Creative Minds in Search of Inspiration

Ezra is struggling to find inspiration to write in his current surroundings. He tells Dan that he needs to get away from their lifeless town and be surrounded by wild young artists like in Kerouac's On the Road. Ezra wants to go to Italy with Dan to find inspiration, though Dan points out they can't literally drive to Italy. At a student discussion about Ezra's work, Leanne criticizes Ezra for comparing himself to great authors like Hemingway when he hasn't produced anything of note lately. Ezra continues to feel uninspired by his current environment and peers.

EZRA
I hate how those guys think/ They dont have an idea between them,
Ill bet.
DAN
Dont listen to them, we all know youre right
EZRA
I just cant write here. I need to be with the dingledodies! Who
have I got to inspire me here? Dan Brown? Get out! Ive got to get
out!
DAN
Where would you go?
EZRA
Italy, Paris is too on the nose, Italy is just the right amount of
pretentious. We have to go together, and be like Kerouac and Cassidy
in On the Road.
DAN
We cant drive to Italy!
EZRA
I mean in spirit! Well go down and find all the wild young artists.
Come with me, well start a new generation.

Voice over 1
Fade in as introduction ends and library scene begins
Quote extracted from Allen Ginsburg:
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness,
starving hysterical naked.
Poetry is the only place where people can speak their original
human mind.

Ext. Woodland Day.

Transition from Ezra in library to Dan and Ezra walking and
conversing about his work.
DAN
So hows it coming along?
EZRA
Ezra sighs
(Quote extracted from On the Road by Jack Kerouac)

What is that feeling when youre driving away from people and
they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing?
DAN
You should be embracing Kerouacs words not diminishing them
EZRA
Dont you see it Dan? I cant think let alone work in this
lifeless, mind-numbing place. Were surrounded by people who
dont know how to pour their emotions out anymore, were
vacant shells scattered in an abyss
DAN
Listen close Ezra
Extracted from Woody Allen
We all fear death and question our place in the universe the
artists job is not to succumb to despair but to find an
antidote for the emptiness of existence.

Impressionism, cubism, Dadaism - everythings happened
already. Im sure I could have been a real pioneer back in the
day, under Gertrude Steins wing, sipping whisky with
Hemingway - or dropping Benzedrine with Kerouac with the blue
centerlight pop. Im sure there was no such thing as writers
block in the beats, or the losts.

Students having a round table discussion about Ezras work and
literature.
LEANNE
He was a flunk! Sure his stories are unique but the writing
itselfPHIL
Oh dont be so nave Leanne you know you could never produce
anywhere near as good work as Hemmingway
SALLY
Yeah and if he was such a flunk then how do you explain the
countless readers hes inspired
EZRA
Hemingsways work was simple and captivating you cant compete
with talent Leanne I would know
LEANNE
Oh? And what amazing work have you pulled out of the bag
lately which gives you the right to compare yourself to the
likes of Hemmingway?
DAN
Leanne!
