The response from CardMaker readers has been wonderful. The cards are amazing,
as are the stories telling why people are donating. Ive even had people from other
countries call and write to tell me they get CardMaker magazine and love to make
cards, but the passion behind it is so moving. One lady wrote that she is donating in
memory of her sister, another lady in memory of her husband. Some are survivors

Designer Lisa Silver spends much of her time working in the science
industry. Lucky for us, she also finds time in her busy schedule to create
beautifully handcrafted cards. The love for crafting that she learned from
her mother and grandmother shines through in her designs. Were always so
glad when we can include her work in CardMaker! Lisa has been a member
of numerous design teams along with being on the CardMaker blog team
earlier this year, and is known for making cards with attention to detail and
exquisite coloring. Lisa began her paper-crafting journey 10 years ago, and

sit down with designer Ive been married to my best friend, Tim, for 20 years and have two amazing

supply chain manager for a large life-science company. I have been crafting
in some form all my life, learning at the side of my fabulously creative mother
and grandmother. Paper crafting was introduced to me in 2006 by a friend,
and Ive been hooked ever since.

Im very lucky to have one of the bedrooms of the house to myself.In

2008, I designed the room to get the maximum impact from the space
using low-cost options.I have a U-shaped work space with a foundation
of purchased unfinished cabinets that I painted white.I used file cabinets
as the base with added cubbies to meet the same height.Along all three
sides, I have space for a chair or rolling storage.One of the best things
we did when we renovated the room was to add a simple laminate
floor.Getting glitter or paper bits out of the carpet was impossible, and
it made it ideal to get a rolling desk chair.I recently added new laminate
countertops, as I previously had painted wooden ones we made at the
time of installation.This has been an amazing upgrade as its easier to
keep clean.

The industrial trend of metal is very popular right now in home decor.
Youre seeing iron marquee letters being used as wall decor, stainless steel
appliances, and countertops in kitchens and wire lighting fixtures adding
ambiance to rooms. This popular trend is very evident in paper crafting and 1
card making as well.

Creative Paper Clips

One of the easiest ways to incorporate metal
into a card design is to dress up a basic paper
clip (Photo 1). There are also fun, premade wire
words or icons that can actually double as
embellishments and paper clips. You can even use
floral wire or wire from the hardware store to make
your own designs.
Basic paper clips are one of my favorite inexpen-
sive embellishments to use on cards. Just slide one
on a layer of paper and tie on a piece of twine or
ribbon, or attach a fabric flower or pretty gem;
you have an instant, custom embellishment that
will add a special touch to your card. Check your
local office supply store for metal paper
clips in a variety of colors beyond the
standard silver.
Craft manufacturers, such as Maya Road, also
offer different-shaped paper clips. These clips
work just like a regular paper clip and slide over
the edge of a piece of paper, which in most instances
causes a portion of the clip design to be hidden.
The solution is to use the clip as an embellishment
instead! Simply attach the clip to the front of your
card with a small amount of glue, an adhesive dot
or a staple. If youre handy with a needle and thread,
consider stitching the clip to the card.

Wire Words
Jillibean Soup is another company that has created
wire words that are similar to the Maya Road clips,
but these words dont slide over the edge of the paper
like a clip. You can use the previously mentioned
methods to attach these to your cards. They are very
thin and lightweight and only need a little glue or a
few staples or stitches to hold them in place (Photo 2).

DIY Wire Embellishments

Now that you have some ideas on how to use wire
embellishments on your projects, try your hand at

and then lift off the sheet. The metallic color transfers from the foil onto the adhesive.
You can use a foam adhesive, a heat-activated adhesive or a liquid adhesive. All three are easy to
use, and choosing one is just a matter of your design.
For these projects, Im using the iCraft Deco Foil stash from Therm O Web. Designed to work
together, they make it easy to create beautiful foiled effects. Best of all, the foil and the adhesive
will go a long way and every bit can be put to use. Its a great way to add metallic sheen to your
cards quickly and easily!

I always try to sit down with a crafting purpose in mind.
I set a goal to create a certain number of birthday or
sympathy cards in the time I have. Knowing what needs
to be created makes it easier to get started. Otherwise, I
tend to wander around my craft space without knowing
where to begin. Gather all your supplies and youre set
to create!
