History of Hawaii
Hawaii is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States of
America, having received statehood on August 21, 1959. Hawaii is the only U.S.
state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands. It is the
northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the
central Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located outside North
America.
Hawaii is one of four U.S. statesapart from the original thirteen, along with
the Vermont Republic (1791), the Republic of Texas (1845), and the California
Republic (1846)that were independent nations prior to statehood. Along with
Texas, Hawaii had formal, international diplomatic recognition as a nation.
The Kingdom of Hawaii was sovereign from 1810 until 1893 when the monarchy
was overthrown by resident American and European capitalists and landholders.
Hawaii was an independent republic from 1894 until August 12, 1898, when it
officially became a territory of the United States. Hawaii was admitted as a U.S.
state on August 21, 1959.
Languages
English (General American) and Hawaiian are listed as Hawaii's "official
languages" in the state's 1978 constitution. Article XV, Section 4 specifies that
"Hawaiian shall be required for public acts and transactions only as provided by
law". Hawaii Creole English, locally referred to as "Pidgin", is the native
language of many native residents and is a second language for many others.
Religion
The Makiki Christian Church in Honolulu heavily draws upon Japanese
architecture.
Christianity is the most widespread religion in Hawaii. It is mainly represented by
various Protestants, Catholics and Mormons. Buddhism is the second most
popular religion, especially among the archipelago's Japanese community.
Unaffilliated account for one-quarter of the population.
Sports
In Hawaii There are no professional teams from the major U.S. sports professional
leagues: MLB, NHL, NFL, MLS, NBA, etc.
But if they have university teams that participate in the different competitions of
the different sports of the NCAA. The university best known for its sports teams
is: the University of Hawaii.
The most celebrated sport in Hawaii is surfing. Different surf competitions are
carried out in Hawaii throughout the year. The most outstanding place for surfing
in Hawaii is Oahu.
