Ecosystem

The Philippines has extremely high biodiversity, with over 52,000 described species, more than half of which are found nowhere else. It likely has more species diversity than any other country. However, it is considered a biodiversity hotspot under threat due to high rates of environmental destruction like damage to coral reefs and forests. Biodiversity increases organisms' ability to adapt to changing environments and contributes to ecosystem stability by sustaining energy flow through food webs.

ECOSYSTEM:

BIODIVERSITY

PHILIPPINES: A DIVERSE
ECOSYSTEM
The country has more than 52, 177
describe species of which more than half is
found nowhere else in the world.
On a per unit area basis, the Philippines
probably harbors more diversity of life than
any other country on the planet.

WARNINGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!
Our country is
considered as a
biodiversity hotspot.
This is because our
country is
continuously
experiencing an
alarming rate of
environmental
destruction like
damage of coral reels,
forest, and other
similar important
resources.

OBJECTIVES
Explain how biodiversity of species increases
probability of adaptation and survival of
organisms in changing environment.
Explain the relationship between population
growth and carrying capacity
Suggest ways to minimize human impact on
the environment.

CATEGORIES OF SPECIES

DIRECT ECONOMIC VALUE

INDIRECT ECONOMIC VALUE
AESTHETIC VALUE

DIREC ECONOMIC VALUE

The species is
considered to
have direct
economic value
if their
products are
sources of food,
medicines,
clothing, and
energy.

INDIRECT ECONOMIC VALUE

The species has
an indirect
economic value
if there are
benefits
produced by
the organism
without using
them.

AESTHETIC VALUE

A species has
an aesthetic
value if it
provides
visual or
artistic
enjoyment.

Importance of Biodiversity
Biodiversity is vey important because it sustains
through flow of energy the food web on earth and
contributes to environmental stability.
Stability of an ecosystem can be described as the
resilience to withstand changes that may occur in
the environment.
There are many changes that occur in the
environment which may be a result of natural or
human activities.
These changes may severely reduce biodiversity
and result to the instability of the ecosystem.
