The Big House in Kariba
Its been too long...
Welcome to our first edition of Kariwa in
2015, we hope that you are keeping well
and this newsletter is keeping you informed.
We also realise our newsletter was greatly
missed and to all our readers , we apologise for being away for so long. It is a brand
new year so we would like to assure you
that every month, our newsletter will be
waiting for you in your inbox. Now lets have
a look at what has been going on during our
absence.
Our biggest smile was on the 1st of August
when the national airline around 10 am ,
landed at Kariba airport, after a few years
of its absence. The MA 60 brought government ministers and dignitaries and also
went to Victoria Falls. This was the much

needed flight to Kariba and thus marked the
resumption of the milk run, or the triangle route,
Harare, Kariba and Falls back the same day.
Since then Air Zimbabwe has been religiously
flying every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday,
making it ideal for a weekender. Air Zimbabwe
has even opened an office here, at the heart of
our business centre Nyamhunga.
As if that was not enough, late during the year,
the luxury coach Eagle Liner launched its scheduled coach, which runs two buses, running everyday leaving Harare and Kariba at 8am , arriving around lunch and back the same day. The
buses stop at Banket, Chinhoyi CUT University,
Chicken Inn, Twin River Inn at Karoi, Makuti and
CBZ Kariba and finally at AMC Windsor buses.
Like Air Zim , our buses have proven to be reliable and on time everyday, giving everyone an
option of a hassle free journey.
The Big House is a thatched house situated in
Kariba, 5 minutes from the lake shore and close to
the main shopping area, hotels, super tube (for the
kids) and Human Watering Holes.
The area is tranquil and quiet with plenty of game
around, especially the Elephants and Zebras. Buffalos, Warthogs, Hippos and Impalas are some of
the other animals seen here. Lions have been
seen in the area but they are a little elusive!!!!
The house is nestled on top of a hill overlooking
the lake, with stunning views. There is a very large
open plan living room/dining room, air conditioned, a 42 flat screen TV, full DSTV and wireless
broadband. A large veranda leads off from the
living room with a lounge area and a dining table
for dining with a view .
There are 5 bedrooms, 4 are en suite and the 5th
(the kids room) has its own toilet right next door.
All are air conditioned, the main bedroom has a

A new face in Kariba
On the 1st of February we were honoured to
welcome into our ZTA Kariba family a new face,
which we hope and know will stay and love the
addictive Kariba, whose spell has bound a lot of
us.
Neddie Daisy Guvamombe comes in to fill the
vacant Marketing Executive post in our office.
Tourism Police Unit Re-launched by Paridzirai Mhuriro
Kariba District Police has been hard at work in their capacity all year round to
ensure tourism flourishes and Kariba becomes the safest destination in Zimbabwe. First came the Anti Poaching Unit launch sometime mid year , and they
have been working very hard with Matusadonha Anti-Poaching, Gache Gache
Anti-poaching units, and have made numerous arrests to fish poachers. Through
their efforts they even managed to catch cyanide poison poachers in the district
before they had poisoned water bodies. During the year they also managed to
hold a Anti-Domestic Violence Launch, ensuring that cases and issues of violence in the homes is reduced.
On the 12th of December we saw the launch of Tourism Police Unit at Cutty Sark
Hotel, and we must say Cutty Sark has been actively involved in a lot of community based projects this past year. We commend them for their efforts.
Daisy was born on 9 April 1989 in Chinhoyi. She
did her primary education at John Cowie and
Bindura Primary School. She did her secondary
education at St. Dominics and did her A Levels
at St Johns Emerald Hill in Harare. After her
schooling she went to South Africa doing marketing promotions.
The launch was in style with a procession around town announcing the return of
Tourism Police. After the procession, the Tourism Police Unit putting on their
bibs paraded before the invited guests and led the national anthem. Then the
formalities began with speeches from the Police hierarchy which paved way for
the Guest of Honour, who happened to be our resident Magistrate, His Worship
Mr Chourumwe.
Upon her return she began her studies with the
American Hotel and Lodging Association, and
acquired an International Diploma, at the same
time she was a Trainee Manager at Meikles Hotel. She graduated top of the class with honours,
also being named student of the year. This was
at a ceremony held on 4 July 2014, attended by
over 200 guests which she had organised.
During the same time she acquired A1 and A2
French Diplomas with Alliance Francaise, and
she is fully conversant in this language of love.
She also studied with the City and Guilds and
obtained Certificates in Customer Service and
Office Procedures and came out with First Class
Passes. She is also very fluent in sign language!
During her training at Meikles she also participated at the famous UNWTO Conference in Victoria Falls and also took part in the first ever Harare International Carnival. She was also part of
the team that gave back to the community by
participating in environmental clean up projects
under Meikles.
Daisy is currently pursuing a Degree in Marketing
Management. She loves travelling, reading, playing volleyball, and meeting new people.
We welcome her with both hands and hope that
she will enjoy or rather #LoveKariba.
In his speech he highlighted the achievements made by Kariba Police in terms
of making the destination safer and orderly. The timing of the re-launch was very
strategic with the coming in of Premier Football through the near success of ZPC
football club. Also the UNI-VISA between Zimbabwe and Zambia and the Kariba
South Expansion Program meant more tourists. Prioritising safety in our town
will then encourage tourism.
A couple of operators including Cutty Sark, Mystic Tours and Caribbea Bay exhibited at the launch.
With the formalities out of the way, the group boarded Zambezi Trader for their
lunch and cruised to Andora harbour. The cruise was amazing, but then again, a
cruise in the biggest boat in Zimbabwe has to be amazing! We were served
lunch and with tummies full some decided to work off excess energy on the
dance floor while others networked. At Andora we were picked up by the new
luxury coach Eagle Liner, now thats a bus one needs in Kariba. It felt like, well,
out of Kariba, cool and comfy. We were transported back to Cutty Sark where we
all dispersed to our various destinations.

