 “IVSSCEinstein: A story of timeless friendship”
It was as I was reflecting at the vagaries of life when the sun blew
away the blanket of darkness which has been disguising the room for what
felt like eternity. The rays drifted its way through an unknown corner.
There were series of scattered photographs, low quizzes in various subjects,
letters and piles of scratch papers but there were also certificates, an
invitation, a cap and a graduation robe... then the reality struck me in awe
and it took me a long time to realize, we were leaving.
Then in a split second, I found myself going down the memory lane,
looking back at the reminiscences as they flash like scenes unreeling from
a film: old yet still alive.
It was 4 years ago when a throng of dreamers paved their way to the
crowd and entered the gates of Ilocos Norte National High School. We were
freshies. Innocent we were, we didn’t know anything about algebra and
physics. We begin to cast our juvenile elementary days and started
scribbling tales into the new chapter of our lives, starting from the first
day of school, the saga of puppy loves, first loves and broken hearts, the
chronicles of silly catfights, the series of gossips, our first and last
record at the guidance office, the terror and cool teachers, our first
impression over someone, the memorable junior-senior promenades, the
friends who stayed and left down to the saddest but most awaited finale:
graduation day.
As we all know, we started as strangers. Ironic as it may seem, high
school looked like our first day in kindergarten, we sit in a room filled
with different looking strangers-shy, nervous and terrified. But in the
next few minutes, we play with them as if we’ve been friends for a long
time.
Days turned to weeks then months, now it’s been years, I learned to
dole out smiles to all of them which finally end up to friendship.
At the 4 monopolies of the Science Compound, stands out a group of
extraordinary savor, the IV Einstein. Where our history began, I really
don't know. All I remember is we bonded over lunch, fashion, ideas, politics,
books, gossips and our hatred over someone. Until we found ourselves telling
each other our darkest secrets, our day to day experiences and the deepest
details of our lives.
We comforted each other whenever in tears. We had always stood behind
to catch someone when he felt like falling. We have unparalleled wits in x
or y or theory of relativity or even alkenes and alkynes. We have bunch of
stories to tell. We're not perfect; we have our own hang-ups, disagreements,
misunderstandings, barriers and failures. We entered our classroom unsure,
and maybe even afraid. We didn't know what to expect, but we hoped that it
would turn out fine. We enjoyed the beauty of solitude and the simple
pleasures of life. We clung unto one another’s arms as we go on our way.
We are athletes, singers, artists and comedians. We are daughters,
sisters, sons, brothers, students and friends. We laughed and cried. We
spoke out. We loved, disliked, and showed indifference. We will be the next
Nobel Prize winner, best-selling author, life-saving surgeon, president, or
beloved teacher. We have the determination and self-discipline to see every
goal surpassed. We will go to college not just to party and have fun, but to
pull ourselves one step closer to the destination we so greatly desire. We
have lofty dreams and the ambition to make them reality.
And yes, our lives our made, in tears wept and shared, the angst
fueled and calmed, the storms that have brought ourselves, in these small
hours, these little wonders, these twists and turns of fate….
No one thinks of leaving in first year. It's always about beginnings.
People tell you what to look forward to, and you start to get excited. Then,
we learned that there’s such a word as curfew. We fought with our friends
over stupid matters. We were reprimanded by our teachers for being absent,
for being late, for being noisy and rowdy, for not cleaning the room and for
not using the proper uniform. We felt great when there’s a typhoon for
classes are automatically suspended. We learned to burn midnight oils
studying for the next day and at the same time cheat during exams. We
spent the remaining hours with friends instead of going home. We broke and
set rules. We pretended that we were doing our thesis though the fact is we
were viewing someone’s profile using our Friendster account. But the bottom
line is, we had the time of our lives. We learned from our experiences and
we were made stronger by the storms that passed us by.
 Then we realize that goodbyes are always difficult. But memories made
with friend - beautiful, happy, and even sad memories; the best and the
worst - soften the blow. And when tomorrow comes, when one is down and out,
when you feel as though there is nothing left to hold onto, these memories
can very well save you. Because we made those memories in INNHS. The INNHS
was the vase where the flowers of friendship of the IV SSC Einstein learned
to bloom.
We’ll all live the lives we want or rather what our parents want. But
someday, we’ll see each other again, in this same old place. We have sang the
finale of our song but it’s not yet the ending of our friendship, it is still
the genesis of what we started in this same, old, familiar place where I
used to find myself erratic before—INNHS.
Here’s to goodbye, tomorrow's gonna come too soon. Here’s to the A’s and
red marks on our report cards. Here’s to the “could haves” and “would haves”.
Here’s to the food trips. Here’s to the shared secrets, answers and laughter.
Here’s to the coke floats and pizza. Here’s to exorcism. Here’s to the travels
and music. Here’s to the victories and defeats. Here’s to the picture taking
and tears. Here’s to the mundane and best memories shared for years. Here’s
to our story... one of the greatest stories ever told...
A loud clattering sound took over the room and I realized that I was
merely hallucinating. My gaze was glued at the window where a note was
left “As you leave the portals of high school, remember the lessons you have
learned, the teachers who have been with you along the way, the friends who
stood by you, the strength that sadness gave you and the gift of happiness
that made the person you are today. You’ll make the perfect step out into the
imperfect world; people will hurt you, people will betray you, challenges
will slow you down, but you’ll always have a home with us.”
I searched for the name of the author and below the message, was a
small, tiny scribble “from alma mater”.
I smiled.

A SLICE OF HER PERSONALITY: The last thing she knows is
she was reading this book in a rainy night in the midst
of October. Trust me, it’s not the kind of book you
would read in a scenario like this but she had no
choice. It’s the only book in the closet. The author
started her story talking about the portrayal of people
when they see her. She has this round shaped face with a
short hair. She was a wire eater. The she continued
telling about her life, though at those kinds of topics,
the reader would rather choose to talk to her younger
brother the same way she had one too. Then she came at
this line: “I’m lost when I began to describe my self
more than the usual thing I know. I’m just a simple one
despite the fact that life is complicated. I have
friends who taught me to appreciate what I have. I’m not
a helpless youth. I encompass with a loving family. I’m
not chemically deficient, I have a crush. I have gone
different kinds of situation.” It’s so weird they have
similarities. She also posses what she do have and do
believe in. It’s so ironical. She began to get livid,
does she have a twin? Then to her angriness, she closed
the book and began to write. Again it was so bizarre;
she was doing the same thing and so she looked at the
moonless sky, they had the same star, they had the same
name, and she wasn’t her twin. She was her soul. The
girl was the same “Merelle” she sees every time she face
the mirror.
