Shouwuli L.I.-13: Arm Five Miles

Shouwuli (LI-13) is a point on the Large Intestine channel located on the upper arm. Needling it perpendicularly to a depth of 1 to 1.5 cun activates the channel and alleviates pain. It also alleviates coughing, regulates qi, drains dampness, and transforms phlegm. Shouwuli treats pain and numbness in the elbow and upper arm, cough, difficulty breathing, scrofula, and malaria. Combining it with other points such as Binao (LI-14) or moxa can effectively treat scrofula.

Arm Five Miles
LOCATION
On the lateral side of the upper arm, 3 cun
proximal to Quchi L.I.-11, on the line connect-
ing Quchi L.I.-11 with Jianyu L.I.-15.
LOCATION NOTE
i. Locate approximately one handbreadth superior to
Quchi L.I.-11, in the depression between the lateral border
of biceps brachii and the humerus; ii. Locate at one third
of the distance between Quchi L.I.-11 and the axillary fold.
NEEDLING
Perpendicular insertion 1 to 1.5 cun.
ACTIONS
Activates the channel and alleviates pain
Alleviates coughing
Regulates qi, drains damp and transforms phlegm
INDICATIONS
Pain, numbness or contraction of the elbow and
upper arm, inability to raise the arm, shoulder pain,
wind-taxation with fear and fright.
Cough, difficulty in breathing, vomiting blood.
Scrofula, desire to sleep, diminished qi, inability to
move the four limbs, yellow body with intermittent
low-grade fever, malaria, blurred vision, fullness and
distention below the Heart, fear and fright.

COMBINATIONS
Scrofula: Shouwuli L.I.-13 and Binao L.I.-14 (One
Hundred Symptoms).
Scrofula: moxa Shouwuli L.I.-13 and Renying ST-9
