HR Colloquium
Dr. M Nellaiappan, Mr. K.S. Jamstein, Prof. J Philip and Mr. Sudheesh Venkatesh, President, NHRD Bangalore Chapter
Reiterating its continuous contribution to the HR
arena in the country, XIME organised a National
Colloquium on HR: The Road Ahead on 28 September
2013 in association with NHRD Bangalore Chapter.
The Chief Guest of this intellectually stimulating
programme was Mr. K.S.Jamstein, Director HR,
ONGC. The colloquium saw twenty two distinguished
speakers from leading industries discussing the
challenges and direction of HR in this decade through
a Delphi approach.
Dr. M Nellaiappan, Director XIME welcomed the
dignitaries and delegates to the Colloquium. Inaugural
session of the Colloquium was chaired by Prof J Philip,
President XIME. During this session Mr. Sudheesh
Mr. K.S. Jamstein, Director HR, ONGC
inaugurating the HR Colloquium
Venkatesh, CPO, Azim Premji University and
President, NHRD Bangalore Chapter spoke on the
NHRD perspective.
The first session was initiated by Mr. N V Balachander,
ED (HR), Ashok Leyland. Other speakers of this
session were Mr. C. Mahalingam, Executive coach
and HR Advisor, Mr. Deenadayalan S., Founder
of Centre for Excellence in Organization and Mr.
Rajeev Nambiar, Senior Director-HR, DHL Global
Forwarding. They emphasized that the main purpose
of this Colloquium is gathering perspectives from
IT sector, manufacturing sector and logistics space.
Future HR managers should be able to differentiate
between standardization and customizing.

Arjmand, former senior partner, Accenture Ltd., and
board member of First Community Bank of Naperville,
USA. He was joined by Mr. Rajanarayan, Sr. VP &
CHRO, Titan Industries, Dr. Pallab Bandyopadhyay,
Director HR, Citrix India, Mr. Siddharth S.N, CPO,
Cloudnine Healthcare and Mr. Srihari Udupa, ED,
Nettur Technical Training Foundation. They touched
upon efficiency in career, implications of regimentation

Lifestyle at Reliance Retail Ltd addressed the gathering
by providing a CEO perspective on Human Resources.
During the next session Prof. Mathew Manimala,
IIM-B, opened the floor for a discussion on Talent
Management and the need for diversity in an
organisation. Ms. Nirmala Menon, Founder and CEO,
Interweave Consulting Pvt. Ltd and Dr. Arjmand joined

Mr. Rajanarayan chaired the last panel in which
Mr. Wilson Y R, President Corporate HR, Himatsinka
Seide Ltd and Mr. J M Prasad, Chief- HR, ING Vysya
Bank Ltd were the other experts. This panel deliberated
on specifics of an empowered work force.
Mr. Deenadayalan in his summing up remarks said
that HR has an important role in any organization in
building its people for excellent performance.

Maria Philip Debate

The Maria Philip Debate Competition was held with
great vigor and enthusiasm on 5 October, 2013. This
prestigious B-School debate competition is held in
memory of Maria Philip, daughter of Prof. J Philip,
President XIME. Maria was a great orator and debater
during her college days at Jesus and Mary College,
Delhi.
The chief guest for the occasion was Mr.
K.Vaidyanath, Non-Executive Director, ITC Ltd.
Participants were judged by a panel of judges
comprising Ms.Ganga Ganapathi, Vice-President,
Ogilvy & Mather Advertising, Mr.Karthik Iyer,
CEO-India Operations, Happy Creative Service,
Mr. Subrahmanium Chittur, CEO Giri Textiles Pvt
Ltd and Mr. Burzeen Vakil, Deputy GM at IBM
Systems and Technology Group.
Teams from top B-Schools in Karnataka including
IIM Bangalore, TAPMI, Christ University, Mount
Carmel and St. Josephs joined this fierce war of words.
Each team consisted of two members with at least
one girl in the team.
The topic for this years edition of the debate was
The National Food Security Act will cause more
harm than good to the countrys economy. Debaters
presented strong and relevant points of view in
support and against the motion. At the end of this
closely fought debate, winners trophy and cash award
of Rs 15,000 were presented to IIM-Bangalore.
St. Josephs College was declared runner up and
was presented a cash award of Rs 10,000.

