The registration fees, which shall include the Symposium
proceedings and food is `1000 for all the delegates `250 for
students. All payment should be made by A/c Payee DD in

PROLOGUE
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The mountain system makes one-fifth of the worlds
landscape and is the home to the 600 million people.
Mountain environments are essential to the survival of the
global ecosystems. In context to India, the hill regions are
sustaining its economy through the perennial river system
and precious forest wealth. Though hills and mountains
contain about 10 percent of the total population of the
country, yet almost half of the countrys population living in
or adjacent to mountain areas depend directly or indirectly
on the resources of the hills. Still the irony is that these
mountain ecosystems are fragile and highly susceptible to
disturbance, with a low ability to rebound and heal after
damage. The mountain range has now come under pressure
from all the corners in the name of development and has
become a vulnerable fragile zone of the earth. Though these
areas are the treasure houses for resources such as, water,
biological diversity, minerals, forest produce, agricultural
products, tourism, recreation etc., yet have tremendously
been affected by natural and man-made factors. Fragility of
the hill areas and challenges of planning and designing has
become a major thrust area in the present context. It has
become a major challenge to arrest the process of
degradation and ensure a sustainable development of the
Himalayan region.
NIT-Hamirpur, a premier Institute of the country, is situated
at Anu in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh and is 3
Kms from main bus stand on Hamirpur-Tauni Devi road, at
an altitude of 900 m. The Institute is about 210 km from
Chandigarh and 480 km from Delhi and is well connected by
the roads. The nearest broad gauge railway station is at Una
(Himachal Pradesh) which is 80 kms from Hamirpur. The
campus has a picturesque surroundings facing snow clad
Dhauladhar mountain ranges covered with lush green pine
trees. The nearest airports are at Shimla & Dharamshala.
Direct flights from Delhi to these places are available. The
famous international tourist places around Hamirpur are
Dharamshala (85 km), Shimla (150 km), Manali (230 km),
Dalhousie (200 km).

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur is one of the
leading Institute of India, imparting UG and PG courses in
Architecture & Engineering streams. Architecture Department
is the first government institute imparting Architectural
Education in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The department is
committed for the cause of Sustainable Development
encompassing; the principles of designing and planning in the
hill environs. Architecture Department is a Nodal Centre
identified by the Ministry of Home for National Programme
for Capacity Building of Architects in Earthquake Risk
Management (NPCBAERM).
OBJECTIVES OF THE SYMPOSIUM
ACCOMMODATION
The boarding and lodging during the symposium for the
participants can be provided at the Guest House / Hostels on
payment in twin-sharing. Traveling cost has to be borne by
the participants. The hotels are also available in the town at
nominal rates, depending upon the type of accommodation.
The participants interested in hotels are requested to inform
the organizers at least one week before the Symposium date.
Participants are advised to bring light woollen clothes.
OFFICIAL LANGUAGE
The official language of the symposium will be English.
The core objective of the symposium is to bring
Researchers, Architects, Planners, Engineers, Academicians
and Consultants on a common platform to discuss about the
emerging concerns arising out of the development in the
hill areas.
To understand and analyse the multiple meaning of
sustainability, its concepts and theories in assessing and
evaluating sustainable options in context to the hilly
regions of India.
To think systematically and holistically about socioeconomic development and cultural issues.
To understand the environmental management and disaster
mitigation in the hilly regions.
