Lesson 7
Title: Adding Nickels and Pennies
Lesson Overview: As a precursor to adding a mixed collection of coins, students need to learn
how to add nickels and pennies.
Resources or Materials Needed:
      Real coins (dimes, nickels, and pennies)
      Variety of toys/items
      Ten frame
      Document Camera
      Small group set of IPads with mobile application, Seesaw, loaded.
Lesson Objectives: Given a dime, nickel and 2 pennies, students will verbally identify the
combined value with 100% accuracy. Given a dime, nickel and two pennies, students will
demonstrate an understanding of the concept of counting on as a strategy to find the value of the
collection by explaining their thinking orally with 100% accuracy.
Time: 1.5 hours.
Step 1: Pre-instructional activities: print and cut out the Money Talk cards, assemble the small
toys/items and the real coins. Load the Seesaw application on the iPads. Set up the document
camera.
Step 2: Content presentation Bring students to the carpet and use the document camera to show
a dime. How many cents do we have? (10). How do you know? Show a dime and a nickel.
How many cents do we have now? (15). How do you know? Model counting on from 10 by
holding the 10 in your head and counting on with the nickel. Show a dime, nickel, and 3
pennies. How many cents do we have? (18). How do you know? Repeat with different
combinations of a dime, nickel and pennies up to 20 cents.
Step 3: Learner Participation: Today, students are going to use their knowledge of coins and
values to buy a toy. Have the toys (erasers, stickers, pencils, etc.) laid out for students to choose
with price tags attached. There will be real coins at each students table. Call each student up to
choose an item. Students will return to their seats, find the coins needed to buy that item. They
will then take a picture of the coins, and use the recording function to add a recording of their
voice. Students will record themselves identifying the value of the coins and explaining their
thinking.
Step 4: Assessment: For this lesson, the instructor will take anecdotal notes from the students
Seesaw entries showing them counting the coins and explaining their thinking.
Step 5: Follow-through activities: Students will need adequate time to practice adding up the
value of a collection of coins.
After the entire unit has been taught, the instructor will give the Collection Value and Thinking
assessment to judge whether the students can add the combined value of the collection and
explain their thinking.
