Brains Are Made of Memristors: References

The document discusses how ion channels in neurons exhibit characteristics of memristors. Specifically, potassium and sodium ion channels along axons show memristor fingerprints like pinched hysteresis loops in voltage-current planes that shrink with increasing signal frequency. Since synapses and axons, which are responsible for neural computation, can be electronically emulated using local passive and active memristors, the document argues that brains can be considered to be made of memristors.

Abstract

Brains Are Made

of Memristors
1. This exposition shows that the potassium ion-channels and the sodium ion-
channels that are distributed over the entire length of the axons of our
neurons are in fact locally-active memristors. In particular, they exhibit all of
the fingerprints of memristors, including the characteristic pinched
hysteresis Lissajous figures in the voltage-current plane, whose loop areas
shrinkas the frequency of the periodic excitation signal increases.

2. Since synapse and axons are the two fundamental components of

neurons responsible for computation and information processing in
the brain, and since both synapses and axons can be emulated
electronically by locall ypassive memristors, and locally-active
memristors respectively
