Divergent

Divergent is the debut novel of American novelist Veronica Roth. The novel is first of
the Divergent triology,a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in the Divergent Universe.
This work is based on a post-apocalyptic Chicago,Roth indicated that she did not
originally intend to use Chicago as a setting: I wrote the rough draft and I felt like it needed a
more grounded sense of place,and I looked at the city I had described,which is all these trains
constantly moving,and its lake marsh,and these rivers. And I realised that it was Chigaco
already,and it was just because thats the city Ive known and loved the longest
The story begins with describing the society,societys survivors are divided into five
factions: Abnegation-for those who are selfless, Amity-for those who love peace, Condor-for
those who are honest, Dauntless-for those who are brave and Erudite-for those who are
intellectual. Each year all sixteen-years-old teenagers attend a ceremony in which they decide
whether they remain in the faction that their family are,or they chose to follow their own path.
His ceremony is after an aptitude test where every teenager recives a results that describes
which faction is the best suited for him. Those who do not complete de initiation into their
new faction,become Factionless and they are forced to live outside of the society,in poverty.
Our main heroine Beatrice Prior is born in a Abnegation family but she doesnt seem
to be comfortable with it because she doesnt feel selfless. At her aptitude test she finds out
that she is fitted for three factions: Erudite,Dauntless and Abnegation which is a taboo in their
society and that ,makes her a Divergent ,her test proctor warns her never tell anyone
because shell be in danger. At the Choosing Day,Beatrice choses to leave Abnegation and
joins Dauntless. Her brother also choses to leave Abnegation and joins Erudite.
The Dauntless are he only ones who give a initiation test and the top ten people will
become oficially Dauntless. Tris lacks physical strenght and the ability to use guns and fight
hand-to-hand combat. But Four (the Dauntless trainer) is helping her o become better in this
things. Between Four and Beatrice,who calls herself Tris now,the love makes her way in. Tris
passes with the help of Four all 3 satages of initiation. But something very strange
happens,the Erudite leader and he Dauntless leader are ploting something very evil. They are
plotting to use the Dauntless as soliders to start a civil war and attack the Abnegation,who are
in change of society good fonction. So all Dauntless are vaccinated with a serum that they do
not know about it,hey think that is a normal vaccine. Things are becoming really bad,The
Dauntless are some kind of aleep-walking soliders,Tris and Four are not affected by the serum
because they are Divergent,and thet decide to ge and save Abnegation because theirs families
are there. In the mean time Tris finds out that Four is actually Tobias a former member of
Abnegation faction,but he left because his father was physically abusing him. In their try to
save Abnegation Tris is shotted and gets wonded and Tobias gets injected with a serum special
for Divergents. Will they succed to save Abnegation? Will they succes to save their famillies?
You should defintly read this book because is pretty intense and combines S.F. with
romance and action. It is a well written book who makes you to stay and read for hours
imaginating as you would be right in the middle of the action,living it.
