss if they know what forgiveness is. Ss brainstorm with T
writing on the whiteboard about different ways you can ask God
for forgiveness.
T introduces the topic of Penance as one of the seven
sacraments, and introduces the three rites of Reconciliation:
- First Rite of Reconciliation. This is an individual experience.
The penitent receives the sacrament privately with the priest.
- Second Rite of Reconciliation. This is experienced as a
community. We gather as a community and celebrate the
liturgy. We seek individual confession and absolution. This is
the most common rite we celebrate in schools.
- Third Rite of Reconciliation. This is a community experience
with communal absolution. It is rarely used.
T plays the following video for students to reinforce the topic of
Penance: http://vimeo.com/43611598
Teacher will informally assess students
by collecting the worksheet after they
have completed it. This will inform the
teacher of students knowledge of sin.
Teacher will informally assess students
during the discussion on forgiveness
and sin so that the teacher is aware of
students current knowledge.
LESSON 5
Students are able to explain the rituals
and symbols used in the celebration of
the sacrament of Penance.
Students will be required to apply the
knowledge they have learnt in previous
lessons.
Students will need to use their research
skills and IT skills to create their own
presentation.
3 mins
5 mins
12 mins
10 mins
T gathers students on the floor to introduce the task.
T reviews with Ss what they learnt last lesson on the sacrament
of Penance and the three rites of Reconciliation.
T introduces the different symbols of Reconciliation and brings
them up on the Interactive whiteboard. (Symbols: crossed keys,
stole, cross, raised hand).
T asks the following questions:
Why do you think these symbols are used?
What do you think the significance of these symbols are?
Are these symbols used in any other sacraments?
T brings rubric (see resources) up on the interactive white board
and explains the task to Ss. In pairs or groups of three Ss
research two symbols of Penance and their significance. Ss are
also required to identify and describe the similarities and
differences between the three rites of Reconciliation. This is to
be presented in a PowerPoint presentation or any similar
program or web 2.0 tool, e.g. Prezi.
T explains Ss will have the rest of this lesson, and two others to
finish the presentation.
T explains Ss can use the laptops for research or the books
around the classroom. T will direct Ss to the page on the class
website so they know which internet sites to use. (See page
'Penance presentation' on http://yearfived.weebly.com/).
T will inform Ss who they are working with, groups are
predetermined.
Ss begin work on the task.
T roams the room answering any questions and assisting Ss.
Formal Formative Assessment:
The task will be used to assess the
students understanding of the
sacrament of Penance. Students will be
provided with the marking rubric so that
they are aware of exactly what they are
being assessed on.
