Deacon Sermon
(per Para. 330.4(3) of the 2012 Book of Discipline)
Each candidate preparing for ordination is required to either:
1. Prepare and preach a sermon from his or her choice of Scripture(s). Each must be a sermon of
the candidates own composition and preached by the candidate in an appropriate worship
setting. Upload it to YouTube (or another such readily accessible site) and submit the URL to the
Registrar on this document. Also on this document, please state the date, worship setting and
reason for selecting the Scripture (i.e., It was the lectionary choice for the date) and include it
with the written copy of the sermon. The sermon submitted will be used by your interview team
as a basis for part of your interview. The sermon should give evidence of your ability to
communicate effectively, organize a sermon, develop ideas, employ sound exegesis and address
an audience persuasively. Be sure to include this instructional paragraph with your final copy.
OR
2. Prepare a detailed account explaining how your specialized ministry is proclamation of the Word.
Include specific case studies, descriptions of a program developed (with theological rationale,
specifics of audience reached and evaluations) or curricula for classes taught or retreats led.