Walkathon 2013
The XIME fraternity was at its best spirits physically
and mentally when XSeed, the social activity club
of XIME organized a walkathon on November 24th
2013. The main sponsor for the event was Union
Bank of India. Media partner was The Hindu. The
Event Sponsors were Handloom World and VLCC.
Better employment opportunities for the disabled
was the noble purpose behind this Walkathon. In
fine tune with this theme, the event was organised
in association with Enable India, a leading NGO
empowering disabled people to be employable.

Unlike any typical Walkathon, this event saw the
fighting spirit of twenty disabled people who joined
the participants with their wheel chairs and crutches.
This was indeed a real inspiration for all.

On 14th November, 2013 XSeed invited students
XSeed in association with St. Johns Medical
public speaking and games were conducted for
the group of forty children. The best student was
presented with the Sujith Valsalan Memorial
Scholarship of Rs. 10,000/-
donated blood on that day. It was held from 10.30
am to 5.00 pm.

day at XIME. Various activities like Poster making,
College Hospital organized a mass Blood Donation
drive on 11th October, 2013. Around 80 students
St. Xaviers Day Celebrations
St. Xaviers day was celebrated at XIME on 3
December. The day began with a solemn mass
by Rev. Fr. Ronnie Prabhu S J, Former Rector of
St. Josephs College. Fr. Prabhu inspired the
congregation through his very thoughtful
sermon. The mass was followed by community
breakfast at the central lawns. Entire XIME
family joined
this celebration to remember
the patron saint of Xavier Institutions,
St. Francis Xavier.

Eduniversal World Convention
Eduniversal World Convention was held this year
in IIM-B on 9 - 12 October 2013. Prof. J. Philip,
the President of XIME was one of the speakers at
this international educators meet.
During this convention Deans,
Directors,
Business Educators, and Professionals in the field
of Education interacted and exchanged views on
the impact of education on business, government
and society.
It was a happy moment for the Institute when
the delegates of Eduniversal who represented
various countries visited XIME Bangalore on 12
October. The President Prof. J Philip addressed
the gathering of nearly one hundred foreign
delegates, staff and students. The Sr. Dean, Prof.
S.D. Tyagaraj presented briefly on the Mission and
Vision of XIME. He also highlighted the institutes
remarkable journey and its achievements.

presented by the students conveying unique
cultural shades of the country. The delegates gave
a standing ovation to the performers and the hall
echoed with applause.

Dr. Hindupur Ramakrishna and Ms. Angie Bynon
along with six students of University of Redlands,
USA visited XIME in the first week of December
2013. President Prof. J Philip welcomed them and

led discussions on enhanced exchange programmes
between XIME and University of Redlands. The
visiting team had interactive sessions with faculty and
students as well.

Industry Visits
TaeguTec
The students of XIME were taken for an industry
visit to TaeguTec a manufacturing company in
Bopanahara, Bangalore. TaeguTec is into the
manufacture of industrial cutting equipments. Mr.
John Ben, Assistant Professor accompanied the
students. The students were shown a 20 minute
video about TaeguTec and its products. They were
taken in two groups and shown around the factory.
The various processes and stages of production were
explained and demonstrated by the staff.
BEML
XIME organized another industry visit to Bharat
Earth Movers Limited (BEML), KGF
F Complex,
on 19 October 2013. Faculty members Dr. Sumathi
Annamalai and Ms.Neena PC accompanied the
Students at BEML
students. BEML is one of the Miniratna Companies,
well known for Excavators, Dozers and Rail and
Metro coaches. During this visit the students had
a good exposure to various functions carried out in
R & D, Production and Operations department. The
industrial visit was an enriching experience for the
students.
National Education Day
On 11 November, 2013 XIME celebrated National
Education Day. This day is dedicated to the
memory of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Indias first
education minister, who was a great educationist
and scholar. The Chief Guest for the day was Dr.
J. Alexander, IAS (Retd.)former Chief Secretary
and former Cabinet Minister, Government of
Karnataka. To commemorate this day XIME
organised an elocution competition on the topic
Foreign Universities should be welcomed in India