Mayors Cheer Fund 2015
By
Paridzirai Mhuriro
Having been voted in by people, the next best thing
to do is look after their needs. It is a good tradition
that the town of Kariba came up with, The Mayors
Cheer Fund. This is to bring a little happiness to the
less privileged in the community. This year our
mayor was targeting the elderly for her Christmas
Cheer Fund.
A highly energetic committee led by Mr. Chihwai of
Cutty Sark was put together. This committee came
up with ways to raise funds and marketed the initiative everywhere from Charara through to Nyamhunga, and all the way to Mica Point. They endeavoured to ensure that all community stakeholders
who could chip in were informed about the cruise
which was on the 22nd of November and the dinner
on the 29th.
Their efforts paid off, the cruise yielded over 300.
The dinner held at Cutty Sark was one of the most
successful fundraising dinners ever held in Kariba.
With good food under their belts the business people then went on to donate in cash and kind towards the fund. Caribbea Bay offered a meal for the
orphans while Marineland thought a cruise would
be perfect fun for them as some of them would
never be able to afford it. All in all the Cheer Fund
came to $6 000 worth of donations.
All that in the fund went towards buying food hampers for the elderly. These included mealie meal
and other basics needed to ensure they are well fed
and clean. The distribution was on the 9th of January and the elderly danced with joy as they received
their after Christmas presents. Many thanks to
those who made these members of our community
happy.

cause its a whole new experience.
The whole place has been refurbished and revamped into this African luxury place. There are lash
green lawns, beautifully paved driveway, the clear blue waters in the
pool , blue contrasting with the dark
waters in the lake. Yes, one gets a
clear view of the lake from the ledge
of the lodge, its breath taking!!
The external design has a touch of
both Africa and the West, with the
thatch and neatly paved driveway.
The colours are neutral, sober and
classy helping the visitors imagination
to travel to a tranquil Africa with a soft
beating drum, and lions lazily lying on
kopjes while hippos sing in the lakes
as they keep a watchful eye at a half
asleep crocodile. Clean and shiny
slates used for tiling merge beautifully
with the bedding and their coolness is
welcome in Karibas extreme heat.
On the wall is a huge flat screen, so all
your favorite TV people can move in
with you. The beds are so comfy that
sleeping on them is a holiday. The
showers are a home away from home
which is essential. Considering the
heat, one needs a shower they look
forward to. Everything about Zimre
Lodge is a cool breeze and their prices
are reasonable. Whether its a family
holiday or business there is enough
room and facilities to accommodate
your needs.
