EE-424 Advance Electrical Machines. Covers detailed and in depth aspects of
Electrical Machines. Transformers: Equivalent Circuit, per unit system of
measurement, voltage regulation and efficiency, three phase transformers, types
of connections, testing, parallel operation. Synchronous Generators: Equivalent
circuit and operations, Characteristics of Salient and Non-Salient poles, model
parameters, Single and parallel operation, ratings. Synchronous Motors: Basic
Principle, Equivalent Circuit, steady state operation: Torque speed
characteristics, power factor correction, starting of synchronous motors, ratings,
speed control. Induction Motors: Production of rotating field and torque,
Construction, Synchronous speed, Slip and its effect on rotor frequency and
voltage. Equivalent circuit. Power and torque. Losses, efficiency and power
factor. Torque-speed characteristic. Starting and speed control. Induction

1. To study different faults on a 3-phase transformer.
2. To verify the voltage ¤t relation for the star/star, star/delta, delta/star
and delta/delta connections of a 3-phase transformer.
3. To perform open and short circuit test on transformer and find copper and
core losses along with efficiency from the above tests.
4. To calculate the constants of equivalent circuit of the transformer from the
open and short circuit test.
5. To find the voltage regulation from the open and short circuit test and draw
a phasor diagram for lagging power factor.
6. To perform open and short circuit test on synchronous machine and to find
the synchronous impedances of synchronous generator.
7. To find reactance and resistance of armature winding from the above test.
8. To draw the V-curve and power factor curve of a synchronous machine from
the observed data obtained from the test i.e. Excitation current vs armature
current.
9. To perform the parallel operation on two single-phase transformers having
an equal voltage ratio.
10. To check the phase sequence of three phase supply using phase sequence
indicator.
11. To synchronize a 3-phase synchronous generator with the Bus-Bar using
the relevant equipment i.e. frequency meter, voltmeter, phase sequence
indicator and digital synchronoscope.
12. To perform the no load test and block rotor test on the three phase induction
motor.
13. To draw the circle diagram of induction motor and find the rotor Cu.loss,
stator Cu.loss, rotor current, stator input power factor & efficiency from the
above test.
14. Speed control of 3-phase wound rotor Induction motor using resistances in
the rotor circuit.
15. Speed control of Squirrel cage rotor by
Voltage Control
