Whatthedetective'sstoryisaboutisnotmurderbuttherestorationoforder.

P.D.James.ADetectiveisaninvestigator.Somemaybeprivateresearchersandmaybe

knownasTheEyethatneversleeps,whichisthemottoofthePinkertondetective

agency,alsoknownasPrivateEyes.Adetectiveisalicensedindividualwhosolves

crimesincludingpastcrimesbyexaminingandevaluatingcluesandpersonalrecordsto

uncovertheidentityofthecriminal.Apolicedetectiveimpactsthecommunityby

servingandprotecting,solvingcrimes,andhelpingintimesofcrisistomakethe

worldanexceptionalplacetolivein.

Firstandforemost,thenumberoneimpactthatpoliceshouldmakeistoserve

andprotectthesociety.Thatistheirfirstdutynomatterwheretheyreat.Thepolicemake

abruntinthecommunitysincethey'retheoneswhomakemostoftheatrociousguysgoto

jailbecausethesocietyseestheiractionsasawful.Thecitizenswanttheambiancetobe

protected,andthat'swhatthepolicedetectivesaretheretoprovide.Thecommunitygetsto

havedayswithasenseofprotectionwhilethedetectivescanhavewhattheycallabadday.

Apolicedetectiveworkstogatherfactsandevidenceforcriminalcases.They

interviewpotentialsuspects,witnesses,andothersassociatedwiththecrime,thoughthis

theygatherasmuchdataastheycantosolvethecase.Policedetectiveswillworkoncases

untiltheygetanarrestandhaveaconvictionmadebut,theyneedtokeeptheirnotesand

importantinformationiftheyneedtotestifyincourt.Theirjobistomaketheworldasafer

placetolivein,withlesscrimeandkeepthestreetscleanfromanythingthatisbad.For

example,AneveningofMarch10,2003twoNewYorkPoliceDepartmentdetectives,

JamesV.NemorinandRodneyJ.Andrews,wereshotandkilledinanunmarkedpolicecar

whileattemptinganundercoverpurchaseofaTec9assaultpistolonStatenIslandThese

copswereshotandkilledbyRonellWilsonandanaccompliceduringarobberyattempt.

HundredsofhairsfibreswerefoundinthenissanfoundbyLisaFaberwhichshecollected

thisscarethecommunityintothinkingthatthefugitivecouldbeafterthem.Itrilesthe

peopleup.Detectiveswhocan'tsolvecases,areleadtocountingonthecommunityfor

help,astheycanhavetheanswerstotheinvestigationsthatareunsolved.

Inanycase,wheneverthere'sacrisisahomicideanemergencythepoliceshow

upandsendpeopletothepublicfirst.AfterthehurricaneKatrinapassedinAugust29

September24,atotalof51casesofCOpoisoningwerereportedbyhyperbaricoxygen

(HBO2)facilitiesinAlabama,Louisiana,andMississippi(CentersForDisease).This

naturaldisasterchangedthelivesofmanytowhichthepolicedepartmentwerelefttotake

careandhelpouttheonesinneed.Theymustbeequippedwithwaymorethanjustagun

andabadge,Policedetectivesmusthavekitsoffoodandwaterandfirstaidsjustincase

theyneedtousethemduringdisastersforthepeople.Researchhasshownthatsuccessful

disastermanagementresultsprimarilyfromtheactivitiesofemergencyorganizations.In

particular,therearemanagementproblemswithrespecttothecommunicationprocess,the

exerciseofauthority,andthedevelopmentofcoordination.(Quarantelli)Thepoliceare

justasvulnerableasthepeoplewhenanaturaldisasterstrikesandalthoughtheyare

helpinginacrisis,theyhavetosuccumbwhattheyfeel.Thecommunityiswhatneedsthe

help.

Ultimately,policedetectiveshavemoregoingonthenjustpatrollingthe

neighborhood,theyhavetoprotectthemselvesfromthecommunityaswell,assomeofthe

communitydislikepolicedetectivesandiswillingtoevenkillthem.Everythingapolice

detectivesdoesistoprotectthecommunityandimpacttheminawayforthemtoseethat

alltheyretryingtodoismaketheworldabetterplacebyservingandprotecting,helping

withnaturaldisastersandinvestigatingcrimes.Thepolicedetectivewhoputstheirlifeon

thelinewithnosuperpowers,noXrayvision,nosuperstrength,noabilitytofly,and

aboveallnoinvulnerabilitytobullets,revealsfargreatervirtuethanSupermanwhois

onlyameresuperhero(Yudkowsky).
