World Geography Unit: Webquest

This document proposes a project for a World Geography unit that will involve students learning about 7 countries through online webquests and an in-person presentation. Students will complete webquests on the UK, Germany, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Africa, and Italy that include videos of interviews with people from each country. They will then create a passport with their answers. Finally, students will present a project promoting a city within their assigned country. The proposal outlines the curriculum, timeline, and required software and hardware to complete the unit.

World Geography Unit:

Webquest
Introduction
In this unit students will learn about some of the major countries
in the World. The main purpose is to allow students the opportunity to
watch videos of actual people from that country. My hope is that with
the handful of countries that are picked I will be able to find an actual
person from that country to interview. In the interview questions about
their culture, area, growing up, and special traditions will be asked,
while being filmed. If an interviewee is not available I will create a
short video to go with that country. The unit will cover all the basic
information such as history, culture, interesting facts, currency, and
major landmarks. The countries are United Kingdom, Germany,
Mexico, Japan, Canada, Africa, and Italy. These might change if the
possibility of another country interviewee will become available. The
unit will include a small Webquest for each country and a PBL project
at the end for the student. This will be intended for a high school World
Geography class.
A website will be created on the site Weebly to allow easy
access for students to view the needed information. At this time, most
of the information will be up in the air until I start the internship at
Disney in two weeks. The people from different countries will most
likely be interviewed at Epcot, which is a theme park at Walt Disney
World.

Recommendations
The main purpose for this project is to allow students to see other parts of the
world and the people that live in them. This will be a World Geography Unit based on
seven different countries. Each will have their own short Webquest assignments that
students will have to complete and will make a traveling passport. They will have the
option to create a stamp for each country. The countries listed below will each have a
site dedicated to it. The site will consist of information about that country, pictures, and a
video about that country. The students will have a questionnaire that must be filled out
that will include information such as countries flag, currency, language, etc. Each
section will have directions and supplementary materials to help students with the
Webquest. The questionnaire will have between 8-10 different questions that will pertain
to the information on the website and the interviews.

The interviews are a huge part of this project. The major problem with this is
finding willing members to partake in the interview process. At the most, the interviews
would be between 5-10 minutes with each person interviewed. The possibility of
interviewing more than one person is also an option. The questions will be very broad
such as what is a special tradition that you have been involved in or what was it like to
grow up in insert country here. Food, culture, traditions, and language will be some of
the topics involved. If the possibility arrives that I will not be able to interview someone
from that country I can either create a video about that country or ask someone that has
visited it. An example, I have a friend that lived in Japan for five years. If the person
does not want to be in the video I will also add their commentary to a video. The great

thing about Epcot is there should be a ton of different options for interviews. The one
major thing I need to make sure that it will not infringe upon Disney trademarks. This
includes any pictures that are used. For instance, the pictures taken at Epcot will be
included in a Photostory option. The pictures shown below are from the United Kingdom
area and will be included in the project. The best way for students to view all of the
great pictures is in a Photostory video.
The one aspect of the project that will be student centered is the Project Based
Learning project. After students have finished the Webquests and created a Passport
with all of the assignments. The students will be given a country and will pick a popular
city to create an informative project on. For instance, if a student is given the United
Kingdom they might pick London. They will create a project trying to encourage travel to
London. They will incorporate some of the most popular attractions, history, and
information about that city. They will use what they found on the site to create this
project. A day will be set up for the students to show off their projects for parents,
students, and other teachers. They will set up a table with different things they have
created. The options are Power Point presentation, info video, poster board, and they
will discuss what they learned to the other guests. They will create a stamp for each
passport to make sure they visit every station.

Epcot will be included in a separate video photo story as shown
above. It will also include music from that area, such as the Beatles.
The picture shown below is the template for the Passport that
students will create with their own picture.
