Networking Day Notes
Jeannie is an incredible energetic Intermediate Librarian. She has been a media coordinator for about 18 years.
Favorite Quote: Some people have a problem getting students into their library, and I cant get them to leave. She said
this with a huge smile. Her job is definitely her passion.
Ideas:
Her reading program is always tied to a historical event. She is highlighting flight this year.
Collaborative lessons with Language Arts teachers are ideal. Teaches research and even grades the students
essays for the Language Arts teachers. She says that not only does it help her adjust her teaching, but it builds a
better relationship with classroom teachers.
She has a method for the bookstore arrangements of series. She places them on top of the shelves in
alphabetical order.
She has an abundance of comfortable seating for comfortable reading.
During lunch students can come in and play chess or read.
Debbie is in her second year as the media coordinator at Sunset Elementary School. She is so organized and fun. The
atmosphere of her media center is so inviting.
Favorite Quote: Well, when that change was made I just had to figure it out.
Ideas:
Bookmarks with student names sorted by teachers. They each have the students barcode so checkout is much
quicker. Bookmarks also house notes to pass on to students, awards (stickers), and it difficult situations behavior
tracking. This was an incredible stream lined system.
Brag tags for students completing a poetry challenge. This is a challenge she created to help offer extension
activities to support classroom teachers.
Requested a projector and they are in the process of installing.
Found out the district will make large banners for $20. She is requesting a shared file of graphics that are under
the creative commons because she doesnt know where to find them.
Sonya has been the Librarian at East Elementary for several years. She does an excellent job managing her schedule. For
two days a week she has two classes at a time for the entire day. This allows for classroom teachers to have professional
learning time and team meetings. Although, the situation is difficult she is making it work.
Quote: When I asked how many items were housed in the library, which opened in 1983 she said, Probably over
20,000.
Ideas:
Currently working on preparing for moving to their new building. The new media center will be a significantly
smaller.
Talked about moving books on pallets with labels so they can go straight to the proper shelves.
Worried about Mrs. Barlows retirement as she depends on her for support.
Wondered the best way to address the organization of the non-fiction section sports section without going into
the decimals.
George Washington Academy is a charter school. I was able to meet with one of their aides.
Ideas:
Lexile labels on the spine of every book. Labor intensive but helpful in an elementary setting.
Considering they only have a part time librarian she has great ideas about time saving.
She has shelves labeled with the new book processing steps and as each step is performed the books is
moved along. It allows her to put the book down at any phase and remember where she left off.
Students alphabetize books when they return them.
Draws student names to sit in the bean bag chairs so students all get turns, and allows to separate
behavior issues.
I really liked the layout of this library, and the murals on the walls.
