HD 497: Capstone
Course Class Reflection
The Capstone class has allowed me to realize how much I have learned and grown as a
person. First, scared and unclear of the expectations of the class, I was worried. Getting started
was a bit of a challenge for me, putting together an electronic web page portfolio seemed
intimidating to me as I am not computer savvy, not to mention the daunting APA. After diving
deep into reflection, I became at ease and the fluidity of my writing and my reflections steadily
improved.
Professor Robins fun and energetic charisma and her willingness to truly support this
reflective journey made this class one memorable experience. She invested in highlighting our
critical thinking and writing skills just as much as we did in preparing them, and together we
embarked on the last journey to the culmination of our success.
As I put together my portfolio I realize that much of what is found throughout my work
samples is deeply embedded in my teaching pedagogy. I found the words: whole child, selfesteem, secure attachment, learning through play, and many others as part of my responses in the
evidence presented of my learning and growth personally, professionally, and academically.
Revisiting courses and displaying evidence of my learning process gave me a sense of
pride and ownership. As my Capstone project reaches its completion, I can see hands on the
importance and the value of my education. I have demonstrated that I understand developmental
theories. I have demonstrated an understanding in valuing diversity, including an anti-bias
approach. I have also displayed the ability to communicate with others in a connective way, such
as in group projects. Through various research projects, I have demonstrated not only my ability
to communicate effectively and connect to others, but also my ability to collect, process, and
evaluate data through research. In my classroom, I feel I have the ability to observe, critically
reflect, implement theories and empower others, to benefit the children under my care, their
families, and the staff that I work with.
My journey through Pacific Oaks has definitely been an impactful experience. The
learning that I take from this institution has empowered me to better serve my community. I am
now better prepared and equipped to act as an agent of social change. The knowledge and
experience gained at PO has granted me the ability to serve my community as an advocate for
ethical responsive practices that foster independence in our youth.
I am thankful for this opportunity. I am thankful for the support of my professors, family
and friends alike. I am grateful for the friendships I reestablished and for the newly acquired
friendships. I am beyond proud of my achievements, my endurance, and determination. I have
developed a sense of pride and now that I have found my resilient self, I am eager to see what the
future awaits.
