ME-418 CAD/CAM
An essential tool for mechanical design and
drafting
More than one million mechanical engineers and
designers worldwide use advanced 3-D solid
modeling technology
Another two million use 2-D mechanical drafting
A Key for Improved Productivity
Entire automobiles, airplanes, and jet engines are
being designed in an integrated (CAD/CAE/CAM)
manner.
Internet is being used to exchange design data
worldwide.
Products that previously took several years to bring
to market can be developed in just months.
The products are more reliable, meet customer
expectations, better, and are less costly to
manufacture.

CAD History
1953, Ivan Sutherland developed the first
CAD system called Sketchpad.
PhD in Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Advance computer of the time
TX-2, 320 kb memory and 8 mb magnetic tap,
7 inch monitor and a light pen.
He produced drawings with Sketchpad.
The first CAD software is PRONTO
developed in 1957 by Dr. Patrick Hanartty of
General motors. He is known as the father of
CAD/CAM.

1960, many CAD systems came to market like
APPLICON, Auto-trol, computer vision, McAuto,
SDRC
1972, Mathematics Application Group introduced
the first 3D solid modeling software Syntha
Vision
1982, IBM launched its first PC, and AutoDesk
was founded. AutoCAD 1 released in 1982.
1985, CATIA was released which was only CAD.
1985, PTC emerged in the market with the brand
name Pro/Engineer. It was a complete
CAD/CAM system.

CAD/CAM System
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, GIKI
ME-418 CAD/CAM
A CAD/CAM system is a complex application
that requires both hardware and software.
Software are mostly written in primary
languages like C, C++, Fortran, Java
CAD/CAM systems may run as client or stand
alone

Acquiring a CAD/CAM System
CAD/CAM systems are classified in four groups
1. Low end systems
AutoCAD
ProDesktop
CadKey
2. Midrange systems
SolidWorks
ProE
MasterCAM
3. High end systems
IDEAS
Unigraphics
CATIA
4. Specialized systems

The selection of the CAD/CAM system is greatly
influenced by the size and complexity of the
product of the company.
A shoe making company will look for a system
which is good in surface modeling
Automobile industry will search for a system
which can solve complex problems of sheet metal
and die/mold design.
The manufacturer of parts on CNC will be
interested in a good CAM system.
