Midsummer Light Cues

The lighting cues will use realistic lighting for scenes without fairies but more magical lighting when fairies are present, using moving patterns and deeper colors. Low level sidelights may be used for fairies depending on the scenic design. The cues transition between realistic lighting for scenes in Athens and more mystical lighting using patterns, sidelights, and colors for scenes in the forest with the fairies. Individual characters may also be isolated with specials.

MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM LIGHT CUES

In general the lighting will be realistic in nature during scenes without the fairies, but
when the fairies are around it should be more magical. Moving patterns and deeper colors will
be used when the fairies are around. If possible low level sidelights will be used for fairies, this
will be partially dependent on the scenic design.

CUE 1: Houselights/Preshow. Mystic, magical world. Cyc in blue with a hint of amber at
the bottom. Purple & blue sidelight? Possible patterns from top or back sides in amber. Waning
Moon Projection.

CUE 2: House to Half.

CUE 3: House Out

CUE 4: AF - Blackout

Prologue / Dance

CUE 5: Return to mystic forest. Cyc in dark blue with a hint of blue-green at the bottom
(Aurora Borealis). Purple & blue sidelight? Possible patterns from top or back sides in amber,
rotating. ML isolated on Puck if possible. Isolate all lighting on Puck if possible

CUE 6: Add low level amber and blue frontlight for dance. Expand lighting to cover
entire stage.

CUE 7: Slowly change sidelight to afternoon sunlight as dance ends. Add blue toplight.
Fade patterns and deep colored sidelight. Isolate on Theseus and Hippolyta.

Act 1, Scene 1 Athens, Palace of Theseus

CUE 8: Add lighting for court scene. Add amber & blue frontlight. Amber & blue
sidelight. Court window sidelight streaming in from one side. Light blue toplight. Try to avoid
lighting trees and forest if possible, except in silhouette.

CUE 9: Add more frontlight if necessary for additional actors.

CUE 10: Isolate on Lysander & Hermia

CUE 11: Expand Area if necessary.

CUE 12: If possible isolate on Helena, but do not loose general atmosphere.

CUE13: Scene change lights.

Act 1, Scene 2 Quinces Carpentry Shop
CUE 14: Amber and blue frontlight. Cyc in light blue. Amber window pattern from one
side & light blue sidelight from other sidelight. No backlight. Try to avoid lighting trees and
forest if possible, except in silhouette.

CUE 15: Scene change lights.

Act 1, Scene 3 Woods, Evening

CUE 16: Return to mystic forest. Low level amber and blue frontlight for dance. Cyc in
dark blue with a hint of blue-green at the bottom (Aurora Borealis). Purple & blue sidelight?
Possible patterns from top or back sides in green rotating. Large moon projection on cyc.

CUE 17: Cue to show tension between Titania & Oberon. Add motion and/or color of
Aurora Borealis or flash of lightning. Think about this idea.

CUE 18: Isolate frontlight on Oberon & Puck. Fade tension effect from Cue 17 (Aurora
Borealis). Reduce Rotating patterns (Fairies Light).

CUE 19: Isolate even more on Oberon?

CUE 20: Add frontlight on Athenians. Reduce influence of patterns & Sidelight but do not
loose the sidelight.

CUE 21: Return to Cue 18 or 19. Adjust area lighting.

CUE 22: Increase rotating patterns and or sidelight (Fairies Light).

CUE 23: Return to Cue 21

CUE 23.5: Aurora Borealis effect. (Like Cue 17)

CUE 24: Add ML Light special on Titania

CUE 25: Return to Cue 20. Fade special on Titania.

CUE 26: Return to Cue 22.

CUE 26.5: Add ML Light special for Lysander.

CUE 27: Return to Cue 25. Adjust area if necessary. Fade ML Special.

CUE 28: Adjust acting area for players entrance.

CUE 29: Add magical light like Cue 26.


