National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam
(NLUJAA) was established by the National Law University
and Judicial Academy, Assam Act, 2009 (Act No. XXV of
2009 as the fourteenth National Law University
established in the country and is located in Guwahati the
capital city of Assam, Hon'ble, the Chief Justice of Gauhati
High Court is the Chancellor of the University. The
objectives of the National Law University and Judicial
‘Academy, Assam are to impart comprehensive legal
‘education and training at all levels to achieve excellence in
legal education; to promote research in all branches of
law; to disseminate legal knowledge by organising
lectures, seminars, symposia, workshops and
conferences on contemporary issues of law to promote
legal awareness in the communities to achieve social and
economic justice and to promote cultural, legal and ethical
values with a view to promote and foster the rule of law and
the objectives enshrined in the Constitution of India; and to
liaise with institutions of higher learning and research in
India and abroad.

courses through distance mode and online being offered
by various Centres established in the University for

with arich green landscape where the students shall be in
close proximity to nature, To inculcate the environment
friendly values and to make them socially responsible, the
University shall play a key role in the development and
implementation of sustainable green practices.
The University has affiliation with the UGC under Section
2{f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, the
Bar Council of India (BC!) and the Association of Indian
Universities (AIU). The University has initiated the process
of its accreditation by the National Assessment and
Accreditation Coune!l(NAAC)
THE INFRASTRUCTURE
National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam has
state-of-the art infrastructure in its campus. The Centrally
air conditioned Academic Block is built with the state-of-
the-art facilities with customised class rooms with smart
board, LCD screen, projector, spacious seating
arrangements, etc. The Moot Court Hall reflecting all the
requirements of a regular bench of a High Court with
spacious seating arrangement for 150 students is
commissioned. There is a Conference Hall with seating

arrangement for 150 students to conduct national and
Intemational conferences, seminars and workshops with
excellent world lass facilities, In addition, enough number
‘of meeting rooms, discussion lounges, faculty rooms,
various Academic Centres are housed with all modem
‘amenities in the Academic Block.
Adjacent to the Academic Block is Administrative Block
with modem facilities housing VC's Office, Offices of
Registrar, Finance Officer, Deputy Registrar, Assistant
Registrars, Academic, Administrative, Examination,
Finance, Development, Engineering Sections and all
other support services. There is a Meeting Hall with
excellent IT arrangements adjacent VC's office for
conducting meeting of Academic Councl,
Council, General Council and other bodies. There is a
Conference Hall accommodating 150 persons to conduct
various enablement programmes for the officers and
officials.
Executive
On the top floor of the building the Library is housed as a
temporary measure and will be shifted to an independent
customised building under construction soon after its

‘Academy, Assam Library is a gateway to quality education
‘and research in the field of law, social sciences and
humanities. The University rary has a collection of more
than twelve thousand titles in the field of law, social
sciences and humanities. Over the years, the library has
procured various Law Journals, both print and electronic.
Online databases such as Lexis Nexis, Manupatra,
JSTOR, Westlaw India, SCC Online, HEIN Online,
DELNET, Cambridge Book Online, and ELGAR have also
been made available to facilitate access to quality material
for doing study and research by students, research
‘scholars and faculty members and visiting scholars. The
University provides Remote Access faciliy to the students
and faculty members while they are away from campus.
With the use of VPN connectivity the e-resources and
databases can be browsed via internet irrespective of the
physicallocation.

basic medical faciities.To tackle any kind of medical
‘emergency the University owns an ambulance which is

National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam has
a strong contingent of 21 well-experienced, committed
‘and qualified full time permanent faculty with a blend of
senior and young teachers. To provide specialised
leaming, eminent experts/scholars in different areas are
invited to deliver guest lectures on cutting edge
knowledge in various domains of legal profession. The
Visiting and guest faculty, inter alia, Includes both servingas well as the retired judges of the Supreme Cour of India
and the Gauhati High Court, other High Courts, practicing
lawyers from the Supreme Court, High Courts and Trial
courts, distinguished academicians and alumni of reputed
National Law Universities across the nation.

