Pakistan's Transport Patterns

The document summarizes transport patterns and infrastructure in Pakistan. It notes that railways are more dense in Punjab compared to Sindh, where they are limited to areas along the Indus River. Large parts of southern Balochistan and northern Pakistan also lack railways. Rail transport is efficient for carrying large volumes of raw materials but is inflexible compared to roads. Air routes are concentrated between major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta, and follow the Indus Plain, but there are few routes in remote northern, southeastern, or southwestern areas. Recent improvements to transport infrastructure in northern Pakistan include the Karakoram Highway and airports in Gilgit and Skardu, helping development.

Transport

Pattern of Railways
The difference in the density of the pattern of railways in Punjab compared with that in
Sindh. Sindh is as densely served as Punjab, whereas railways in Sindh are mainly limited
to a band either side of the Indus.
Large areas of southern Balochistan and the north of Pakistan lack railways.

What are the advantages of rail transport for carrying raw materials to factories?
railways are an efficient way to carry large quantities of raw materials, heavy and
bulky raw materials.

What are the disadvantages of rail transport for carrying raw materials to factories?
railways are inflexible, especially in comparison with road transport.
there are large areas not served by railways; do not reach many individual farms,
mines, forests or factories.
The problem of different railway gauges
Problems of using old railway stock and track.

With the help of examples explain why large areas of Pakistan have no railways and
only a few roads, which are mostly kacha.
the lack of possible users
economic constraints (not enough funds to build tracks, metalled roads)

Give two recent (since 1970) improvements in transport which have linked the
Northern Area to the rest of Pakistan. Explain how these improvements are helping
the development of the Northern Area.

the Karakoram Highway has been built

Gilgit and Skardu airports have been built
the metal surfacing of the road from the KKH to Skardu (and on to Khapulu)

Describe the distribution of air routes in Pakistan

Largest numbers/biggest foci from Karachi
Centres/foci in other major cities e.g. Lahore, Multan, Turbat, Quetta,
More south-north/SW-NE/less east-west
Many routes follow Indus Plain
Branches up other valleys e.g. Peshawar-Chitral
None in extreme north,
Few/none in Chagai, SE Sindh/Thar

Why is air transport and travel important within Pakistan?

Faster than road and rail
Better to reach remote places/places where roads are poor
Better in hilly/mountainous areas
Better for light, high value goods
Less chance of robbery/safer
More people can afford air fares
More demand from business
Can be used all year/not affected by snow, flood etc.
Tourism within Pakistan
Emergencies
Improved communication between cities
