EDUC 359: Introduction to ELL
Fall 2017
Vocabulary Reflection
Today in class, we performed an exercise that would help us perfect our vocabulary
teaching method. The method we were taught to begin our vocabulary lesson with consisted of a
few steps. First, I needed to ask the students if they could use two predetermined words in a
sentence. If the students could perform this task, I would substitute one or both words with
different words. If the students could not use the words in a sentence, I would ask them what
they think the word means. I would ask them to describe or define the word in their own terms,
so I could determine how much prior knowledge they have on the topic. Next, I would find a
visual aid (picture) to support my instruction and write a sentence with the vocabulary word
present. I would use this to discuss the vocabulary and show my students what the vocabulary
means. For example, I used a picture of Amelia Bedelia to describe and discuss the word
malapropism.
By using examples and situations, I am providing rich and decontextualized knowledge
of the words; Which will improve and build upon my students understanding. I could achieve my
objective by using both visual and oral aides to my students. This method allowed for students to
think and absorb knowledge based on prior knowledge. This activity made it clear to me, that as
a classroom teacher, I should make learning accessible to all my students. In regards to ELLs, I
would do my research on their culture and country so that I may build their vocabulary the same
way.
