head injury in a soccer game. However, Bocelli is a man of incredible optimism. He never
lost the will and never left music.
Bocelli was born to Alessandro and Edi Bocelli, even though they were advised to abort
him. He has said that his mother's decision to give birth to him and overrule the doctor's
advice was the inspiration for him to hold a pro-life view towards abortion.
They lived on the family farm, selling farm machinery and making wine in the small village
of La Sterza, Lajatico, Tuscany, Italy, about 40 km south of Pisa. Bocelli's mother and his
younger brother Alberto still live in the family home. Bocelli's father died in 2000.
As a young boy, Bocelli showed a great passion for music. At the age of six, he started
piano lessons, and later learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar and
drums. Then, when his nanny, Oriana, gave him the first record of Franco Corelli, he
realized that pursuing the career of a tenor was his destiny.
Bocelli gave his first concert in a small village not far from where he was born. At the age of
14, he won his first song competition, with O sole mio. After finishing high school in 1980,
he studied law at the University of Pisa. He graduated from law school and worked one
year as a lawyer.
Bocelli met his first wife, Enrica Cenzatti, while he was singing at piano bars early in his
career. They got married in 1992, and they had two children, Amos and Matteo. The couple
got divorced in 2002.
At first, he was an instrumental musician and suddenly came a magical voice.
Thus, almost without knowing the great potential that had his voice, he started his career in
1992 with the help of Luciano Pavarotti, who heard a tape recording of him and Pavarotti
was very impressed. After that, Pavarotti led to Andrea performing alongside the Italian rock
star Zucchero Sugar Fornaciari on his European tour. Public acceptance was such that only
a year after his recording career began and soon shot to fame with pieces of opera and
popular music.