ABBS Biennial Conference 2013 - Shanghai
XIME representatives at the Conference
The Biennial Conference of the Association of
BRICS Business Schools(ABBS), Management
Education International Forum and the 5th BRICS
Students Meet were held from 25-27 October
2013 in Shanghai, China. The organisers were:
Shanghai University of International Business and
Economics(SUIBE) and ABBS. President Prof.
J Philip, Prof CP Ravindranathan, Director Dr. M
Nellaiappan and seven students represented XIME
in this conference.
Prof J Philip is also the founding President of
this prestigious international association. In this
conference, Prof Philip and Prof C P Ravindranathan
presented a paper titled Business Education in Asia
Pacific
Akshay Ajay Joshi, Nanditha V Prabhu, Sourrendere
Amudha, Nayana Saha and Vamshi Krishna of XIME
Bangalore, Hariharan Ramanathan & Deekshita
Ramesh of XIME Kochi were the seven students who
represented XIME. The students meet had multiple
interactive sessions like debates, discussions, quizzes,
workshops and cultural shows. It was indeed a real
enriching experience for the diverse group of students
and faculty.

Two students from XIME Paromita Banerjee
and Roshan John participated in the finals of the
Management fest conducted by CMS B-School, Jain
University and were crowned the overall champions
of the event. The final round of the fest was conducted
on the cruise liner, Costa Victoria which set sail from
Singapore on 15th November. The awards were given
away by Paolo Viscafe, the Captain of Costa Victoria.

Lt. Gen. Sampath Kumar
There was a guest lecture on 6 September by
Retd. Lt. Gen. Sampath Kumar. He addressed the
gathering regarding the four most important aspects
of life which are Happiness, Attitude, Leadership
and Success. He also said that CSR activities are
very essential to the upliftment of our country . He
concluded by saying that collectivism is the key to
success.

On 18 October 2013 Mr. Melvin DSouza, MD,
NOVONORDISK Healthcare was at XIME to
share his thoughts on achieving managerial success.
He touched up on topics like general business,
leadership, success and making the best of the
economic downturn.
Mr. Muralikrishnan G
On 22 November 2013, the COO of Sasken,
Mr. Muralikrishnan addressed the students of
XIME regarding present needs of the Industry from
Management Graduates. He advised the students
to focus on habits like setting realistic expectations,
developing curiosity and questioning capabilities,
understanding politics, power and influence and
most importantly being ethical in all their decisions
and actions.

On 11th September 2013 Dr. Kevin Sludds, CSR
Associate from Ireland addressed XIME students on
the topic CSR-Industry Perspectives
Mr. Phil Bedford
The students of XIME, Bangalore attended a lecture on
Referral Marketing on 21 November 2013. The lecture
was given by Mr. Phil Bedford, who is a master trainer
at the Referral Institute, an international referral training
and consulting company with branches across the globe.

On 16 October, Mr.Maniranjan Kumar, alumni
INSEAD, Fontainbleau, France, addressed students of
Batch 18 on the topic Introduction to hedge funds.

On 5 December 2013, Dr. Mellissa Wiseman, an
Economics professor from the Houston Baptist University
addressed the students on the topic of Precursor to the
Great Recession and threw some light on the chain of
events that triggered the 2008 financial crisis in the United
States.

