Catholic Teaching Focus for this lesson

In Year Three, students learn that human beings can express the goodness created in them by God. They wonder
at God the creator who created our bodies. They wonder at our bodies that enable us to relate by naming and
identifying the way that we use our bodies to communicate with others. They express wonder at Gods reasoning
for giving us bodies and they celebrate the notion that God wants to communicate with them.

The focus of this lesson is for students to:
Wonder at how we experience our life as bodily beings
Wonder at God who created our bodies for a purpose
Explore how we can use our bodies to communicate and relate with those around us
Reflect on what our world would be like if God did not give us bodies to communicate with

Prior Knowledge

Students have an understanding of what the body is, they know the main body parts and how we might use our
body in everyday life e.g. walk to school, wash our hands, talk, run, jump

Students have exposure to bible stories and have participated in many class discussions involving God.

In previous years they have discussed being thankful to God for our bodies, life, and the many gifts which he has
given us.

Students know who Andrew Chin is they are familiar with his religious songs.

Catering for Learner Diversity

Extension students:
The teacher would provide these children with emotions that might be more challenging to demonstrate and
would give them words that are at their reading level.
If these children finish early or would like a second question, they can also respond to: I wonder what God
would think about how I communicate with others?

Students at risk:
The teacher would provide these children with simple emotions to convey to their partner and they would
only receive words which the teacher is confident they can read and understand.
If applicable, an education assistant could assist these children with coming up with ideas for their body
brainstorm and in reflecting upon the final I wonder question.

Non - Catholic students:
The response task towards the end of the lesson does not have to be completed from a Catholic perspective
for these children. They can respond to the question from their own individual spiritual perspective (bringing
in their own beliefs and values) or simply reflect on the question without bringing the idea of God into it.
Teachers need to be accepting and encouraging of all responses, even if they do not tie directly into showing
love for God. This encourages acceptance and positivity in the classroom environment.

Evidence of Learning for Assessment and Reporting

In this lesson, students will be assessed via:
Observations and anecdotal notes will be made regarding the students participation and responses during all
class discussions on the topic.
The body brainstorm they create in small groups the teacher will check to see who has contributed and the
ideas they develop.
The response they create in their religious education workbook.

Lesson Objectives

1. Students mime an emotion and identify what parts of their body they are using to show it
2. Students will name at least five different ways that people use their bodies to communicate with others
3. Students identify what the world might be like if God did not give us bodies to communicate with

LESSON DELIVERY

Timing Steps of the Lesson Resources

Introduction outline how you will introduce the learning point

6 mins 1. Students are seated on the classroom mat in a large circle.

2. The teacher hands out a small card to each child. Each of these cards EMOTION CARDS
have a different emotion written on them.

3. Students split into pairs and mime to one another how they would show
that emotion. Each person has one go at miming and guessing. While
students are completing the short task, the teacher chooses four
different students to present to the class afterwards.

4. The class sits back down in a circle and the students selected by the
teacher mime their emotions to the class. The teacher asks the
students:
I wonder what emotion Student Name is showing?
Why do you think that?
What was Student Name doing with his/her body to show that
emotion?

5. Tell students that through our bodies we are able to experience a
variety of emotions and communicate many different feelings to others.
Ask them:
I wonder what my body is like when I am sad?
I wonder what my body is like when I am excited?
I wonder what my body is like when I am sorry?
I wonder what my body is like when I am scared?

18 20 6. Discuss with students that our bodies allow us to express ourselves in
mins lots of different ways. That they dont only help us to show our
emotions, but they help us to communicate and relate with others
around us. Tell them that not everyone communicates the same, that
God has gifted us all with our own special ways of relating to one
another. Ask them:
I wonder what way I like to communicate best?
I wonder how I like to show thanks to someone?
I wonder how I like to show my parents/family that I love them?
I wonder how I can show my friends that I like them?

7. As students are responding to the I wonder questions, write their WHITEBOARD &
responses on the whiteboard as a brainstorm. MARKERS

8. Divide the class into groups of four/five (depending on the class size). LARGE PIECES OF
Have the children trace one group members body onto a large piece of TRACING PAPER /
paper. Students are to write and draw all around the body showing how PENCILS /
each body part might be used to communicate and relate with others. COLOURED
MARKERS

9. The class comes back to the mat and each group present/share their MAGNETS
ideas. The teacher sticks each body brainstorm up along the
whiteboard.

10. Looking at the ideas that the students have come up with, tell the
children that we are very lucky that God has given us bodies. Without
them we could not relate with others, tell other people what we think
or feel, show our emotions, show people that we love them, or make
people happy. Tell them that our bodies are very important to us.

11. Students go sit down at their desks and open to a blank page in their RELIGION
religion workbook. They are to reflect upon and either write or draw a WORKBOOKS
response to the question:
I wonder what the world would be like if God didnt give us bodies
to communicate with?

Conclusion outline how you will conclude the lesson emphasise the learning point

6 mins 12. Bring the children back down to the mat and talk about what they have
discovered today.
What have we learnt about our bodies today?
I wonder why God wanted us to be able to communicate and relate
with others?

13. Finish off the lesson by reading through These Hands by Andrew Chin. THESE HANDS