Rehabilitation of Children under the Juvenile Justice
(Care and Protection of Children)Act, 2000"; "National
Conference on Protection of Child Rights in Tea
Plantations of India, with a particular reference to the
implementation of The Plantation Labour Act, 1951” in
collaboration with Department of Labour and
Employment, Government of Assam supported by
UNICEF and Ethical Tea Partnership.The Centre for
Environmental Law, Advocacy & Research (CELAR) had
organised a Symposium on “Evolving a Strategic
International and National Climate Change.”
National Law University, Assam signed a MoU with
National Law School of India University (NLSIU),
Bengaluru on October 16, 2015 which fosters a
partnership between the two institutions of excellence for
‘academic collaboration. The University also signed a MoU
with UNICEF Office for Assam on June 24, 2015 towards
conducting programmes for different stakeholders on
Protection of Child Rights’
The National Law University and Judicial Academy,
‘Assam has a Legal Aid Cell inits premises. The Cell had
organised various legal awareness programmes on
various social legal issues like gender justice, cyber
stalking, Tights of
prisoner, juvenile justice, child labour, child rights, rights of
manual scavengers, etc. The Cell organised legal aid
awareness programmes thorough various mediums such
as street play, pamphlet distributions, visits to jal,
children’s homes, old age homes and educational
institutions. During such visits the University students,
para-legal volunteers along with the Legal Ald Coll
teachers actively participate in providing legal discourse
and clarify doubts on contemporary legal issues and
challenges. The Cell also organises court visits at the
Gauhati High Court and Lower Courts in the city with the
objective of educating and exposing students and
paralegal volunteers to the legal technicalities of the

‘The University has been instrumental in facilitating
engagements with various sections of society for
deliberations over a variety of socic-legal issues through
publication of its flagship journals, viz., ‘NLUA Law and
Policy Review’; ‘NLUA Law Review; “Journal of Enviro-
Legal Research and Advocacy’. Italso has to its eredit the
publication of @ fortnightly newsletter, Lex Terra; a
quarterly newsletter, ‘The Green Advocate’. The
University is planning to publish journals on Intellectual
Property Rights, Environmental Law and some other
select areas during the course of academic year.
STUDENT BAR COUNCIL
To look after the overall wellbeing of the students and to
‘encourage their participation in general administration of
the University, the Students Bar Council is constituted
‘every academic year by conducting election to promote
the democratic set up for decision making process in the
University:The Student Bar Council, in addition to the
Office-Bearers, consists of elected members from the
students of B.A.,LL.B, (Hons.) programme to the following
Committees: Academic Committee; Cultural Committee;
Hostel and Campus Welfare Committee; Literary and
Debating Committee; Mess and Hospitality Committee;
Moot Court Committee; Sports Committee;and Student

offers One-Year Post Graduation Degree Programme
(LLM))-The eligible candidates are admitted to the course
and thereafter students are required to choose their
specializations, viz., Corporate and Commercial
Laws;Intellectual Property Laws;
LawEnvironmental Law; Constitutional Law; Personal
Laws; and Human Rights. The university reserves the
right to offer the specialisations subject to the exigencies
of faculty in any given academic year, The University may
expand the number of specializations if merited by the
faculty expertise.
International
Eligibility for Admission
The admission shall exclusively be based on the
performance of the candidate in the Common Law
‘Admission Test (CLAT) 2017. However, to qualify for the
admission, the candidate must have passed LL.B. Three-
Year / Five-Year Integrated Degree from any recognized
institution/university with §5%marks for General
candidates (50% marks for SC/ST candidates).
The candidates who have passed the qualifying degree
examination through supplementary/compartment and
repeat attempts are also eligible for appearing in the test
and taking admission provided that such candidates will
have to produce the proof of having passed the qualifying
‘examination with §6/ 50 percent marks, as the case may
be, on the date of their admission or within the time
allowed by the National Law University and Judicial
‘Academy, Assam. The candidates who are appearing or
have appeared in the qualifying degree examination and
are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the
CLAT-2017 subject othe condition that they shall produce
the proof of having passed the qualifying examination with
the prescribed percentage of marks at the time of their
interview / counselling

Course Curriculum
‘Students admitted to One Year LL.M. Degree Programme
have to complete three mandatory papers and six elective
papers and a dissertation in order to complete the
programme. Student who opts for minimum four out of six
electives ina particular specialisation will secure an LL.M.
in that specialisation whereas the student, who do not
make such an option and/or opt for papers from diverse
specialisations or from the general pool, will be awarded
LLM. (General). Each paper shall consist of 100 marks.
The Dissertation is of 200 marks. Three mandatory papers
and three Elective Papers are prescribed in the first
‘Semester. Three Elective Papers may be opted from the
specialisation or from the general stream as per the option
of the student from the pool of specialisations offered by
the University in an Academic year Elective Courses are
courses which a student chooses to study exercising the
options available and include both optional and seminar

papers. Optional papers are taught through contact
classes and are evaluated for 100 marks each on the
basis of an end semesteriend of course examination.
‘Seminar papers are transacted through contact classes
‘and are evaluated on the basis of research draftireport
and presentation. Seminar Papersare evaluated through
the submission of Research Paper and Presentation to a
‘group of faculty members. The division of marks for this
paper is 30 marks for Presentation and 70 marks for
Research Paper, Ifa teacher indicates any one paperfrom
‘among the pool of specialisation papers as mandatory to
bbe studied to obtain hat specialisation, such a paper must
be offered and completed within the stipulated period.
Note: The University reserves the right to amend the
Intake, fee structure, course curriculum and duration of
courses from time to time for both undergraduate and
postgraduate Degree Course.
