How to Discard Your
Christmas Tree
Still need to get rid of your
Christmas tree? The Department of Sanitation and the
Parks Department are here
to help.
DSNY is holding curbside
pickups of discarded Christmas tree until Friday, January 15. Be sure to remove all
tree stands, tinsel, lights and
ornaments from trees before they are put out for collection. Clean, non-bagged
Christmas trees that left on
the curb between now and
January 15 will be chipped,
mixed with leaves, and recycled into rich compost for
the citys parks, institutions,
and community gardens.
The Department of Sanitation collected more than
213,000 Christmas trees for
tree-cycling after Christmas 2014. Recycling gives
Christmas trees new life,
Commissioner Kathryn Gar-
cia said. The tree in our
homes now will be chipped
and reused as mulch in
parks and community gardens throughout the city and
enjoyed for the months to
come.
The Parks Department is
also holding a collection and
special event called MulchFest. MulchFest will be held
Saturday and Sunday, January 9 and 10, 2016 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. at 30 chipping
sites. NYC Parks 48 drop-off
sites will be accepting trees
through January 10. All of
the Rockaway locations are
drop-off sites only. You can
drop off your trees at the
old Neponsit Nursing Home
parking lot near Beach 149th
Street, Beach 94th Street and
Shore Front Parkway or the
parking lot at Beach 11th
Street. All lights, ornaments,
decorations and netting

must be removed from trees
prior to drop-off. The trees
will be chipped and turned
into mulch at the events.
Those who attend a MulchFest event can have their tree
chipped and can take home
their own bag of mulch. The
nearest chipping locations
will be at Marine Park (East
33rd and Avenue U), Forest
Park (Forest Park Drive and
Woodhaven Boulevard) and
Brookville Park (Brookville
Boulevard / Caney Road /
144th Avenue). Bring your
tree to one of these locations
between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
on January 9 or 10, to have
your tree chipped and receive mulch.

Christmas tree collection and
recycling or MulchFest, visit

The widow of an NYPD officer
killed in the line of duty and her
organization are holding a Law
Enforcement Appreciation DAY
(LEAD) on Saturday, January 9.
Leslyn Stewart, whose husband
Dillon Stewart was shot while
attempting to pull over a car in
November 2005, is president of
the New York City chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS), a
nonprofit supporting the families
of fallen police officers. COPS is
asking for the public to show their
support for all law enforcement
personnel in a variety of ways,
including flying blue ribbons on
cars and mailboxes, wearing blue
clothing, shining blue light bulbs,
making thank you cards for local
precincts, and simply thanking a
police officer if you see them.
LEAD T-shirts and pins are available on the organizations website copsshop.com. The NYPDs
Community Affairs Bureau is promoting the day of appreciation by
sending out flyers and sharing information on social media.

ROAD BLOCK
Stretch Of BCD Closed Until ???
By Dylan Watton
Rockaway motorists got a New
Years surprise on Thursday, December 31 as a significant stretch
of Beach Channel Drive was
closed to all traffic due to imminently perilous road conditions.
Bright orange barrels sectioned
off the east-west thoroughfare
from Beach 108th Street to the
western terminus of the Rockaway Freeway, next to the Mobil
station. A Department of Transportation (DOT) press release
showed a diagram of the closure
and said that the agency has cre-
for the company said. The work
being performed includes installation of a barrier wall on the adjacent parcel along Beach Channel Drive. The company is aware
of the road closure and is coordinating closely with NYC DOT as
they evaluate the condition of the
roadway. More information for
that site can be found at http://
rockawayparkmgpsite.com/.
DECs role at this site is oversight of the remedial work, a
DEC spokesperson said. This
installation [of the barrier] was
initiated after the city installed