Alumni Meet
The annual alumni meet of the Institute was held on
16 November 2013. Alumni from all the previous
seventeen batches actively participated in the meet
evoking nostalgia among one and all present. The
Senior Dean Prof. S.D. Tyagaraj welcomed the

as the Secretary. The joy of the event was further enhanced
by the cultural event organized by the students. The alumni
were treated to a sumptuous dinner thereafter which
gave them time to catch up with each other and revisit
the golden memories of which they were all a part of. The

interact with the alumni and build greater bonds for all

Club Activities
Empresario
Empresario The Entrepreneurship Club of
XIME was inaugurated on 19th August, 2013. Mr.
Siddharth Krishna Kumar, Chairman, CII Young
Indians Bangalore Chapter, graced the occasion. The
first event of the club was also conducted on the same
day. The winners of this event held on logo and tag
line for the club were: Aashik Francis and Anupum
Mirror Me was the next event of Empresario. The
participants were gauged on their general awareness,
and on their lateral thinking and knack of tackling
a real time business situation. The winner were
Nirupama Javarayappa and Prithvi Ambati.
A total of 34 teams took part and the winners were
Anthony Raj and Ayesha Hazel and in second
place was Vijay and Sundar Raj. Industry Barons,
was a spinoff of the popular game Monopoly,
in which students skills in negotiation and money
management were tested. The team of Manjula P
and Muthukumaran and the team of Subhendra
Nath Mohanty and Subhashish Baruah emerged
the winners. The finance club also conducted talks
by eminent people from the industry.
HRuday
HRuday organized events like Recruiter, A Day in the
Street Smart was a three level event, focussed on the Life of HR, Treasure Hunt and Theatrix. Recruiter
abilities of the participants to think on their feet and was a poster making competition. The winners were

The event called Dream Merger involved teams
merging two completely opposite companies to
come up with a completely new product offering
in which over 140 students took part. The winners
were Akshay Ajay Joshi, Arvind Krishnan, Arvind J,
Tinu Kalra, Swastik Das and Suryaneel Das. In
the event Lock Stock Negotiate, teams were given
an opportunity to understand the stock market.

Govind from Batch 19. Treasure Hunt saw huge
participation involving 35 teams. The winners were
Team Eagles comprising Shagun, Khyati & Harshita
from Batch 18. Theatrix was conducted to educate
the juniors about Role Play. The winners were Team
3 comprising of Jennie George, Prerna Keshan and
Nipun Kunaboina from Batch 19.

XIME in collaboration with Joy of Giving Week
and Namma Bengaluru Foundation hosted a grand
event this year called ICONnect, a unique event that
promised to offer all students and young professionals
a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shadow their
business icons for an entire day.
This event was earlier hosted by IIM-B and ISB
Hyderabad. This year it was the turn of XIME. As
part of the event, any individual could bid for their
favourite corporate tycoon from amongst 11 business
leaders of top-notch companies like Biocon, Redbus, J
W Marriott, Thomson Reuters and Mindtree, to name
a few. The bidding took place during the Joy of Giving

Week i.e. from 2nd to 8th October, at the end of
which the highest bidders were announced.
The winners were then to spend an entire day with
the business leader of their choice, as per the terms
and conditions specified by the respective leader. The
amount raised through the bidding process along with
an equivalent or double the amount contributed by
the concerned leader was to be further channelized to
the NGO of the leaders choice via the Joy of Giving
Week. The event achieved a successful completion
with the support of various sponsors like Caf Coffee
Day, VLCC, Health Zingo and Indigo 91.9 fm

The President attended the Karnataka Association
of Autonomous B Schools (KAABS) meeting on 27,
September in Bangalore. He delivered a talk at the
Eduniversal World Convention at IIM-B on 9th October
2013. On 15th October Dr. Sanjiv Jaggia and Prof. Beena
Khurana of Cal Poly University visited XIME and held
discussions with the President.
President took leadership sessions for the Management
Faculty of Sambhram Group of Institutions on 22,
October. On 19 November President attended the
PGDM Association meeting held at the Oberoi hotel.
On 27 November President attended and spoke at the
third Annual MBA Universe.com Directors Round Table
Meeting at IIM-B.
PGDM Schools form Association
The PGDM schools finally have their own voice in the form of
a new association styled as Indian Association of Autonomous
Business Schools (IAABS) at a time when its looks that the All
India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is not directly
involved in the regulation of Management Schools following
a recent Supreme Court ruling declaring MBA education is
not technical and therefore cannot come under the purview
of this regulator. For PGDM schools numbering around 400
and having some of the top rated institutions in their midst,
this was a challenging situation, described Fr. E. Abraham S.
J., President of this new association. Prof. J Philip, President
of XIME, is one of the founders of the association who is also
credited with founding the 25 - year old Association of Indian
Management Schools (AIMS) with nearly 600 members.

