Fairfax Traffic Solutions Plan

The document summarizes a student's final project proposal to ease traffic in Fairfax County, Virginia. The student proposes running a new bus line between Fairfax and Reston cities and expanding a narrow, congested road section. Main causes of traffic identified through GIS analysis include Fairfax County's large population, high commuter rates by car, and underdeveloped public transportation. Maps show population density, commuting patterns, existing roads and bus routes, and potential new bus route alignments. The recommendations are to run the new bus line and expand the road to help alleviate traffic.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

There is not enough public transportation

between Fairfax and Reston

For my project, I chose an area that I know very well and I

believe it can be better in terms of making the commute easier
and faster by creating a new bus line between two cities and
expanding one area of the road because it is very narrow and
gets a lot of traffic during the rush hours.

MAIN CAUSES
This is the population density map that shows that Fairfax
county is the most populated area in the state of Virginia. Fairfax county
To create the map, I used ArcMap software.
MAIN CAUSES
Population of the research area. This map illustrates how the area is
populated and that a lot of people like to live here.

You can see that Fairfax county is number 1 in percentage of people who
commute everyday. It is more than 80%. Also, in most cases people have

This map shows the area I
chose to study. The start
point is Fairfax city and the
destination is Reston. The
main roads here are
Lawyers rd and Reston
parkway. It is around 6-7
miles between two points
and it takes 45 mintes
each morning to get to the
final destination.

GIS ANALYSIS
Map 1 showing the everyday route from Fairfax to Reston

Reston
I took a map that is a prototype
of the area. With the Network
Analyst tool, I was able to show
that from Fairfax there is the
route which I usually use to get
to Reston. In the mornings, it is
jammed somewhere along the
Lawyers road.

GIS ANALYSIS
Map 2 showing the alternative route from Fairfax to Reston

Reston
In this map, network
analyst gave me alternative
route to get to the
destination, because I
propose to close Lawyers
rd for a construction to
expand it in 3 lines each
way road. Commuters will
need to take this
alternative road to avoid
Fairfax the construction side and it
will take them may be 5
minutes more.
GIS ANALYSIS
Map 3 showing the route for a new bus line between Fairfax to
Reston
Reston
In this map, I want to
show a new route for a
new bus line between
Fairfax and Reston. I
think a lot of commuters
will prefer this to driving
everyday. And in my
calculations, it may be
the same amount of time
to get to Reston.
Fairfax
CONCLUSION
Recommendations:

Run a new bus line

Expand the road between Fairfax and Pooling with neighbors
Reston
