AbouttheNEIC
TheNationalEarthquakeInformationCenter(NEIC),wasestablishedinRockville,Maryland,in1966aspartoftheNationalOcean
SurveyoftheDepartmentofCommerce.TheCoastandGeodeticSurvey,aforerunneroftheNationalOceanSurvey,hadcoordinated
thecollectionofseismologicaldataintheUnitedStatesformanyyears.TheNEICwastransferredtoBoulder,Colorado,in1972and
madepartoftheU.S.GeologicalSurveyin1973.TheNEICwasmovedagainin1974toitspresentlocationinGolden,Colorado.
TheNationalEarthquakeInformationCenter(NEIC),apartoftheDepartmentoftheInterior,U.S.GeologicalSurvey,islocatedin
Golden,Colorado,10mileswestofDenver.TheNEIChasthreemainmissions.First,theNEICdetermines,asrapidlyandas
accuratelyaspossible,thelocationandsizeofallsignificantearthquakesthatoccurworldwide.TheNEICdisseminatesthis
informationimmediatelytoconcernednationalandinternationalagencies,scientists,criticalfacilities,andthegeneralpublic.Second,

publicanextensiveseismicdatabasethatservesasa
solidfoundationforscientificresearch,principallythrough
theoperationofmoderndigitalnationalandglobal
seismographnetworksandthroughcooperative
internationalagreements.TheNEICisthenationaldata
centerandarchiveforearthquakeinformation.Third,the
NEICpursuesanactiveresearchprogramtoimproveits
abilitytolocateearthquakesandtounderstandthe
earthquakemechanism.Theseeffortsareallaimedat
mitigatingtherisksofearthquakestomankindandthey
aremadepossiblebythefineinternationalcooperation
thathaslongcharacterizedthescienceofseismology.

TheNEICoperatesa24houradayservicetodeterminethelocationandmagnitudeofsignificantearthquakesintheUnitedStatesand
aroundtheworldasrapidlyandaccuratelyaspossible.Thisinformationiscommunicatedtofederalandstategovernmentagencies
whoareresponsibleforemergencyresponse,togovernmentpublicinformationchannels,tonationalandinternationalnewsmedia,to
scientificgroups(includinggroupsplanningaftershockstudies),andtoprivatecitizenswhorequestinformation.Whenadamaging
earthquakeoccursinaforeigncountry,theearthquakeinformationispassedtothestaffsoftheAmericanembassiesandconsulates
intheaffectedcountriesandtotheUnitedNationsDepartmentofHumanitarianAffairs(DHA).TheNEICissuesrapidreportsforthose
earthquakeswithmagnitudesatleast3.0intheeasternUnitedStates,3.0inthewesternUnitedStates,or5.0(orareknowntohave
causeddamage)anywhereelseintheworld.Atthepresenttime,theNEICstafflocatesandpublishesapproximately30,000
earthquakesonayearlybasis.Thesearethemostimportantofthemanymillionearthquakeswhichareestimatedtooccureachyear.
TheNEICcollectsdatathroughtheoperationofnationalandglobalnetworks,andthroughcooperativeagreements.Toenablethe
detectionandlocationofallfeltearthquakeswiththeU.S.,theNEICactsastheNationalOperationsCenteroftheAdvancedNational
SeismicSystem(ANSS),acooperativeventurebetweentheNEICandtheoperatorsoftheregionalseismicnetworksacrossthe
UnitedStates.TheNEICalsoreliesonthecooperationofavarietyofseismicreportingnetworksthroughouttheworldtogatherdata.

TheNEICalsocollectsnoninstrumentalreportsoftheeffectsofearthquakesonpeopleandmanmadestructuresandprepares
isoseismalmapsshowingthedistributionofintensitiesinwidelyfeltordamagingshocks.
ThedatathatarecollectedbytheNEICarepublishedinavarietyofformatsandpublicationsandareavailableelectronicallyviathe
Internet.The"QuickEpicenterDeterminations"(QED),averypreliminarylistofearthquakes,iscomputeddaily.The"Preliminary
DeterminationofEpicenters"(PDE)ispublishedweeklyandmonthly.The"EarthquakeDataReport"(EDR),alsoamonthlypublication,
providesadditionalandmoredetailedinformation,mainlyfortheuseofseismologists.
AwiderangeofresearchisalsoconductedattheNEIC.InvestigationsrangefromresolvingtheinternalstructureoftheEarthand
understandingthemechanicsofearthquakerupturethroughrapidassessmentofanearthquake'simpact.Theseresearcheffortsare
intendedtoimprovethedataserviceprovidedbytheNEICtothescientificcommunityandthegeneralpublicand,ultimately,toaidin
earthquakehazardmitigation.