Cricket
Sports Leagues
Sports at XIME form an important part of the extra
curricular activities and it goes without saying that
cricket is the most exciting of them all. This time
the students had a special reason to play the cricket
tournament since it was organized as a tribute to the
God of Cricket, Sachin Tendulkar. The event started
off by choosing three captains and allowing them to
pick players for their respective teams namely Master
Blasters, White Tigers and Challengers. Each
team played two matches and the final was played
between Master Blasters and Challengers, in which
the Master Blasters emerged victorious. They won a
cash prize also. The best batsman - Aashik Francis
& best bowler - Subhasish Baruah, were also given
cash prizes.
Football
Xoccer Liga, XIMEs own football league started
on the 17th of October, 2013 and had 6 teams
fighting it out for the winners title. The teams were
Avengers, Thunderbolts, Space Monkeys, Striking
Pandas, Underdogs and Victorious Secret. These
teams comprised of students from batches 18 and
19 it was a real tough fight to the top. There was
also a marketing event as part of the league. It was
a competition among the teams as to who put in the
best marketing effort for their respective teams. This
event was won by the Space monkeys. The final league
match was played on the 26th of October, 2013 and
the Thunderbolts marched their way to victory by
defeating the Avengers.

Houston Baptist University Team Visit
On 5th December sixteen students and two faculty
members from Houston Baptist University visited
XIME. The team was headed by Dr. Mohan Kuruvilla
and Dr. Mellissa Wiseman. XIME welcomed the
visitors by organising a series of interactive sessions

in which students and faculty of XIME exchanged
views with the visiting counterparts. On this occasion
President Prof. J Philip and Dr. Mohan Kuruvilla
renewed their commitment towards mutually
benefiting exchange programmes.

OBP Participants with Chief Resource Person Sr. Dean Prof. S D Tyagaraj at TMDC
Senior Dean, XIME, Prof. S D Tyagaraj conducted
and OBP for the executives of Tata Managment and
Development Centre (TMDC), Dimna, Jamshedpur
on 28-29 November 2013.The two day Programme
was on Action Centred Leadership. It involved
leadership buliding activites and team empowering
exercises.
Paper Presentations and Publications
Prof. C. P. Ravindranathan presented a paper on
Business Education in Asia Pacific at the Biennial
Conference of ABBS in Shanghai on 26th October
2013.
27th 29th November, 2013 at Centre for Culture
and Development, Vadodara. Aditya Agarwal
presented the paper titled Stratification and Growth
of Middle Class in Indian Muslim Community.
Prof. Kubendran N, of XIME Kochi, published a
paper titled Liberalised Foreign Investment Flows
and External Sector Sustainability in India, in Asian
Economic Review published by Indian Institute of
Economics during August 2013. He also published
another paper titled Sustainability of Persisting
Current Account Deficit in India, in Journal of
International Economics, published by Institute for
Public Enterprises, Hyderabad during December
2013. Dr. Naseer M. Jaffer, Alysia De Souza &
Prerna Chauhan, submitted a paper titled Informal
Employment and Urbanization Trends in India and
China-A Comparative Study for the 6th All India
Conference of China Studies which took place in
IIM Kozhikode on 12-14 December 2013.
Aditya Agarwal and Mrunal Agashe of Batch 18
ppresented a paper titled Business Analytics in
Microfinance - An Analysis of Social Empowerment
in the International Conference on Business
Analytics and Intelligence held on 11th 13th
December, 2013 at IIM-B.
Dr. Naseer M. Jaffer and Aditya Agarwal, student
of batch 18 submitted a paper for the seminar on
Tracking the Growth of Indias Middle Class held on
Ms Mareena Mathew, presented a paper titled
Outcome based strategies in the banking sector at
the 7th International conference organized by PESIT,
Bangalore on 22nd-23rd November 2013.
Prof. Ramana Acharyulu received The Outstanding
Reviewer Award 2013 from the Emerald Group.
He submitted a background note for research on
assessing the business models for Common Service
Centres as banking agents (in absentia), at the Global
Conference on Financial Inclusion and Payment
Systems (FIPS), New Delhi, October, 2013.