CUE 30: Return to Cue 28.

CUE 30.5: Return to Cue 29. If possible ML Special on Bottom like earlier special on
Titania. (Cue 24)

CUE 31: Return to Cue 28, but leave patterns rotating. Maintain fairy lighting.

CUE 31.5: Add ML on Titania. Like Cue 24. Expand lighting to entire stage if possible.

CUE 32: Expand Area if necessary.

CUE 32.5: Add dance lighting for song. More sidelight, less frontlight. Increase Rotating
Light?

CUE 33: Isolate on Puck. Like Cue 5.

CUE 33.5: Blackout.

CUE 34: Intermission Up (Similar to Preshow)

CUE 35: AF - House Up.

CUE 36: House to Half.

CUE 37: House Out

CUE 40: Expand area to include Athenians. Magical lighting should recede to area of
Oberon & Puck.

CUE 41: Return magical lighting to levels from Cue 39.

CUE 41.5: Add ML Special on Demetrius like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 42: Return to Cue 40 with Magical light in area of Oberon & Puck, if possible.
CUE 43: Return to Cue 39.

CUE 44: Adjust acting area if needed.

CUE 45: Adjust acting area if needed.

CUE 46: Adjust acting area if needed.

CUE 47: Add ML Special on Lysander like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 48: Add ML Special on Demetrius like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 49: Add ML Special on Helena like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 50: Add ML Special on Hermia like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 50.5: Add ML Special on Lysander like the one used on Bottom in Cue 30.5.

CUE 51: Increase rotating lights and sidelight on entire stage (Fairies Light).

CUE 51.5: Add ML Light special on Titania. Like Cue 24.

CUE 52: Cue to show tension between Titania & Oberon. Add motion and/or color of
Aurora Borealis or flash of lightning. Think about this idea.

CUE 52.5: Add lighting for dance. Fade frontlight.

CUE 53: AF- Transition from night to dawn as they dance as if time is passing more
quickly.

CUE 54: Stop rotation of patterns as Fairies exit. Athenian Lighting.

CUE 55: Adjust acting area as needed.

CUE 56: Return to Athens? Amber and blue frontlight. Cyc in light blue. Amber window
pattern from one side & light blue sidelight from other sidelight. No backlight. Try to avoid
lighting trees and forest if possible, except in silhouette. If still in forest reduce intensity of
forest.

CUE 57: Scene change lights.

CUE 58: Add lighting for court scene. Add lavender & blue frontlight. Blue-green & blue
sidelight. Cyc in dark blue with a hint of magenta at the bottom of Cyc. Possible patterns from
top or back sides in green not rotating. Stars on cyc.
CUE 59: Isolate frontlight on location of actors & prologue area if possible. Leave some
light on Theseus and Hippolyta.

CUE 60: Add Moonlight on Snout/Wall.

CUE 61: Add light on Bottom/Pyramus.

CUE 62: Add light on Flute/Thisbe.

CUE 63: Fade lights on Bottom/Pyramus and Flute/Thisbe.

CUE 64: Fade lights on Snout/Wall.

CUE 65: Add lights on Snug/Lion and Starveling/Moonshine.

CUE 66: Add light on Flute/Thisbe.

CUE 67: Fade light on Flute/Thisbe.

CUE 68: Add light on Bottom/Pyramus.

CUE 69: Fade lights on Starveling/Moonshine. Add some red to cyc?

CUE 70: Add more red on cyc?

CUE 71: Add lights for dance (I need to see dance)

CUE 72: Fade all frontlight.

CUE 73: Add ML on Puck.

CUE 74: Add fairy lighting similar to Cue 17

CUE 75: Add lighting for music/dance (I need to see dance)

CUE 76: Blackout.

CUE 77: Curtain Call.

CUE 78: Add ML Special on Puck.

CUE 79: Brownout.

CUE 80: Blackout.

CUE 82: AF Add Houselights
