First Movement, Scene 1
Time and Place: 1950s, boardwalk on the sea, sunset
What Happens: Eurydice and Orpheus talk and walk along the boardwalk. Orpheus throws
Eurydice in the air. Orpheus proposes to Eurydice. They run into the water together.
Theme: Quickly falling in love. Contrast between knowledge and creativity.
Environmental Descriptions: “invisible sea,” “extensive unseen boardwalks”
Imagistic Language: “I’m going to make each strand of your hair into an instrument.” “[Your
melody] will be imprinted on my heart like wax.”

Second Movement, Scene 1
Time and Place: The Underworld
What Happens: Eurydice arrives at the Underworld and is greeted by her dad who can speak and
remembers his life. Eurydice does not remember her father or her life and cannot speak. The
Stones are mad that her father can remember because he is not supposed to remember.
Theme: Forgetting, confusion, memories, disobeying orders
Environmental Descriptions: “The Underworld should resemble the world of Alice in
Wonderland more than it resembles Hades.” “Strange watery noises.” An elevator that rains. A
train platform. “Rusty pipes”
Imagistic Language: “Father is not a word that dead people understand.” “The station is like a
train but there is no train. The train is the opposite of a wheel and the opposite of smoke and the
opposite of a train.” “How do you say goodbye to yourself?” “Like if the pores in your face
opened up and talked.”