Dr. Masud M Arjmand
XIME -Kochi students had a very inspiring and
enlightening session on Talent Management by Dr.
Masud M Ajmand, a former partner of Accenture,
USA on 4 October. Quoting from the inspiring
speech of Steve Jobs at Stanford University, which was
about Stay Hungry Stay Foolish, he reminded the
students that decades of practice delivers legendary
performance. Hence, it is the responsibility of each
one to realize what one love to do and to discover the
little tiger within.
Mr. Elson Kuriakose
Mr. Elson. P. Kuriakose, an alumnus of XIME
Bangalore 12 Batch, and an HR Consultant in TATA
Hitachi visited XIME Kochi on 4 September to share
his experiences with the students. The essence of his
message was to connect the dots, identify areas of
interest and follow the heart. Jis best career move
by adhering to these tried, tested and true beliefs.
Through many revealing instances, he inspired the
students to have the courage to follow their conscience
when confronted with difficult dilemmas.
Mr. Anup Nambiar
XIME, Kochi was privileged to have Mr. Anup
Nambiar, Director, Channels, IBM as one of its guest
speakers on 3 September. Channel Management, a
topic of importance, was introduced to the students
during his lecture. He emphasized on how efficient
channel management helps in decreasing costs,
reaching potential customers and making profits.
The need to create value for all the customers cited
through various examples was the takeaway for all the
students.

Faculty Development Workshop

A Faculty Development Workshop was conducted
during the period 13th to 22nd September 2013 at
the XIME Kochi Campus. The participants were
principals and senior teachers of ICSE schools of
Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC).
There were eighteen participants attending this
programme who benefited from different activities
and lecture sessions of the Workshop.

Factory Visits
Students of XIME Kochi were privileged to visit
Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore on 16 October.
Students were enthusiastic to know about the
Operational and Marketing strategy of the factory.
All queries regarding the Marketing and Financial
strategy were answered by the Operating Head.
Students went on another Industrial Visit to HNL,
a Government of India Enterprise, on 7 December.
They understood the core operations and value
adding processes in making a paper from raw
materials like Eucalyptus & Bamboo. They were
given an opportunity to analyse the companys USP,
Core competency, Inbound and Outbound logistics
and Competitors and to observe how ISO 14001 is
implemented in a successful organisation.
A third visit was to KAMCO on 20 November,
where they were introduced to the production and
assembly line of a Power Tiller. They understood the
technical as well as the managerial aspects of a farm
based Equipment industry.

ISTD Southern Regional Conference 2013
It was a proud moment for all at XIME, when
ISTD Kochi Chapter organized its Southern
Regional Conference (SRC) 2013 at the Maria
Philip Auditorium, XIME Kochi on 25, 26 October.
The theme of the conference was Learning for
Development. The conference was inaugurated
by Mr. M.S. Unnikrishnan, M.D Thermax Ltd.
Prof. J. Philip, President, XIME delivered the
keynote address. The speakers during the technical

St. Xaviers Day
On 3rd December, 2013, XIME Kochi celebrated
the feast of the great Patron Saint St. Francis Xavier
with a holy mass in which his great contributions
and pioneering and life-changing endeavours were
remembered. Rev. Dr. George Madathiparambil,
former Principal S. B College led the mass and
christened the whole occasion in which the students
led the choir and assisted in the altar and offertory
services. The event was truly a blessing. The mass was
followed by a community breakfast.
