Women's Struggles in Patriarchal Society

Nawal El Saadawi describes her traumatic experience being circumcised as a young girl in Egypt in the 1930s. She recalls being taken from her bed by several people, including her mother, and having her clitoris cut off without anesthesia. She witnessed her younger sister then undergo the same procedure. Female circumcision was a widespread cultural practice at the time across social classes in Egypt, though education has led more parents to abandon the tradition. As a medical doctor, El Saadawi treated many girls who suffered infections and complications from the dangerous procedures, and believes it causes lasting psychological and sexual impacts. The document provides important historical and cultural context about the practice of female genital mutilation.
